Insect plushies - the difference in style
Through Pinterest, there are lots of different examples of insect plushies. Some are realistic and some are more stylised.

price differences + marketing
Jellycat
Labubu
Tumblr media
Labubu is a really popular type of plushie right now from the company Pop Mart. However there is some controversy on social media about the price and worth of them. They are quite expensive, the full size Labubus are $60 minimum, and some going for $100+ on the site. However, they are a ‘high end brand’, as they are a collaboration with a high end designer named Pronounce. Ones that are even higher prices are in collaboration with popular companies.
Labubu have been around for a while, since 2015. However they have been very popular recently, especially in Thailand. And it was believed to have been sparked by Lalisa Manobal, or Lisa, from the globally popular girlgroup BLACKPINK. Lisa is from Thailand, making Thai fans rush to buy one, immediately rising resale prices.
In my opinion, I think they’re very cute. I do agree with the price point since they come from a higher end company and a high end designer, and I don’t think some people know that, causing a lot of discourse about their price point. I wouldn’t consider buying one though just because that’s not my price range, but if I were rich I would buy one.

Polymer clay sculpts
youtube
This dog model is very sweet. It’s very stylised which I like, it wouldn’t have been as cute if the dog was realistic. I like this artist’s style, the model isn’t artcitularly detailed and reminds me of low poly 3D models which is a really nice look for this model. The less detailed style is more reminiscent of a futuristic aesthetic. The process is also pretty straightforward for sculpey models, but in the end it looks more like polymer clay? I love the look of this model.
This style of model isn’t one I’d go for if I were to make one. The character I’d make one of is very very different to this one, so using a different style of sculpt wild be much better. I would do something more like a statue that has a lot of detail. But I can imagine this model probably didn’t take as long to make as some other more intricate models, as the details were cut from excess pieces of clay that are pretty big so the fur is more cartoonish. Although there was more detail put into the helmet, which I think was a good choice, because it keeps the focus on the head instead of adding a lot of detail to the fur as well, it puts more attention on the helmet and the face.
youtube
This one is quite cool, he’s just a really cool design. Similar to the one before they’re pretty cartoony and I like it! I really like this style, but it’s not a style I would consider for my project.

Snail model
youtube
I really like this one! I think this is really awesome. I like the texture of this one. I also like the decision to use a shiny glaze so that it makes the model look like an actual slimy snail.
Because the model is quite large, it allows for a lot more visible detail. I think the paint job really adds to this and it’s done well.
I also like the skull as the shell. It almost doesn’t even look like a shell though, which makes it look more like a slug with the skull on its back instead of a snail. the detail of the skull being broken and the helmet being visibly worn makes it as if the snail has been carrying the skull of an astronaut on its back as it travels, using it as a new shell. I just think this one is nice.
This one is done by the same person who made the dog model, and it’s cool to see how different the artist’s style can be depending on the project. I think that’s a really good skill to have.

Robot goldfish model
youtube
I really like this model and design. The character design itself is really nice, I like the bright colour palette a lot. I also like how the design looks like a mix between mechanical and real scales, The back scales look like actual fish scales but the rest of the body looks all mechanical which looks awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's something similar steampunk but the palette and robotic parts look futuristic. It reminds me of Frutiger Aero and the Web 2.0 style which is an aesthetic I personally like a lot.
I need ro acrually watch the video wouldnt tha be awesomeeee yeahhh it would bebbut im not goign to lolol ill do it one dy not today this is a reminder tht I swear I ll look aat but definitelt wont ever everervvvrreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Comic page references
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To create a difference between my projects, I wanted to create some comic style panels of scenes from the storyline. This shows what I'm able to do and how I can work in different styles. I can’t remember the name of this comic but it really inspired me, I like this inking style.
Tumblr media
I really like this panel in particular. I just love the pose and the lighting. It’s just so awesome how the lighting shifts, the man on the left has shadows casting on her face because he’s facing the light, and the man on the left in in the dark but has light casting on his face. I don’t know where this panel is from, but I think this would be a good panel to show a good character who is trying to fight against a bad guy that puts on a front. I also like the texture of the light from dark that comes from the wash of ink.
Tumblr media
I really liked the pose, so I tried to draw my character in the same pose. But the background didn’t really work since I used graphite instead of ink, so you can see the streaks and the blend from light to dark isn’t smooth. But I really like how I shaded his face and I think it looks good. I might digitalise this if I get the chance.
Tumblr media
I didnt finish it at the time, because I lost it. I lost the paper it was on.
Tumblr media
To start, I drew the box for the panel. At this point I really wished I had actual comic paper because this took such a long time to get completely straight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like how the sketch looked, and I was quite nervous on how it would look when it was done. The pencil crosshatching is less precise, so the inked one that actually is precise might make it look worse. But it didn’t end up looking too bad when I erased the lines.
Tumblr media
I decided to try and make a comic panel in a similar style of a scene that would happen if it were an actual comic. I wanted to use inks. I mainly used 0.05 and a brush to keep the details. The 0.05 was really helpful to keep the crosshatching I did.
I could never be a comic artist, I wouldn’t have the patience to ink hundreds of panels like this and have it look the same every time. I would like to create a page like this though, I think it would look cool all together to have some cool scenes. I think I might just have the patience for one page.

Kailyn Carr
Tumblr media
Kailyn Carr is a doll maker. She specialises in creating ball jointed dolls, which are dolls that have posable limbs held together by balls for joints.
Tumblr media
I have followed her on Instagram for a while and I really like her work. It's very cute and charming and recognisable as hers.
Tumblr media
This robot design is my favourite, I think she’s really cute. I love the concept of the different faces made from paper. She was the first model I saw by Carr. I really love her style. I think the way she colours her models is very unique and I always recognise her models when she makes new ones. The models are made from 3D print, because she creates ‘garage kits’ for sale. Garage kits are kits where pieces of a model come not put together, and the buyer can paint them and put the model together themselves.
Tumblr media
But other than robot ball jointed dolls, she also makes models. I think this one is adorable. I really like the way she creates eyes, they make them look so much cuter.

This is a video of her painting them,

GODZILLA
Tumblr media
I have only watched Godzilla Minus One, but I really enjoyed it. It is one of the better rated Godzilla movies which I can understand why. I cant compare it to any of the others, but I enjoyed how much this one went into the characters and the main character's life. They made good use of the time period, right after WW2, to create an interesting main character. The main character was part of the Army, and was tasked as a Kamikaze pilot. However, instead of carrying out his duty, he faked a fault in his plane so he didn't have to take the job. He was regarded as a coward for what he did. While he was getting his plane examined for the fault, Godzilla emerged from the water and killed everyone on the island except for him. The movie was really emotional for me and I enjoyed that aspect a lot and I like how they used the emotions of the main character, as he lives with his guilt.
Tumblr media
Godzilla has been around since 1954, and has appeared in 33 different movies since then. It has also been featured in video games, novels, comics and TV shows, making it a pop culture icon. It is regarded as the 'King of Monsters', being one of the most highly recognised Kaiju characters of all time.
Tumblr media
It appears as a colossal prehistoric dinosaur or reptile, and is considered aquatic as he lives in the ocean. It stands at well over 300 feet tall, being depicted somewhere between 300-400 feet tall in most adaptations. It completely towers over the city of Tokyo in Japan.
Godzilla's nature has been different depending on the movie. However it is mostly depicted as a threat, who's intent is to destroy anything it sees. In the movie I watched, it attempted to destroy everything it laid it eyes on from boats to entire cities. It is usually always very violent, using its incredibly strong abilities to its advantage. Its abilities have been listed as atomic pulse, magnetism, precognition, fireballs, convert electromagnetic energy into intensive body heat, converting shed blood into temporary tentacle limbs, an electric bite, superhuman speed, laser beams emitted from its eyes and even flight.
Tumblr media
He is also in Fortnite. Fortnite is a battle royale game. Players could compete to play as him, and eliminate players before being taken out by the other players. He isn't in the game anymore but he is featured as a permanent skin.

Pokemon drawings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used a random Pokemon generator to generate a random Pokemon and drew the ones I got. I really like how the Samurott came out, I love the colours I used. I like the colouring techniques I used here, even if it's quite messy I still love how it came out. I used to struggle with drawing Pokemon so this exercise was good for me to adapt to stylising them instead of just drawing them exactly like the reference. It was also good for me to get used to drawing more exaggerated shapes.

Maya UFO
Unfortunately all of my process shots were deleted. I deleted them by accident. These are the final outcomes of it. I didn't save the Tumblr post after writing it the first time, closed the tabs, and deleted all of the screenshots because I thought they were already uploaded.
Tumblr media
I really hate using Maya. The processes are so tedious and unnecessary. The interface is also really overwhelming and I hate how many useless buttons there are. I think the software is so horrid and I really don't want to use it again. I also don't really like working with 3D digitally, Im not really comfortable with most of the programs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that my outcome turned out alright. I think I could have picked a better colour palette but I wanted to look sort of vaporwave inspired with the more neon palette.
Tumblr media
I dont really like how the windows of the UFO dont actually look like windows and how they aren't flush to the edges of the body, but I didn't have a way of doing it. But I like everything else about it. But it took forever to finish, which makes me not want to use it even more, because I dont want to create a whole project on Maya and have it take so long.

Maya rabbit
I think this one is cute. It’s really simple but still cute. This one is easy to follow and the design is simple enough for a beginner like me.

I HATE using Maya. I wont end up using these tutorials at all but it’s interesting to see how other artists go about using Maya to create spaceships. I still find them too complicated though and I probably wouldn’t follow these ones anyway. In my first year, I made a Pokeball using a tutorial and I still couldn’t figure it out even with the instructions right in front of me.
