On Behalf of All Artists

What happened in Paris yesterday is a blow to all artists. Beyond “Freedom of Speech” for all, in the arts we particularly value our freedom to express whatever we choose, even to criticize anything or anyone. Yesterday at Paris’s Charlie Hebdo, twelve people lost their lives over artistic expression in the form of satire.

To the people who think the free world’s expression is limited to YOUR beliefs…

As much as we may disagree with you, even your right to criticize us is protected here. Isn’t that an amazing thing?! A beautiful thing? Sure we may be a bit cocky at times, yet we believe firmly you have a right to speak what you feel and think, and we protect you in that right even if we strongly disagree.

When you’re in a different country, please don’t expect that culture to have a different understanding, different values, way of being to please you, or expect our expression to be limited because you can keep putting fear into us. That won’t work any more than we can change your beliefs and values.  

So here’s a little disclaimer on behalf of all artists:

We’re going to write a lot of music, say a lot of things, make a lot of jokes, draw a lot of cartoons that will piss you off, and you’re just going to have to accept it and deal with it, just like everyone else, every race and creed. No one, not even a god or a prophet is above criticism in our art. We believe that is our god given right. 

Artists of the Free World are here to stay, and WE ARE FEARLESS!

"Naked Room Service"...a true story

The most embarrassingly funny thing that has ever happened to me...just happened!!

I’m at my hotel and I ordered room service for dinner. After dinner I showered and was getting ready to chill in bed for the night, watch some TV. I was still naked when I realized my dinner platter was still sitting here. “I should put the tray out” I thought. For a brief moment I considered the fact that I was naked, but what the heck, I’ll just open the door, shove the tray out before anyone sees me.

I open the door with one hand and place tray down with my left hand. I reach down to push it a hair further and…CLICK!

A moment of surreality hit me and I had to question whether I was actually in the situation I was in. “Could this be real? Am I standing in the hallway of the hotel…naked…no key…no phone…with an empty plate on the floor in front of me?” Yep.

So now, I’m naked and afraid. But HOE! There is a nice red napkin and a nice white napkin on the tray! I proceed to tie the two together and make myself a Tarzan style cover. I’m able to get my wrap far enough around to hold with one hand, covering the goods.

No one in sight yet, I realize my options are limited. 1. I can knock on someone’s door and ask them to call the front desk for me. 2. I can take the naked walk of shame to the elevator and go down to the front desk and explain what happened and I need a replacement key. Facing the potential reality of number 2 is killing me, but making me laugh at the same time as I remember a similar scene from Breaking Bad season 1.

Suddenly I see an angel at the end of the hall…well, she’s a maid (in these situations they’re the same thing). I yell to her and ask her to come over. With one hand, I’m holding napkins around my waist. With the other, I’m gripping the steel dish cover. I didn’t know what to do with the cover since I had a Tarzan wrap, so I was holding the cover as more of a shield.

I explain to the maid what’s going on. She smirks. She clearly doesn’t speak much English. She says she’ll go down and get someone, so I think/hope that’s what she’s going to do. Meanwhile, I hear a woman moaning from the room across from me. Of course, that has to be happening now too. God, you have a sense of humor!

Five minutes later no one has arrived! I see a man come out of the elevator and he’s walking to his room. I yell to him “Excuse me, I have a bit of an emergency”. I explain the situation and he calls down for me. I hear him say “There is someone locked inside a room”. I decided not to correct him considering that a naked person locked OUTSIDE the room wasn’t enough to get someone up here.

Finally, a man who looks to be in a maintenance uniform comes out of the elevator and walks toward me. As he gets close he starts laughing politely. For me, it’s slow motion. I can hear Foo Fighters “Here comes my hero!” The kind man unlocks the door for me, bringing this story to an end. I am now back in my cozy room, clothed ;)
