the nice thing, on the flip side, is when the kid does get to help and i hand them bags and say "good job!" they get SO excited to keep helping! 99% of the time they immediately get a burst of energy and are clamoring to grab another bag! i'm a total stranger & not even giving them any reward other than telling them they did a good job and they're desperate for it!!!

one thing that actually genuinely sucks about my job is seeing parents who don't let their kids do fucking anything and who treat them like theyre obviously just going to fuck up. ill see kids who want to help put away the groceries or whatever and i'll try to hand them bags so they can help and the parent will snatch the bag from my hand at best or actually say sthn about the kid's gonna fuck it up at worst and u can see the light immediately dim in that kid's eyes
