Bandcamp
1. Bandcamp pays musicians 85% of what you spend. On Bandcamp Friday, it pays 100%.
Yes, that’s correct. Bandcamp typically takes a 15% commission on digital sales, allowing artists to receive 85% of the revenue. On Bandcamp Fridays, which started in March 2020, Bandcamp waives its revenue share, so artists receive 100% of the sales.
2. You can download as many times as needed and stream the songs in your collection forever.
Yes, once you’ve purchased music on Bandcamp, you can stream it indefinitely from your collection and download it multiple times in various formats.
3. The major DJ stores only pay 60%.
This varies by platform. For example, iTunes takes a 30% commission on sales, meaning artists receive 70%. Specific figures for other DJ platforms aren’t provided in the available sources, so the 60% figure may not apply universally.
4. Major streaming doesn’t pay underground musicians at all.
Major streaming services do pay artists, but the amounts are often minimal. For instance, Spotify pays between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, which can be challenging for underground or independent musicians to earn substantial revenue without a large number of streams.
5. Bandcamp has paid independent musicians $1.45 billion.
As of the latest available data, fans have paid artists and their labels $1.46 billion using Bandcamp.
In summary, Bandcamp offers a more artist-friendly revenue model compared to many other platforms, especially during Bandcamp Fridays. It also provides flexible streaming and downloading options for fans. However, revenue shares on other platforms vary, and while major streaming services do compensate artists, the per-stream payments are typically low.

Prior to the 20th century, and the emergent dominance of equal temperament, the association of emotions with particular musical keys was common practice.
The Black Glass Ensemble recently revisited this historical alignment of sound and emotion to offer a brief ‘embrace’ in B Minor - the key associated with patience.
The initial embrace, featuring the 8 musicians of the Black Glass Ensemble and guest Colin Potter, with whom they had been due to perform prior to the Covid19 lockdown, was well received. Consequently, Black Glass sought to widen the reach of their embrace to other musicians to make a more comprehensive piece of work.
The response was unprecedented. 104 musicians returned 247 individual musical tracks to be mixed into this present arrangement.
The full 38’ 50” minute work, “Be Mine in Patience: an Embrace in B minor” is made freely available in the hope that this extended embrace may help in some small way to nurture strength, fortitude and comfort.
