Het waarom beantwoord is de eerste voorstelling die Mathieu Wijdeven onder de vleugels van Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam maakt. Zijn vooronderzoek bestond naast een stamboomonderzoek ook uit een straatonderzoek. Mathieu maakte een sculptuur in de vorm van een hoofd, gebaseerd op een portret van G.G.T. Rustwijk, en trok hiermee door Rotterdamse wijken. Als een stil protest, om te voorkomen dat zijn betovergrootvader in de vergetelheid raakt. Hij sprak met voorbijgangers over Rustwijk, zijn gedichten en zijn onemanshow en vroeg mensen onder andere wat zíj weten van hun familiestamboom. Vanavond is de opening van het Welcome To Our Guesthouse. Hier is een video installatie van mij te zien die ik de afgelopen tijd heb gemaakt: In the installation Het Waarom beantwoord you see Mathieu walking around the streets of Rotterdam with a self-made sculpture, inspired by his great-great-grandfather G.G.T. Rustwijk. The man lived in Suriname and was a writer, painter and theatre maker at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. In the beginning of 2019 Mathieu found a poetry book, theatre play, photo and some other documents of G.G.T. Rustwijk. He then started drawing on a portrait of him and turned it into a sculpture of his head. With this head he walked through neighbourhoods of Rotterdam to collect stories. He asked the people on the streets what they know about their great-great-grandparents. And what they know of Suriname. How do they relate to Suriname in the year 2019? After the Welcome To Our Guesthouse festival Mathieu turns this installation into a performance, which will premiere in the spring of 2020 at Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam.
