I often read headcanons about South Italy's name, mainly people preferring to call him Romano or an entirely different name since Lovino it's not a common Italian name, so I wanted to write down my personal headcanon.
I think Lovino is a nickname that Spain gave him when he was little and it stuck.
B and V are essentially pronounced the same in Spanish, and the Spanish word for wolf is "lobo": think of Antonio affectionately calling him little wolf "lobito, lobi, lobinito" in honour of his heritage —being the grandson of Rome— and reinforced by S. Italy behaving like a little wild animal most of the time.
I also headcanon the colour of Lovino's eyes being more amber/golden toned than hazel, giving his gaze a wolf-like quality.
#Not delving right now into Antonio's obsession with gold and Lovino's eyes for my sanity#Dusting off old headcanons#Sorry the brainrot is strong#aph romano#Aph s.italy#Not art not sketches

I found some cute Hetaween sketches in a sketchbook from 2016! I still really like them so I’ve tried a redraw. Nyospain is supposed to be a demonic inquisitor while Spain is an undead conquistador. Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃 👻

I hope you don't mind that I've tried my hand at it too, but I couldn't resist the siren song that was this prompt 😫These two are just too cute! (plus, a little bonus under the cut)

Would someone enjoy drawing nyo!Spain wearing a coazzone or treccia alla catalana/spagnola (Catalan braid)? A fic, maybe? XD
It was a common hairstyle worn in Spain in the second half of the Middle Ages (similar to the one existing in Bizantium btw) and was popularized in Italy by the late 15th century, it's commonly depicted in the later decades of the Italian Renaissance, you all must have seen it.
I can imagine Romano absentmindedly playing with Spain's "braid" (it's not a braid, really), or at times even trying to aid decorate it with pearls and ribbons, and so it eventually became popular in Italy too.

About Lovino also having quite a huge crush on fem!Spain, and because in Hetalia it is portrayed as if Spain taught Lovino to dance the tarantella, I can't help but think about the two of them every time I listen to Pizzica di San Vito. And tbh, I always imagine portraits of them throughout the ages, particularly from the late 18th and 19th century, like Goya's El Parasol, or Baile de San Antonio or The Stolen Kiss by Jean-Honire Fragonard. Which doesn't make much sense, since it is precisely in the second half of the 18th cent that the two of them became more distant. They're just romantic and bucolic, kinda, y guess 😅. Anyway, I love that headcanon, they really could be a very sweet couple.
Omggg yess please I can totally see them dancing the pizzica together! Also the flamenco — I think Lovino has a beautiful singing voice and could take the role of the cantaor too, if taught the song. I love all these paintings! Especially the Parasol although I think Lovino would balk at holding the umbrella for her the entire time 🤣 Speaking of their portraits through the ages I can't get out of my mind Caravaggio's Giovanni Battista (the Kansas one), it looks so much like a young Lovino to me, that scowl! Same goes for Spain in Picasso's Mujer con Mantilla or Saliendo del baño by Sorolla. I know that realistically they would be distant at that time, but I can't get out of my mind Spain going at every Nation's meeting, every ball looking for him, to catch up and maybe have a dance like the old times🥺
