Pain can serve as one of life's great teachers, but it is important to move through it and not become stuck in our pain. Pain comes and it goes. It is just one component to the grand cycle of life. And when experienced as such, pain can serve as an important teacher. It is when we get stuck in our pain that it becomes detrimental to our well-being and development. If you notice that you feel closed-off, resentful, heavy-hearted, or that you try very hard to avoid being hurt again, there may be a part of you that is still stuck in pain. We can get stuck in our pain for many reasons. As children, it was natural for us to cry, throw a tantrum, and let the experience move through us. By fully feeling our pain in this way, our emotions would wash us clean, leaving us open and available to new experiences. With age, though, we might have determined that expressing emotion was no longer appropriate, and so we developed a variety of coping strategies to deal with our discomfort. We may have learned to stuff our feelings down or to run away from them. Perhaps we began thinking that staying closed and unwilling to try new things would keep us safe from heartbreak, safe from rejection, and safe from failure. We may have even gotten so used to being in pain that the thought of being without it scares us. But, if we continue to hold onto it longer than necessary, we are expending a lot of energy that could instead be channeled into making our life experiences more positive. If you notice that you are continually connecting with the same familiar patterns of pain, consider embracing your feelings and letting go of your hurt. Whether your pain is from childhood or from an experience last week, see if you can give it room to move. Consistent self development is the only thing that keeps me sane. When I fall off of my daily self-development discipline my state of mind suffers, and I don’t deal with stress nearly as well. Here are the disciplines I’ve enjoyed in 2018, and that I’m bringing into 2019. I use a water monitoring app to make sure I get the required amount of water for a woman my age, height and weight. This is very important! 64 oz a day is great, but it’s not a very accurate formula and a lot of people require more. I use an active step tracker to make sure I get 90 minutes of active steps per day. I used to strive for 10,000 steps a day, but I found through research that all steps are not created equal and therefore active steps are more effective. I will also be adding an app that will prompt me to stand every 15-20 minutes because sitting is overtaking diabetes as a health wrecker! I meditate for ten minutes daily with binaural beats and affirmations. I journal in an app several times a day: A daily focus, some quick check-ins and a daily review. I also write in a gratitude journal app so that on bad days I can look back and see all the things I have to be grateful for! I am learning Spanish and Italian on Duolingo, so I work on that daily. I also use a knowledge training app daily to keep my brain active and increase what I know! I learn a Latin phrase a day (also an app). I listen to a condensed version of the most important news in the world that day. This may sound like a lot of stuff, but it takes way less time than you might think and the results are incredible! While working online (which is how Tyson and I support ourselves as we travel the country, 14 states and counting!) I listen to self development podcasts and audiobooks. This was so awesome! The #HooverDam is an amazing sight! This spot on the walking bridge over the dam is Arizona and Nevada at the same time! The cool thing is we didn’t even plan to stop at the dam, we were on our way to #Vegasbaby and @reignoverme11 had to hit the head lol! I’m so glad that we did though! This is where all of the magic happens! Lol. This is the back of the Flex. It’s a 6 seater car (two back seats). So we folded down the back seats and put a mattress back there, with big fluffy pillows. We have several huge comforters. The back is longer than it looks. I’m just shy of 6 ft and Tyson is 6ft1, and there is plenty of room for both of us to sleep comfortably. We have one huge suitcase, and 4 smaller bags (plus my purse of course!). We’re definitely roughing it, but we have what we need and we’re seeing the countryside! Over the weekend we were able to get a hotel room for a night and put badly needed new tires on the Flex. It was a great weekend, except for the fact that we’ve both been battling the flu for awhile. We’ve been to 14 states so far!! This journey of self discovery is magical and scary, awesome and sometimes upsetting, but it’s our journey that we’re taking together. It’s been four months and quite a ride, but we’re just getting started! What sort of plans do you have for 2019?
