THE D-DAY VICTORIA CROSS Today is the anniversary of Operation Overlord, more commonly known as D-Day. 76 years ago, Stan Hollis was Company Sergeant Major of one of the first battalions to reach Gold Beach on D-Day. He was no stranger to combat. By 1944, he'd fought at Dunkirk, El Alamein and the Battle for Primasole Bridge. Hollis was thirty-one years old on D-Day. He was in charge of three machine gun and three mortar teams. He was one of the most experienced men in his unit, and many younger soldiers looked up to him. It was at a house that overlooked the beach where Hollis performed the first of two heroic acts to win him the Victoria Cross. When the lead platoons passed the house, they came under fire from a machine gun hidden in a pillbox. In response, Hollis charged around thirty yards over open ground whilst under fire to attack the pill box. He took the surviving occupants prisoner and discovered a slit trench leading away to a second pillbox in the garden of the house. Very difficult Missions overcome by the Airborne Boys. Jumping, landing their gliders close to objectives, they where surrounded, but fought their way out at great cost, but overcame the odds. The Greatest Respect to them all. The Antarctic Mission...We had planned a number of Missions, whilst on detachment on The Falkland Isles. I was very lucky as a number of them where approved, we got to intercept HMS Somerset and airdrop to them. The best that I carried out, was The Maritime Reconnaissance on the South Side Of South Georgia, a sight to be seen. After an Air Drop at Grytviken we climbed over the Mountain and descended into 250 feet Low Level and flew up the South Side Of The Island. I was very lucky whilst in Air Cadets to have won a Flying Scholarship. I undertook, Flying Training at Compton Abbas Airfield in Dorset. It was the amazing 6 weeks of my life. I undertook Flying Training there and finished there with my Private Pilots Licence. I also received my first set of wings from the Station Commander at RAF Chivenor. Also I’m here with some of the boys. Out of this group we had 3 RAF Pilots.
