“ Marcel’s reign won’t last forever. ” she commented confidently, she knew there were still a number of people left who considered themselves allies of Klaus and his family. “ In all honesty I’m kind of surprised you’re still here. I mean, after everything this place has been through, after everything you’ve seen, you still have that choice whereas some of us don’t. ” Kendra commended him for staying, that’s for sure. “Hey - have you ever seen me hurt someone? ” she questioned in over dramatised shock, “ I mean… Not unless they deserved it. ” she teased lightly.
Matt let out a deep sigh. "Yeah, I know." He just wasn't sure what would be better. Marcel at least didn't really touch the rules, he actually kinda needed them. What would happen if a new person would rule this city? What would happen if Klaus would come back? Things had been pretty great for four years. He wasn't really looking forward to going back to how it was. "With all those supernatural things going on and all those vampires, someone has to look after the humans, right?" Matt shrugged his shoulders and curled his lips up into a smile. "I have a choice, but they haven't. So, I kinda chose protecting them." He nodded firmly. Even after all those years he still stood behind his choice. "No, I haven't seen you harm anyone." But he did know that she wasn't innocent either. No one was in this town, Apart from those who didn't know what was going on.

“God, it would be hilarious to watch a vampire get arrested for murder,” she smiled wide, a small laugh escaping, “If they didn’t kill the cop, they’d probably just look super confused.” Julianna had no idea why this was so amusing to her. “We’re all animals,” she answered back, but she actually agreed with him, “But I happen to think werewolves are at least a little bit better than vampires. That’s just me though so…” She kind of hated being lumped in with vampires to be honest. “Really?” now that peaked her interest. After all, it was Klaus that was going to welcome her pack back into the city, “And why do you think that? Marcel seems pretty damn pleased with himself.
Matt grinned. Yeah, he had to admit he kinda liked the view, but he was also kinda certain that it was not gonna happen. "Somehow if they've already murdered, I'm pretty sure it will end up with a dead cop." Or more. He let out a sigh. If it was only that simple, if they could simply arrest those who broke the rules, but that was not it worked. When all things went wrong, the humans were still at the mercy of the vampires and everything else in town. "I don't really care about what someone is..." Matt shrugged his shoulders. "I care about who you are. If you're a non killing vampire who's nice and such? Great! If you're a nice werewolf? Perfect! If you're a friendly witch? Wonderful. If you're a kind human? Nice." He paused for a moment. "It's the who and not the what that counts in the end." He cocked his head slightly. "It's Klaus Mikaelson. Every time you kinda think he's gone, he comes back. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes this time. The question is how long it will take."

“Well that’s just the thing, humans immediately jump to fear of the unexplained,” he pointed out, fingers rubbing over his chin, “I can understand, here are these supernatural species that have the power to hurt or kill at will. But historically, humans jump to their conclusions before that is decided. Look at all the people hung or burned for heresy after just being accused of witchcraft.” The witch gave a small nod, a smirk starting to appear on his lips, “I do believe our kind should be governed, regulated. I just don’t believe putting a vampire who only cares about making things good for vampires or a hybrid with wide spread reputation for evil are the ones that should be in charge.” Witch a soft sigh, Ivan knew he had to give some credit where credit was due, “The only thing Klaus got right, and I can’t believe I’m even saying this, was bringing together those leaders. The only problem was I doubt he actually cared what they had to say.” Ivan didn’t like the idea of unnecessarily dead humans, didn’t like the idea of not getting retribution, “I hope you won’t have to either.”
Matt swallowed. He kinda remembered how he had gotten some kinda gun and had shot his best friend when he had found out about this whole crap. "It's kinda scary when people are stronger and faster than you are." He cocked his head and let out a deep sigh for a moment. "Especially when they need your blood to survive." Yeah, the werewolves and witches were scary and Matt didn't doubt that if they wanted to they could do more damage than the vampires probably, but the vampires needed humans blood, their blood, his blood. It kinda made the difference. "But yeah, humans can be monsters too." He was the first to admit it. He had seen it too often, he had seen too often how humans had hurt each other or had not cared about others getting hurt as long as they got what they wanted. The hunters had been a great example of that. "What you're saying is that we need a leader who really cares about everyone equally, someone who can united us all instead of wanting to start a war." He was not sure if there was someone like that in this world. He wasn't even sure if he himself was someone like that.

“It’s unfortunate that humans tell themselves that this kind of stuff doesn’t exist,” he shook his head, “I mean, think about it. All these stories and movies and television shows about ghosts and witches, werewolves and vampire and no humans question where all this lore comes from? It genuinely puzzles me. Sometimes it’s like they want to believe in this stuff but I don’t think many humans could handle it if they found out the truth. I mean, how did you react when you found out all this stuff was real?” He was genuinely curious at this point, it was something he wondered about often. “It doesn’t really matter what I think, this isn’t my home. What do you think?” he kept questioning the human in front of him but it was only because he was wanted to hear it from someone who actually lived here, “Where I live, it’s not like this. It’s not perfect but we have a generally okay relationship with the vampires, their leader has even been invited to our coven meetings and parties.” Ivan wasn’t sure what to think about the cops covering up murderers. Sure, it was probably necessary to keep the humans in the dark and the tiniest bit safer. “Well let’s hope you don’t have to do that often,” he said showing the human his own brand of support.
Matt shrugged his shoulders. "I guess it's better to be afraid of something that doesn't really exist than to be afraid of something that does. They kinda like to scare themselves by watching all of it, but they don't wanna deal with the whole nightmare thing if they would really start to think that this whole crap could be real." He paused for a moment. And maybe that was kinda better too. He didn't really wanna deal with having to keep the humans in check too. It was already hard enough to keep those vampires from harming people. And he had already seen how hard it was to explain to people that his friends were vampires, but not the bad ones. "I guess there shouldn't be a king at all. There is a mayor, this country has a president. Why would we wanna have a King in this city? Because no one can behave without one?" He raised his eyebrows and shook his head. "I mean, yeah, a kinda meeting between people from all groups might be great, but why a king?" He paused for a moment and then he licked his lips. "I never really did it myself and I hope I won't have to."

“For the dominance? The show of power? It’s empowering, having the power to take a life and it’s something we all have but deal with very differently.” That was just the way she saw it. People murdered, they hurt others and it’s not always crimes of passion or what the fuck ever else. Sometimes it was just because they could. That was the harsh truth she had leaned to accept. Her people were chased out by vampires because the vampires could do it. They were cursed because the witches could do it for the vampires. “Oh jeez, that sounds just delightful,” it was like there was going to be no winning no matter who was in charge. Unless, of course, neither of them were in charge, “At least I never really had to deal with him.”
Matt raised his eyebrows. "I don't really know what it feels like to be a vampire and such, but..." He shrugged his shoulders and cocked his head. "It doesn't really matter how it feels and such. We all have a choice. I mean, humans can murder each other too, but when they do we put them behind bars." He licked his lips and looked up at the girl in front of him. "Vampires, humans, werewolves, witches, we all have the choice of what we do with life and it's our choices that define who we are." He avoided her glance for a moment. He had done things he regretted, things he'd probably make up for for the rest of his life, but that was kinda part of life too. You did shitty things, you tried to make up for them, tried to do better. But some vampires didn't seem to learn that lesson. "It's kinda hard to believe he's gonna stay away for good..."

“Can you imagine if they did?” the witch just had to question, “Humans can hardly learn to accept each other’s differences. If they found out about the supernatural, it wouldn’t matter what you or if you were good or bad. We’d all be hunted down just for being different.” Ivan submitted to Matt’s points, nodding his head a little, “Klaus overthrows Marcel, Marcel overthrows Klaus. Just how competent can a vampire king be if they just keep getting overthrown?” At the mention of locals with memory loss, Ivan stood straight up, fists clenching. This wasn’t why here but he’d be damned if he just let vampires feed on whoever they wanted to. “If a body is found, would it get covered up?” he had to ask, curious on just how things work.”
Matt took a deep breath. "Yeah..." He swallowed and he cocked his head. "I know that telling them is not really gonna work. I mean, it will probably lead to a huge war and a huge mess and more people are gonna die..." But sometimes it seemed so much easier than protecting them from something they didn't even know was out there. "So don't worry, I'm not gonna spill the secret." He shook his head. "I'm not gonna be the one blowing up the peace here." He was gonna be the one trying to make sure it wouldn't explode at all. "So, who do you think should be king then?" Matt wondered if there was any king who wouldn't be challenged in New Orleans. Because there was no way there would be a king capable of controlling them all. "We'll come up with some kinda explanation. An animal attack, something else. It doesn't really matter. We're the police and somehow the humans trust us to tell the truth." His lips were forming a straight line and he sighed. "It's the thing I hate most..."

“ You’ve lived here long enough to know there’s always something… It’s always calm before the storm, right? Only it’s been calm for way too long. I think it’s a new record. ” Kendra knew deep down that it was because Marcel had crushed the Mikaelson family and any support they had behind them, but somedays she couldn’t bear to hold onto that thought. “ You know what, we could do with a detective on the inside. But maybe then I wouldn’t be able to get away with half of the things I do… ” being a witch was probably against the law somehow.
Matt shrugged his shoulders. "I guess that somehow I still hope that one day there won't be another storm or something." But Kendra was right. Four years must be some kinda record and he should be kinda happy already that it had lasted so long. The human community had been doing great the last four years though and he kinda hated it to see that change again, even though it was only slowly. "Well, I've not even started the training and such, so I might take a while before I'll get there..." He wasn't even sure if he was allowed to start the training at all. "And hey, you're not doing anything that harms humans, right?" Matt playfully asked while he brushed her shoulders.

“ I see you haven’t changed much, Vanilla. ” it was clear Matt still hated the vampire, still hadn’t let go of all the things Damon had done in the past… Which admittedly, was a lot of things but Damon was too tired to fight his defence right now.
Matt curled his lips up into a smile. "I got a few years older and I'm seeing if I can become a detective now. But yeah, I guess I'm still the same Matt." He shrugged his shoulders. "What about you? What did you do during the last four years?"

“Humans or witches or werewolves, they’ve all been made victims to the vampires in one way or another,” he looked around, “especially in this city. Humans wouldn’t be in danger if the vampires had a better system. That’s none of my business though.” He wasn’t there to have an opinion on how the city should be run, just to make sure the right person was running it. Part of him felt gross knowing Klaus was considered that right person. “There were those three hunters, with the fuckhole who killed Alex way back when,” he sighed, not liking what he was about to give them credit for, “They had the vampires in this city scared, Klaus used that fear to make the vampires rely on him. People aren’t going to give a shit about a title – king or officer, it doesn’t matter – you need a reputation if you’re going to make them listen whether it’s with your fists or your words.”
"Yeah, but the humans are the only ones who don't even know about it." Matt shrugged his shoulders. Sometimes he wondered if it wouldn't be easier to just tell everyone, but then he imagined the chaos, the fear, the witch hunt that would happen. He didn't really wanna turn this town into a war zone again, because it were always the humans who were the first to die. "It would kinda help if they'd follow the rules." He knew that the rules didn't really protect the tourists, but that was a loss he had kinda accepted. "Look, I know how things work, okay?" Matt nodded. "And that's the whole reason things are changing for the worst. The vampires aren't afraid anymore. They're starting to feel overconfident or something." He paused for a moment. "I've noticed there are locals with memory loss and such again. I'm kinda waiting until we find a body, although I actually hope that's not gonna happen."

“ What act of great kindness did I do to deserve the presence of the most noble of them all? ” Damon smiled in amusement at his own words but actually turned to face Matt to give him a smidgen of his time.
Matt raised his eyebrows and he curled his lips up into a smile. "I guess the four years of calm have kinda gotten to your head, Damon." He shook his head and he hid his hands in the pockets of his jackets. "But I guess that calm is some act of kindness, right?"

“ I’ve had to keep my head down a bit.” the blonde admitted sheepishly, “ not everyone appreciates me still having an influence on the quarter and I quite enjoy having my head on my shoulders. ” Kendra commented in light amusement as if it were a common thing to have to declare they rather enjoy being alive. “ But that smile of yours still does wonders for mine. ” as she spoke, her lips began to curve upwards. “ How’ve you been doing? Good, I hope? ”
Matt grinned. "Yeah, I understand..." He licked his lips and he shrugged his shoulders. "I'm just glad to see that you're still alive and such. I mean, I thought those last four years were kinda calm, but I'm kinda sure there are some things happening here that I don't know, so..." He had always been the last to know and the last to figure it out. He was sure that had not changed all of a sudden or something. "I'm doing fine. I'm a police officer now and maybe I'm gonna try to be a detective or something..."

“My guess would be that it’s more about the hunt. There’s a thrill to it and don’t tell me humans don’t feel that because there are trophy hunters out there that say different,” Julianna had felt it herself as a wolf when she’d track down a rabbit here and there, “And it’s the dominance. Not that I agree with bloodsuckers, I actually have come not to like many that I meet. It’s hard to like them.” She tilted her head, fingers playing with the end of her hair that extended past her shoulders. “So he wasn’t much batter than the rest of them,” she concluded, giving a small nod, “They listened to him before Klaus, he’ll probably get them to fall back in line eventually.”
"I guess I don't really like those trophy hunters either. I mean, why would you really hurt someone when you don't really need to? You wanna shoot? Great, go and find yourself some plates and shoot those. You wanna chase something? I'm sure you can do so without killing it. Killing is not a sport." He shrugged his shoulders. "They're not all wrong. Some of those bloodsuckers are my friends, but if anyone touches a human, I'm done." He shook his head and licked his lips. "No..." Matt softened his voice. "He wasn't much better. I don't really think he was better at all. He was kinda having some sorta God complex or so. He decided what would happen. Yeah, he kinda decided there had to be peace, but if he would have decided a week later to break it, it would have happened."

“See? It takes a while for you to see logic, but at least you end up seeing it.” And it saved him the trouble of having to deal with a part of the police force that was working against him. The vampires were already tiring enough, he didn’t want to have to demand the human faction leaders to keep their people in check. “Klaus had the means to make everyone terrified. But not anymore. We’ve dealt with that.” And still, years later, Klaus managed to make his influence felt in town. Something that annoyed Marcel to no end. He smiled and patted Matt on the shoulder. “Good, good… maybe it was a good thing we had this conversation anyway.” He gestured to his car. “May I, or do you have something else we have to deal with?”
Matt raised his eyebrows but he didn't really say anything. He wasn't really sure what Marcel would do if things would go wrong. Yeah, he had been the one making those rules and such, but Matt doubted if he was any better than Klaus. When it came to protecting human, he knew that only humans could do that. Because in the end, the vampires didn't really care about the humans. They were nothing but food, after all. "Yeah, I noticed." And it was the fact that the vampires weren't afraid anymore that worried him. He wasn't a big fan of fear and such, but at least afraid vampires followed the rules. These ones? These ones didn't. "No, you're fine. You can go now. I guess we'll see each other."

“I’m here to at least make it a little bit better for others,” the answer was honest and sincere. It was part of his code as a warrior, as fucking cliche as it sounded. “And words will?” Ivan didn’t say it in a way to make the other feel stupid, he was honestly curious, “I’ve come to find that sometimes you need take a little action to get the desired result.” Ivan leaned back against a brick wall, dropping his bag on the ground. “What makes you think they don’t already know? Someone’s got to be regulating the way the human side of everything is run,” he didn’t know that side of the politics, he didn’t even know if the humans had a side of the politics.
"Yeah, I'm kinda here to make it a little better for the humans in this town." Somehow they always ended up forgotten. The werewolves took care of themselves. The witches took care of themselves. The vampires took care of those they kinda liked, but the humans? The humans didn't even know they were in danger. "No, I don't really think words will either." He took a deep breath. "I don't know. I kinda lost track of who knows what in this town, but I'll figure it out, okay?" He hoped that the mayor did know what was going on in this town. He didn't really wanna think about what would happen if the Mayor was starting something he didn't even understand.

Matt raised his eyebrows. He had his hands in the pockets of his jeans and with a smile on his face he shook his head. "I guess I don't really wanna believe that." He stared at Kendra for a moment. "Damn, It feels like I haven't really seen you in years!" He wasn't sure if it was because she had been outta town or because their paths had simply not crossed. He had been kinda busy after all.
Stepping outside from the cafe, Kendra fought to quickly hide her small notebook of spells into her bag because she knew that a pair of eyes or two were always on her. “ Can you believe I used to be one of those? ” she nodded towards the stalls of tarot card readers. “ You know, people will pay anything to hear what they want. ”

gerardxmarcel:
“So somehow we do agree. You really think Klaus would have just kept it at killing my friends and eventually me? You and the other humans would have been next. Simple.” Klaus had simply crossed a line, one he had crossed so many times before. “This wouldn’t be the first city he destroyed. It’d just be another name on his endless list.” With supporters of Klaus slowly getting back to town, he could use all the support from the ones who had to fear a return of the Originals as well. Matt might be one of those people. “I’ll deal with them once I found them. Promise. These rules are mine and they need to be kept in place to make this place run smoothly.” And yeah… Matt was right. Humans were always the first to die. Maybe that was their place in the grand scheme of things. But he needed those humans to keep New Orleans the way he liked it. So if that meant he had to protect them… that was how it was going to be. “Fine. I’ll see them.” He smiled slightly at the last remark. “So do I. Maybe we’re on the same side after all, Donovan.”
Matt kept silent for a moment. The he shook his head and swallowed. "No, I kinda know he wouldn't have stopped there." He licked his lips and looked at the humans passing by, not knowing what Matt and Marcel were talking about, not knowing that they were surrounded by monsters. "But somehow vampires were terrified of him. I guess we all kinda were..." It wasn't like life had been calm with Klaus in town. Actually, he had heard from quite a few people that New Orleans had been doing quite okay before the hybrid had come back to claim the town he called his. "Good." Matt nodded and he crossed his arms over his chest. He felt something in the air and he didn't really like that something. He hoped that somehow Marcel would be able to stop it, because he didn't know what else to do, he didn't know what to do if instead of making things better, things would get worse. "Right now, we're at least not on different sides." All Matt wanted was keeping the humans in New Orleans and his friends safe. He didn't care who helped him. He didn't care if it was Klaus or Marcel or anyone else. As long as the humans were safe, he would be fine.

gerardxmarcel:
“Then you should stop longing openly for the days he was here. That might not be that good for your health. Not everyone looks back on those times with good memories.” And too many of those who wanted those days back, were coming into town. He knew it. He got the reports of it. And he didn’t like what they were saying. Klaus wasn’t dead. If anyone would find a way to resurrect him, he would have a huge problem on his hands. “The last four years is the result of what I have done here. The ones that might get out of hand, might be newcomers in town. The ones who want Klaus back. Do you realise what that means?” If they managed to get Klaus back, no one would be safe. At least no one who had profited from his disappearance. “I am talking with the human faction, as I’ve always done. The are a part of this city. A vital one.” He nodded. “You’re gonna hand those names over to me and I’ll look into it. My faction, my responsibility.” He wasn’t going to get some overactive police officer involved.
"Look, if you keep those vampires in check, I don't want Klaus anywhere near me, my friends, or this town." Matt shrugged his shoulders. "I don't care who rules the city, as long as the humans and my friends are safe, okay?" He wasn't sure what Klaus would do if he'd come back. Yeah, keeping those rules Marcel had set seemed to fit his plan the last time he was here, but who said it would still fit him this time? Klaus could change his mind at any moment and any time. And he knew what would happen if Klaus decided that humans were not important to him anymore. "I know that it means that if we don't stop them, humans in this town are gonna die. Because that's what it always means. That humans die." Matt raised his eyebrows and took a deep breath. He was never gonna be as fast and strong as those vampires. But he could try to be smarter. "I'll text you the names later. I need to look them up, but I wrote them all down." Matt cocked his head. "I actually kinda liked the last four years. I'm don't wanna go back to what it was like."
