Post War Kaidan x Shepard. A moment on the streets of London.

A necessary update prompted by a chat with my dearest friend @esd-mix-up regarding 11th "dehumanized" by me:

Considering “humanity” in these two ways, 1) as being humane, benevolent, and compassionate, and 2) as being human; having a unique human trait in a multi-species world, what Shepard is is actually being very human. Arguably, humanity’s ability to survive, adapt and thrive, endure through destruction to reach salvation is what makes humans such an important species in Council space. Shepard’s own willingness to adapt to any circumstances, to accept the highest stakes for the sake of global survival is both uniquely human and, in the end, very humane. There is no higher show of care for others than sacrificing yourself in the process. The proper word to describe him would be “depersonalized”, as he does have issues with being not an instrument but a person.

TLDR him sacrificing what makes him human is the most human thing to do.

1. How would they define love if asked

For him, love (in the widest sense) is commitment. It is not a fleeting feeling, it is not lust or passion, it is not something that may pass; it is utmost devotion, it is sticking by the person/cause/idea you love, it is being bluntly sincere and steadily reliable.

11. One word they'd use to describe themselves, one you'd use to describe them and lastly a word that their closest/loved one would use to describe them

Shepard: "soldier". That's what he was and what he will remain to be, even when the war ends, and he doesn't know another way to be (man needs therapy).

Me: "dehumanized". Shepard is an experiment in severe dehumanization, having consciously sacrificed his humanity for the sake of global survival. It is a sad necessity, another dead body among the myriad. Instrumentalized and consumed by the cause, he is depersonalized, and rendered sacred through expendability.

Kaidan (as LI): "potential". Kaidan believed Shepard was the only man who could have united the Galaxy to fight off the Reapers, yet the price he paid was too much -- there must have been another way. Shepard may have given up on himself, but Kaidan has not and will not. However much wrong Shepard has committed, he still has potential for peaceful life.

13. Is there a moral line they would never cross

In short, there is no line he is not willing to cross for victory.

Shepard has always been pragmatic and willing to complete the mission at any cost, which was proven time and again since Torfan. The thing is, towards the end of war against the Reapers, he started viewing any interaction or action as a mission, and he became a “goals justify the means” kind of person. The war demands he sacrifices, and everyone else sacrifices, and Shepard is willing to make the toughest decisions -- for others, if need be. He will cross every moral line so that others wouldn’t have to.

It is a dangerous ground to stand on, privileged and delusional, even though he fully intends to carry the weight of his choices and accept the punishment, if any.

27. Are they content with their sexuality and gender expression? would a difference in their sexuality and gender affect their role in the story and if so how

Shepard is trans. He had a long journey of accepting himself, and put a lot of work into his expression and his body. It is no longer a painful topic for him, for he knows who he is and accepts the steps he had to take.

His ability to doggedly undertake any path transfers to gender, too, so a change in the way he views himself will not change the way he acts. He will express himself the way he feels he should, against any odds. (he will still bring rancid vibes)

ME1 is fucking hilarious

After multiple firefights (on the fucking citadel? The place that’s supposed to represent galactic peace & cooperation???) within the span of a few hours, Shepard returns to her CO with a krogan, turian & quarian and it literally goes like this

Shepard: Heyyy Anderson so this is Wrex— he murdered Fist. Solid guy. Figured it couldn’t hurt to have a shock trooper on the crew. This is Garrus, a detective who just quit his job to chase a fellow turian across the galaxy. He’s a good shot— don’t ask me how I know. And of course, this is Tali, she’s trying to prove to her people that she’s a big kid now! They’re coming with us :)

Anderson: The Normandy is yours. I have nothing left to teach you, child.
