90's Market Research

This is how the music industry did market research during the 90's - 00's. With postage-paid postcards. How many do you think they got back? I bought hundreds of CDs during this time - I never sent one in. Wanna know why? I wasn't given a reason to care. No WIFM. Throw me a bone - send me a coupon or something. Nope. Nothing. I really care about music (and did so then). As one of their most rabid customers, if I didn't send it in, who did?

Which operations? Modernize how? By getting colored purple? Is there a sun involved? A clock? Who is Pega? Half a horse?

Oh, by the way, I'm not intrigued enough to click to learn any of the answers to these questions.

My absolute favorite request from a salesperson starts with "Can you help me put something together? See below!"

Oh, yeah, let me read the 5 pages of conversation that you had with your customer since January and somehow fully understand what your customer is needing.

You've got to feel bad for the social media specialist who manages this account. How many people follow this - 5? No one wants to be reminded about how much they hate doing laundry while they're on Facebook, do they?

I haven't seen this trick before. A nice, clearly laid out webpage with a nice large box to unsubscribe. And an Unsubscribe button that doesn't work.

Very clever April Fools email - sent as an order confirmation. Mills and Gen Z won't get it.

If your brand allows for it, have fun with your marketing. This wasn't hard to execute - hell, they already had the template.

Dental Marketing 101 - you are not “accepting” new patients, you are “welcoming” new patients. See the difference? Accepting leads me to believe there’s an approval process, like a university or country club. As a new patient, I want to feel as though you’re happy I’m going to call.

But maybe I won’t call; see, I’m not sure I want to use a dentist that has to use a BOGO on implants...

When you tell me that I can save off a $5,000 job or more, that tells me MY job is going to be more. A lot more. And $500 ain’t gonna seem like any kind of savings.

We are all in marketing, even if we are just marketing ourselves. And some of us are out to attract a specific type of customer. Find a niche and fill it.

Anybody else play games with ads in them on their phone? The ads are usually for other games, right? Not for a shopping mall that’s for sale... “Oh, yeah, I’ve been meaning to pick one of these up...”

1) who sold the owners of this property that online static ads were the right medium?

2) I’m willing to bet that property isn’t going to be 93% leased when the pandemic gets through with retail.
