Thanksgiving
I study at HyVee a lot. It's the new thing to do. Go in, find a booth in the dining section, and set up camp. Well, last night before I went to HyVee I attended my work Christmas party, where we receive a fabulous meal, a free turkey, a free goodie bag and our name goes into the drawing for multiple door prizes from everything from fishing lures and a kayak, to a muzzle loader rifle and big screen TVs. On top of all of that, we get an extra associate discount than we normally do. As I left the party I bought a hoodie that I normally couldn't afford, and that with my extra discount still cost me $40, with the attitude of "treating myself" to something nice.
I got to HyVee and began to study, seeing a few people I knew. I also saw a homeless man in a booth, eating a meal, his overstuffed book bag next to him. I kept studying and as I left, Christ reached down and shoved a big ol' piece of reality in my face. I had just spent $40 on a sweatshirt and this man was using HyVee as shelter from the bitter cold and rain outside. I had an oversized raincoat to protect me as I traveled to and from my car and another winter coat at my apartment. I didn't need both. I came home and told my concerns to my roommate and how I wanted to give my coat to the man. She told me that maybe I would get another opportunity. Well tonight I went back to Hyvee after I got off of work and, sure enough, he was there. This time he sat at a table slightly hidden with his notebook and other items on the table in front of him. In his hands he held a tiny, black Bible and he was reading it out loud. I found a booth, got comfy, and started studying, keeping my eye on him every once and awhile. I texted my roommate and she brought me the coat and I began to ponder what I would say to the man. As I finished my studying I began to get more and more nervous. I decided to write a Scripture passage on notecards and put them in the coat's pockets. I threw the only cash I had in with them, $1.62. Butterflies were in my stomach and I was scared that he may get angry or offended by the offer. I packed up my things and left them all in the booth, I walked passed him to the trash can and then as I came back, paused at his table. He sat with his hands folded in front of him, eyes closed. "...Hi," I managed to croak out, "I'm MaryKate." The man opened his eyes, they were a soft hazel, and responded, "Hi," with a curious look.
"What's your name?" I asked, hearing myself and thinking that I sounded like a 5-year-old.
"Steve." His voice was warm and wise sounding.
"Steve? I was just wondering if you wanted to," I paused, unsure where I was going with the sentence, and finished uneasily with, "tell me about your story. If you want...you don't have to." I realize now that it probably sounded as if I didn't really want to hear it, but it was just the butterflies escaping through my esophagus.
Steve looked at me with a slightly amused look of someone who's soul was worn. I felt young, ungrateful and pathetic in his gaze. I have no idea what he was thinking, but he replied with a, "Huh. My story....is.....complicated," with a glance at his bag, which I noticed included a small guitar case strapped on, a ukelele possibly.
"You don't have to," I said probably a little too quickly, the butterflies were fluttering faster now. "Do you have another coat? Because I have one I don't need if you would like it. It's waterproof."
He looked slightly taken aback and his warm eyes darted to his bag again, "Uh...no, I have one."
"Are you sure? I have it with me, right over there if you want it."
"No, that's okay. I don't need it." This time the corners of his mouth turned upward just a little, and I couldn't tell if it was an appreciative smirk or a 'this girl is ridiculous' smirk.
I asked once more, "Okay. Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," said Steve.
"Okay. Well, have a good night. It was nice to meet you."
"Thank you. It was nice to meet you, too."
I went, put on my coat, picked up my book bag and the coat I was offering him, and headed outside, where I started crying in my car. What could I have said differently? Why didn't I offer him anything else? Or to buy him something? Or if he'd eaten that night? Or just talk with him? Here I was, headed home in my car, to my bed, to get some sleep before I had to go to my job in the morning. Talk about a reality check. Maybe I'll buy Steve dinner tomorrow night.

Quote
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
