Game idea 3:
My third and final game idea would be a first person shooter, based more on console games such as Goldeneye. But a twisted version of this formula, in it- you play as the big 'Bond' style villain. Spies have been sent to your facility to assassinate you and you have to defend yourself against the attack. There would be waves of generic npcs attacking you with a boss battle at the end, with each wave getting progressively more difficult. You have access to a great variety of weapons, which you can acquire from each boss fight. These get more and more ludicrous, allowing you to pick up and shoot a shark with a laser. Maybe have a similar style of comedy to the Borderlands games? I would also implement a unique ability from the Max Payne game franchise, that allows the player to slow down time, and line up their shots. Something similar to the bullet time from The Matrix movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The player would control it with either a joy stick, or light gun peripheral, similar to classic arcade shooter games such as House of The Dead and Time Crisis 2. You'll need quick reaction times, and aim to take out each villain before they kill you.

Game Idea 2:
Arcade style racing game, with similar gamplay to Outrun 2 and Mario Kart Arcade. You would play as a biker gang, with each of the bikers working as a segment of health. There are 7 bikers in total (=7 hits the play can take), when a player collides with another vehicle, they lose one member. The goal is to make it to the end with all 7 members, and the best possible score time. The cars would be rival gangs trying to stop them reaching the next checkpoint.
Tumblr media
I would want the gameplay to feel similar to Outrun, where you are moving fast, whist simultaneously avoiding an abundance of vehicles. The game would also feature pixel art as a tribute to the games from this era.
youtube
I would like the game to be controlled by a bike styled peripheral like the one below, so that the player could lean left or right in order to steer the direction of the bokes- allowing them to feel more immersed.

Character & Setting
My game is essentially Geometry Dash where the protagonist is a solitary cube trying to make is way to the end of a course while avoiding an abundance of obstacles along the way.
The setting is essentially a dystopian city that is relatively alternate to ours where the sky is always red because of a blood moon which is eternally active.

Tumblr media
All three of these games use the same control scheme of a single button or key pressed, each game is essentially a side-scroller.
They are all endless-runners except for Geometry Dash which has a selection of replayable levels within which you race to the end avoiding obstacles placed in your path.

Respawn

youtube
I used the above video to give me a helping hand with the respawn feature within my game.
I first created a new blueprint for the respawn point and made it hidden in game, then I made a new event and got an "all actors of class" node and cast that to the BpSpawnPosition, and then from there to the ThirdPersonGameMode, then I had to come off of there with a "get gamemode" node, then cast from the gamemode to a "Respawn Player" node and then finally connect that to the SpawnPosition via a "get actor transform" node.

Classic High Score Arcade Games
Pac-Man:
Pac-man, transliterated as "puck-man" in the Japanese industry, is a 1980 maze action video game developed and published by Namco for arcade machines.
In the NA industry, the company Midway Manufacturing started developing the game as per agreement with Namco of America. In the game, the player controls the character (pac-man) where the objective is to "eat" all the dots inside of a maze while avoiding four differentiating colours.
Game development started in early 1979, headed by Toru Iwatani with an initial 9-man team. Iwatani wanted to create a single game that appealed to both genders; this was because most games were catered towards the themes of war and sports.
The Japanese title "Puck-man" roughly translated to "paku paku taberu", meaning "to gobble something up"; for the NA release, this was changed to "Pac-man".

Defender:
Defender, demonstrated in late 1980 and released in 1981, is a horizontally scrolling shooter arcade game developed by Williams Electronics.
The game's setting is dependent on version, where the player could be playing on either an unnamed planet or city; Being a shooter, the objective is to fend off waves of alien combatants while protecting a group of astronauts. Heading game development was Eugene Jarvis, a pinball programmer at Williams; Jarvis' first video game was Defender, and it drew inspiration from the titles Space Invaders and Asteroids.
It became available to the Japanese market via Taito. Defender is considered to be within the ranks of the "golden-age" of arcade games, selling over 55,000 individual units and becoming the company's best selling game and one of the highest grossing games ever.

Galaga
Galaga is a 1981 fixed shooter produced by Namco and released in North America by Midway Manufacturing. It is a game where the player pilots a starship which moves side-to-side on the bottom of the screen, the main purpose of the game is to fend off endless waves of enemies with the built in blasters of the ship, racking up a high-score while trying to survive the onslaught.
Some enemies can capture a player's ship via a tractor beam (which pulls them in holding them captive), which can be rescued to transform the player into a "dual fighter" which is two ships merged together to give the player additional firepower
This game's concept is relatively similar to that of Defender and Space Invaders.
"Although early location tests were unsuccessful, Galaga received critical acclaim and went on to become one of the most successful arcade games"-Wikipedia.

What is an arcade game? & its history
https://www.betson.com/the-history-of-arcade-games/
youtube
Both articles mention Pong which released in the '70s and that it essentially kickstarted the Arcade Gaming Industry and gave it a boost, there were a few games beforehand but they weren't as popular or successful. It was made to draw women into Arcade Gaming as well as men as its predecessors were shooters & sports games which didn't really appeal to women during that day and age, from there iconic arcade games such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong & Space Invaders were brought about for our entertainment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A decade later we were introduced to an all-new arcade gaming format: Fighters, Street Fighter is the game that gave this new genre a jumpstart in the Arcade Gaming Industry, fighters were fun to play because it had short and entertaining rounds of combat where you can fight your friends or against the AI. A few years later in 1992 we became acquainted with the very first Mortal Kombat which brought about a new era of fighting games where we were faced with a never before seen feature such as gore, with the addition of this brand new feature the Mortal Kombat franchise gradually became more violent with the executions and fatalities, the most iconic feature of the franchise is the "Finish Him" voiceover when you perform a fatality on your poor unfortunate opponent.
Arcade games started to become popular in the late 1970s but the 1980s were the main highlight of the Arcade genre.

Spikes kill player
I added a new blueprint for the spikes and then made the object into a cone stretched into a spike, then within the code I added a feature that would apply damage to the character when it come into contact with the spike, for this to work I had to set up a collision box, once that was set up I then added a destroy actor node which allows the character to be killed by the collision with the spikes, I also had to set up a health node and a death node within the character's coding so it would take the damage and die.

Background in game world
I imported my background image into Unreal Engine and made it a material, within the code I added a panning feature so it would give it a panoramic view which allowed it to spin and play it like a continuously moving background, then I just implemented it onto the back wall.

Background
I used the paintbrush, paint bucket and shape tools to create my unique background image.
I started by making her background red, then I added black rectangles in to make different sized building silhouettes and a dark road with the dotted white line via the shape tool within Photoshop, I then used the shape tool again but this time to create two circles, I used the paint bucket tool to make each circle a different shade of red and made the darker of the two overlap the lighter one to give a unique and cool effect of a blood moon.
