Iranian state television on Tuesday afternoon urged people to remove WhatsApp from their smartphones, alleging without specific evidence that the messaging app gathered user information to send to Israel. In a statement, WhatsApp said it was “concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most.” WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, meaning a service provider in the middle can’t read a message.

in honor of the least condescending usamerican, who just explained to me who Marsha P Johnson was, here's a passage by Jules Gill-Peterson that i always remember when this inevitably happens (particularly, when transfeminized people of the past, much reviled and marginalized in their time, are invoked to shut off transfeminist arguments of the present):
"Tragedy, that very Christian narrative of the predestined fall from grace, creates a difficult narrative situation. After all, tragedy can only be remedied by redemption, as when Christ, who bore the cross of the human world of sin, comes again. And indeed, the idealization of street queens today has that messianic quality to it. If only we celebrate Saint Sylvia and Saint Marsha properly, the second coming of the trans women of color of Stonewall will redeem us all. Our politics will be saved by invoking trans women of color and acting in their name. We will rescue them from their betrayal in the 1970s by idealizing them."

I'll still never forgive anyone who uses the chicago mentioned meme because it's obviously painted over brazil and to replace a beautiful republic in south america in any context with a united states anything should be a crime

also wrt the last post on US soldiers, i don't think americans are uniquely evil (i feel like i say this a lot abt everyone) but rather that the US is uniquely powerful and has a pretty evil foreign policy record and having a professional army instead of mandatory conscription does put the spotlight on the moral decisions of individual soldiers, doubly so due to american exceptionalism stressing concepts of freedom and individualism.
but i think impoverished people across the world, and people with mandatory conscription too (like israel or egypt) are also liable for the crimes their militaries order them to commit. just following orders is the nazi defense, after all. in some cases it isn't really relevant to get into the individual psyches of soldiers but rather to understand their positions as colonial or counterrevolutionary forces. im saying this because the past week in egypt has really reminded me how defensive egyptians get of their military and their soldiers even when they themselves are the target. and frankly this defensiveness is pointless. at the end of the day, you understand what you're being asked to do and what you're doing and either you pay the price or someone else does. but to do it and also demand to be guiltless and to have nobody else comment on this guilt is just unfettered nationalism.
anyway overall i think its good for americans to foster a popular culture that knows their military is full of war criminals in order to create a stigma for joining while it continues to be a professional military, and also to create an understanding with how the rest of the world sees it. from the age of 7 or 8 i associated the american flag with imperial violence bc of the invasion of iraq. i still find it a symbol of violence and oppression and i think less of people who proudly wear it. and thats bc of where im from and what america did, and i don't expect everyone to understand it, but i think it's good for more people to at least know that this is how its seen and why.

JSTOR for those of us who stupidly forgot to use your resources for personal research while enrolled in college classes, what can we do??? Google isn’t enough especially with the en 💩 ification of the 2020s
Here are a few options!
Check with your school's library to determine whether or not they offer alumni access.
Check with your local public library to see if they offer JSTOR access. Sometimes they offer on-site access, sometimes remote.
If you register for a personal account, you can read a limited number of articles per month for free!
We offer individual subscriptions under JPASS, with monthly or annual plans.

On consideration, I can't really blame folks for not realising that Seven Deadly Sins Squidward was apparently meant sincerely by its creator, because who the fuck picks Squidward to represent the voice of reason in that scenario? His literal role in the show is to be a sanctimonious twerp who's wrong about everything.

I don’t think people realize what keeping the internet running and producing most tech they use entails like. Physically, labor-wise, energy-wise.
