Reflections on a Year of Reading Italian Literature.
Books read:
-Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes
-Love & Gelato by Jenna Welch Evans
-One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle
Based on the fact that Frances Mayes and her husband moved to Italy in “Under the Tuscan Sun” and bought a house in Cortona, I learned that there is a lot of empty land and valleys. Throughout this novel while reading it they elaborated about the amount of land they were going to purchase. Frances and her husband Ed impulsively purchased the villa and had a lot of overwhelming tasks of renovating it. I also want to elaborate not only on the valleys of Italy but also Frances throughout the novel discovering the art, architecture and the local Tuscan cuisines, she felt that she had found a place where she truly enjoyed and a place she felt belonged in.
Based on the fact that Frances Mayes visited a few places in Italy, I learned the historical background about where Ed, her husband, had purchased their home which was in Cortona. While they were trying to figure out if they wanted to purchase the house, the italian realtor was telling them history on the villa and what came about it, the relator said that was hill top and that the city had a rich history and that it was very old fashioned and not “Modern”. In the text Ed and Frances went back to san francisco where they are originally from to do something but when coming back they noticed that they had a problem with the wells filled with water which just shows the history behind how old the villa they purchased is.
Based on the fact that “Under the Tuscan Sun” is based in Italy and Frances Mayes explores the countries art, archiculture, traditions and religions happened while living there .I learned that Food and is a big tradition and a central theme in this novel,in the beginning of the novel Frances wanted to make a traditional tuscan meal for Ed she went to the closest market, shop or farmers stand to get her fresh and local known ingredients she needed. She found it very easy to find ingredients but noticed that Italians don't use much to make their traditional pasta, just some home made tomato sauce and a tidbit more of other ingredients named in the novel like olive oil, vegetables etc.
From reading “Under The Tuscan Sun”, I learned that, In life you should Pause, reflect, and choose wisely. In the novel they impulsively bought the house in Cortona and didn't expect all of the complications that were going to come with living there and having to fix up.
From reading the book “Love & Gelato” by Jenna Evans Welch, I learned that in life, you just need to trust the process and wait for the best to come because in this story Lina the main character has her ups and downs in the beginning and didn't want change in her life, but by the end she showed herself that it was actually good for her.
From reading “One Italian Summer” By Rebecca Serle I learned that, in life I should cherish the small things because she lost her mother in this book and I would hate to see my mom pass and not say to myself that I regretted anything.
What I have learned about myself throughout this past year with completing all of my reading is that it takes a lot of patience and time to be able to read every night. Although it was annoying and not something I wished I had to do I could say that it has prepared me for the better and future. It prepared me for the work I am going to have to deal with in college and also it helped me get into a groove I wasn't normally used to.

Week 18 Blog
This week I read pages 30-70 of “One Italian Summer” by Rebecca Serle.
The most important sentence I read this week can be found on page 44, “The italian countryside is just like you imagined it'' Here is why: As I explained in my last recent blog Katy had gone through a rough time trying to figure out her emotions with her mothers passing and her husband problems wanting a divorce etc. This sentence is a reflection when Katy is speaking about Italy, a place where her mother and her wanted to go for the longest time. Since her mother got sick, they weren't able to make the dream come to life. Katy was determined to make the dream come true for her mother, in her mothers memory, she won't let the dream dir, so she booked a ticket to italy without her husband, This caused a lot of controversy between her husband and her relationship but she didn't feel like inviting him and wanted to be alone to honor her mother. This specific sentence comes straight from her husband's mouth when speaking about how Italy is gonna turn out for Katy. As the days pass Katy is ready for Italy and but the end of the 3rd chapter she was on the plane and booked the hotel for the place she has been wanting to go for her whole life.
Reading this book has made me imagine the author's words written in the book. I see and think about how the scenario in the book would happen in real life and makes me think about real life. This book is definitely my type of book, it gets straight to the point and does not tippy toe around the plot and that's what interests me when I read a book, I like when it grabs my attention from the beginning.

Week 17 Blog.
This week I read pages 1-30 of “One Italian Summer” by Rebecca Serle.
The most important sentence I read this week can be found on page 9, “Katy, you’re grieving,” he said to me last night. “You’re in crisis; you can’t decide this now. People don’t get divorced in the middle of a war.” Here is why: Starting this new book it talked about an important death to someone's life, in this case it was Katy. Katy lost her mother and was grieving because it was her best friend and the person she would talk to everyday. Katy is married and since her mothers death she has been thinking about her marriage a little harder than usual and considering a divorce. Her husband refuses to get one and thinks that Katy is just feeling like this because of the grief and how hard it is hitting her. Katy throughout the book has been talking about all the things her mother would do and keeps thinking about her in every situation she gets.
Starting this new book this week after concluding with “Love & Gelato” has been a similar switch, both of the main characters of the story’s mother’s past and both are in Italy or are flying to Italy both for her mother's memories. The book “One Italian Summer” I feel like I will like because of its plot I can already predict the outcome and possibilities that will occur and being able to read along and see if i'm right is interesting and exciting, the enjoyable part of this story already is that it gets to the point instead of the slow drag just to get to the boring plot at the end. With this story I feel as though that It wont be the case and it will stay consistent throughout the text and the author will show a lot of engagement for the reader not to get “bored” of the text.
