Oh hell, was it really today? Maxie was only awake and ready to carry out his duties via the support of five cups of coffee and sheer spite.

Nevertheless. Team Aqua - Archie with it - wouldn’t wait, so a meeting it was.

Not that, of course, this was destined to go well. Maxie remembered the last time both teams had met. He’d been deep into his statements on Team Magma’s current needs when that vexing human headache of a rival had the gall to fall asleep. Was he really that boring? Did his technique need dire improvement?

Of course not, the Great Maxie was flawless. Archie just didn’t get it.

Even then, Maxie still wasn’t exactly prepared for this meeting. He must’ve miscalculated the amount of work he still needed to do in organizing feedback from his admins and grunts, mapping timelines of what they’d accomplished together in the past few months, highlighting progress made on winning over the people of Hoenn once again --- usually he was on his game with these kinds of things, but something seemed... off.

What was wrong with him?

The knocking snapped him out of his thoughts as he stared at the half-finished slideshow on the monitor, puzzling over what he was missing. Three loud ones, followed by two quiet; only one person knocked in such a pattern. The inquiry only confirmed it; Team Aqua was here, whether he was ready or not.

And he wasn’t.

Maxie stood up and beelined to the door, cracking it open ever so slightly that his face could just fit within. “You’re early for once,” he observed in a flat tone, raising an eyebrow.

This wouldn’t end well one bit.

Hello Maxie, I appreciate that you work very hard, but because of this work ethic, is there ever times that you miss nights of sleep, or subsequently fall asleep at times or places you wouldn't expect? Please look after yourself!

“…Yes, actually. Running an elaborate organization such as Team Magma requires diligence, and anything can happen when you least expect it. There’s been times I’ve passed out from the amount of work on my plate. Nevertheless, Team Magma needs me. It’s imperative that I’m there when necessary.”

He paused. “You have no need to worry over me.”

Maxie stared at the screen, his lips pressed into a thin line. He crossed his fingers together in thought. Was Team Aqua so dumb as to let their plans fall into the hands of Team Magma? Nevertheless, after what had happened with Groudon? It was doubtful that Archie would want this.

So he did the right thing, and sent the plans over to the other team leader. There may have been a frowny emoji face attached to it, but nobody could confirm or deny.

Maxie just stared at the anon wordlessly. Some people just didn’t get genius, and that was their problem. Not his in any way. He just stared, and stared, and stared.

“If you don’t have anything intelligent to say, then leave.”

Maxie looked up from his miniature model train set he was working on. He held a paintbrush over what looked like a miniature replica of Mount Chimney, red paint dripping on top of it like lava. “Don’t be ridiculous. I have no time for such trivialities.” 

He looked down and brushed an errant drop of red paint off of a miniature tree. “Every waking minute of my life is dedicated to my work.”
