“Dad would have your head if he heard you say that,” Kat said with a smile- referring both to prioritizing her birthday over royal duties and the ‘getting put of his misery’ comment. She took the box from her brother and gasped as she opened it. “It’s perfect, Matthias. Thank you.” She clasped the bracelet around her wrist, and grinned. “A vacation sounds perfect. Maybe somewhere tropical, I think we’ve probably seen more than enough snow and ice to last a lifetime.” Though today it was warm and bright, the warm days in Khatanga were few and far between, just as the bitterly cold days in the Netherlands had been.
“Yea, well, I don’t really care what he thinks anymore.” Which was strange for the crown. He’s spent the majority of his life wanting to rule just like him and Matthias had definitely seen the error to that way of thinking. “Our country is important, Kat, but so id making time for family. Probably not the last birthday I will miss but I’m aiming for it to be one of the few.” Smiling, he was glad that she seemed to like the gift. “Looks good. Maybe I’m better at this present thing than I thought.” Giving her a teasing grin, he laid back on his hands as she spoke, nodding. “Tropical sounds amazing right about now. I’m hoping that we’re not so used to the cold weather that we’ll burn up in normal settings though.”

The smack of another human body running into her knocked her off kilter, but seeing who it was that was now apologizing and trying to make sure she was okay, is what took Lea’s breath away. She had been trying desperately to avoid the man standing in front of her, but fate had other plans. And, at first, she was dumbfounded on what to say, once again getting lost in his eyes like the first day she met him at the bookstore in town, “Um, uh…yeah. I’m fine.” Looking down at the boxes of chocolate, she let out a soft sigh, “It’s not about me though. It’s about the chocolate. Don’t want to disappoint the other half with crushed chocolate…” She realized what she had said, good and well knowing that he was a part of that ‘other half’. “Sorry. So a paint war, huh?” She glanced past Matthias to the person who had the glob of neon green paint at the ready.
He paused with her comment, discomfort coursing through him along with a little shame. He’d pretended with her for so long that he wasn’t part of that group that he was sure she still forgot sometimes. “I think us other half would be just fine with whatever chocolate you brought. And if they’re not, they do without a simple indulgence for the day.” Matthias handed the box over to her while having the decency to show that he was, in fact, ashamed of himself for what he had done to her. He’ only been thinking of himself when he was with Lea, trying desperately to lessen the heartache he felt for someone else. “Yea, it’s a good thing this party is near the water.” He stood, hand going to rub the back of his neck as he gestured toward the lake with the other. “I don’t know who came up with a paint war but it seems to be a hit.”

For once, things were getting better. The threat of war was gone, her and Matthias’ engagement was accepted by the Netherlands, and the people here no longer spent hours whispering about her behind her back. Her parents still refused to communicate with her, and she was still no longer a Royal, but there was only so much she could do about it. So instead, she focused on the day’s festivities, making sure that Matthias could join her soon.
So once he did, she smiled, leaning against him lightly as her hands moved to rest on his arms, comfortably wrapped around her waist. “And what would you do if we did have a problem like that?” She teased him, leaning so she could kiss him quickly. It was difficult, being away from him on a daily basis now that they were trully oficial, but moments like this were bound to make it worth it.
As she kissed him he took a moment to think about her question, though he was slightly distracted the feeling of her lips on his. So, as he gently, and reluctantly, pulled away from her he sighed playfully in an attempt to stall a little more. What would he do if she were running around with someone else. He had thought about it a few times, even dreaded it when they weren’t together, but it was hard to know how to react to a situation that hadn’t happened. “I think I want to say I would respect whatever you wanted and if it wasn’t me then I’d let you be happy with someone else but in actuality I’d probably punch somebody....respectfully, of course.” And repeatedly. He still had a lot of pent up anger that needed to be let out on someone. “But could I blame you, really?”

margaritaxromanova:
“I’m surprised you don’t go to bed at six, darling.” Margarita teased her fiance as he sat down next to her. The glass he presented her was enough for her to finish up her own drink, and take that one instead. If she didn’t feel like partying, then she would definitely go right ahead and get absolutely drunk. Please. If we’re not up by five am sharp, then something is clearly wrong. And we’re going to have a dog, who’ll be just as lazy.” She argued, but even then, the argument was absolutely silly. Then again, that’s how this whole day felt, and while it was absolutely unusual, Maggie couldn’t bring herself to improve it.
“Mattie, you really should know that it’s not the time to be happy.” She insisted, taking another sip of her wine before finally looking over at him. That’s where the odd thing caught her eye; he was smiling. Why was he smiling if their countries were five minutes away from the war? “Why are you smiling? It’s not funny.”
“Between you and Kat the palace is going to turn into a zoo. I’m surprised I don’t have a giraffe in my backyard at this point.” Thought he wouldn’t mind that if the animal needed a safe place to rehabilitate and they could make it happen. He’d never been against animals, Kat just had a bleeding heart when it came to them. He continued to watch her closely to gauge any reactions and as she questioned him, he shrugged and sat back in his chair with a rare air of smugness. “What if I told you that a miracle happened and your brother and I actually worked together to come up with a solution? Oh, and let’s not forget that our parents have all agreed to it.”

Maggie couldn’t help but beam happily as Matthias complimented her cooking skills. It was silly, but she had worked hard to do something nice for him, especially after everything the two of them had gone through. All of this was small in the grand scheme of things, but she was happy that she could do something nice to him. “Don’t get used to it, you’ll still be the one cooking everything else.” Maggie smiled as she took another bite of her food. It was enjoyable, but it was his company that made everything just about a thousand times better.
Once the dinner was over, Maggie was ready to call it a day and spend the rest of the evening with Matthias, but the surprise he had prepared her was still at the back of her mind. “Don’t you dare underestimate anything, darling.” Maggie smiled, waiting impatiently as he slipped back into the bathroom to get it all ready. But as he finally stepped aside, letting her walk in, Maggie was proven that the wait was definitely worth it. A wide smile appearing on her face, she stepped inside, looking over everything that he had prepared. It had been so long since they had gotten a chance to just be a couple, do romantic things, yet this was worth the wait. “I love it!” She exclaimed, looking back at her boyfriend. “You’re joining me, right?”
He grinned as soon as he saw her reaction, the prince allowing that smile to slowly turn into a grimace while he pretended he was thinking about her question. “I don’t know, Mags...” Matthias moved forward and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into him as he leaned closer so that their lips were inches from each other. “We might not get any relaxing done if I join you.” His smile returned before he kissed her softly, hands running down her sides and to her hips to play with the fabric of her clothing in a teasing manner. “But if it’s what you want it’s what you shall get.”

@margaritaxromanova
Agreeing to meet Maggie at the beach party hadn’t been a hard choice to make. Their engagement was officially recognized in the Netherlands now, he’d just helped stop whatever downfalls that were coming out of the dispute between his country and another, and life was pretty nice at the moment. Only one issue lingered in the back of his mind these days but he couldn’t do much about it, not while stuck in such a remote location and wanting to keep it all a secret. Despite that, he was grinning as he made his way towards the shore where Maggie was standing, his arms snaking around her waist while he pressed his chest to her back and placed a light kiss to her cheek. “I would say ‘guess who’ but if anyone else is doing this these days we might have a problem.”

@matthias-meijer
It was a nice day and Solveig was sipping on her second glass of wine. She’d promised herself that she’d have only a couple, so she could be sharp for the main event. She’d gone to quickly through the first though and was doing her best to pace herself now. She’d been mostly mingling aimlessly with people she barely knew, though she’d been sure to keep one eye on Matthias. Without making it obvious she’d moved through the crowed toward him, landing at his side as he finished his conversation. “Congratulations on the engagement, your highness,” she said politely, not sure what else there was too say. If she was being honest she didn’t really have a reason to talk to him, other than conversation that had started in the medical room. Now wasn’t exactly the place for that either though, and really, she was just looking for one last excuse to talk to him before she lost him forever.
With everything that had been going on lately with the Netherlands Matthias had let other things fall to the wayside. It felt thinking that his daughter was a second priority but he couldn’t do anything about Astrid all the way in Russia and talking to Solveig about her could wait. They had all the time in the world around here. So he’d been relishing in his first major accomplishment as a royal for as long as he could and enjoying his day as he made the round at the beach party, a water instead of alcohol in hand. The familiar voice pulled his attention away from one of the advisors he’d been speaking with, the conversation waning anyway, and he gave Solveig a small smile while nodding his head in thanks. “I didn’t really think it would happen with Maggie again so this feels pretty good.” He was trying hard not to feel awkward in Solveig’s presence and he stepped away from the others to give her his full attention. “I have to admit...it was weird not being able to come running and tell you as soon as it was all settled.”

rebelwithacausesolveig:
“It is not that simple,” she replied harshly under her breath while she kept Ivan in her peripheral. “In this instance pretty good is not good enough. If you want to end up on the front page of the tabloids fine, and I could not care less if I do, but I have spent a lot of time, money, and work keeping Astrid hidden; to give her some sense of normalcy and security. I will not have her found because you were too busy glaring at me to notice him watching you.” Solveig huffed slightly, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. She couldn’t blame him too much, Matthias had been raised very differently from her. When you were a rebel you were used to seeing everyone as an enemy, he hadn’t had to think like that before.
She noticed the slight shift in his demeanor. Solveig hadn’t made the comment to hurt him, and even felt a little bad about it now after the fact. She let him trail off before glancing up to make eye contact. They both know this wasn’t the time or place for the full conversation. “It was not to hurt you,” she replied softly. “I never wanted to hurt you, I just wanted to keep her safe.” It was all she said on the matter, though surely if they got out of here there would be a much longer conversation. “My kind of bonding,” she replied under her breath after a moment. It was a halfhearted attempt at a joke, but she was happy to move past the previous topic. “Blankets first, and water. And if we happen to find the Codeine while looking for them…” Solveig trailed off with a shrug. If they could focus on getting out of here alive maybe it would go by without incident.
He was so conflicted by her words. The fact that she had admitted to spending so much of her energy and her life trying to keep his daughter hidden only made him angrier despite him already knowing she had done so. But the very idea of someone like Ivan finding out about Astrid, of the world finding out she existed and disrupting whatever life she was living, was enough to sober him of that fury. He refused to look at Ivan again. If the Russian was actually watching them turning his head too many times to gage Ivan’s reaction would only tell the man that the two were talking about him. “Fine.” He let it go. This wasn’t the time or place for any of it but this fight was coming. He could feel the tension starting to brew once more and the next time they got into it he wouldn’t be able to hold back. “This isn’t the end of this conversation though. When we get out of here we need to talk.”
He didn’t want to say anything else on the subject but he couldn’t help responding to her words. “I never thought anyone would have to be kept safe from me, much less my own daughter.” He almost smiled when she made the comment under her breath but instead he just threw her a look of exasperation as she spoke of the drugs. Kat was there and he didn’t want to encourage the youngest Meijer into that sort of thing but he honestly couldn’t anyone for wanting them in that situation. “I’ll search over here, let you know if I find anything.” And with that he walked away, one last glance being sent towards Ivan as he went on his search for supplies.
END.

leawxlf:
The debate on whether or not Lea wanted to go to the lake party at the castle was strong. The avalanche had already put her on edge with the chocolate shop nearly being another casualty on the wipeout list as she was just starting to get her life back together. But someone she didn’t want to see, who had just announced his engagement would be there, and the idea of bumping into him seemed to hurt more. Yet, being the town hermit, except when it came to chocolate, was getting old for someone as young as she was, and she deserved some fun too.
With a large box of chocolate in tow, just for those pesky people who were bound to bug her for the one thing she had become really good at, Lea made her way to the lake up on the hill hoping the night would be fun instead of disastrous.
It wasn’t his fault. Or maybe it was. All Matthias knew was one minute he was trying to get away from someone throwing paint at him and the next he was running straight into a certain blonde that he hadn’t seen in ages. The prince had been hoping that he wouldn’t see Lea again, not after their little tryst that ended...on not so great terms. But here he was kneeling next to her and checking the boxes she had brought with her to the party to make sure nothing was ruined. “I’m sorry, I was trying to get away from the paint war before someone covered me in it.” He glanced back at the one who had been chasing him and glared slightly before looking back at Lea, cautiously holding the box out to her. “Are you okay?”

handydandycasper:
Casper was surprised but delighted when the beach party was announced. Solveig had never mentioned in communications about having days where everyone common and royal alike simply mingled and enjoyed themselves. Although according to others it was something that happened semi-regularly. Either way he was looking forward to a day of relaxation.
As usual though he had acted without thinking and as he took a final dive in the game of beach volleyball he had been participating in, he conceded that he probably should’ve waited until after for his dip in the lake, as opposed to just before it. Looking down as the rest of the team congratulated each other he found that he was coated in a thick layer of sand, attempting to brush it from his legs and bare torso. Only the top layer moved though and he looked up to address the closest figure. “Guess it just means it’s time for another swim. Want to join?”
Volleyball was not his sport and that fact was made very clear as he participated in a game on the beach that day. The last shot had been made by someone on the opposite team assisted by Casper and Matthias had tried to get to it in time but ended up falling into the sand himself, laughing when he’d fully processed what had happened. He’d tried at least. Sand covered his stomach and the front of his swim shorts as he walked towards Casper, nodding his head at the other’s question. “I am much better at swimming anyway. That game can be brutal, I don’t think I’ve ever played it before.” He was more of a swimmer, sometimes he enjoyed a good game of footie as well, but volleyball had proven to be his downfall in the world of sports. “Race you into the water?”

katrienmeijer:
Katrien was sitting on the lakeshore, debating whether she wanted to go back in the water or go find one of her friends to drag them into the paint fight. She was still trying to make up her mind when her brother sat down beside her, and she returned his smile.
“It’s okay, Matty. I know you had other things to be worrying about, your kid sister’s birthday shouldn’t be a priority when our country could’ve been on the brink of war,” she shrugged. No use making him feel worse about than he already did, and she didn’t want to sour the mood. “And anyway, whatever’s in that box might make up for it,” she said, raising her eyebrows and gesturing to the gift her brother held.
“I felt like I had to fix it since I caused it, you know? Plus, it’s good practice for when the old man gets put out of his misery. But your birthday should always be priority.” He laughed as she mentioned the box, Matthias holding it out for her to take. It was just a bracelet he had found, something he thought Kat would like and could wear for charitable events for her animal causes as it had a simple shape of a dog in the middle. “It’s nothing much. I will make it up to you more once we’re out of Khatanga. I was thinking a nice vacation for the two of us. Anywhere you want to go. It might be a good time to catch up with each other and let me spoil my little sister a bit.”

There was cause to celebrate. The deal that Matthias and Ivan had worked out for their countries had been accepted by their parents, Matthias having to do a little convincing on his end, and it seemed war had been reduced to just a rumor. But with all of the good news that had come his way he still knew there was one more mistake he had to rectify. Kat’s birthday had snuck up on him, come and gone while all the deals were being handled, and he had felt awful for missing even the dinner that night. Gift in one hand, a drink in the other, Matthias dodged a few people throwing around paint at the lake bash as he searched for his sister. Finding her by the shore, the Dutch prince took a seat next to her and gave her a sheepish smile. “I haven’t been a very good big brother with all of this going on. Well...I haven’t been a good one in a long time really. I’m so sorry I missed your birthday this year.”

lillianaxcarlisle:
She gave him a short smile as she sipped on her coffee. She looked back out the window again as she waited, then turned back and shook her head when he apologized once more. “Thank you for the scone, and it’s alright. I honestly don’t like the chatter, mostly because everything you hear is just that-chatter.” she picked up her scone and took a bite. “Lilliana. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Matthias.”
Just chatter. To him it was so much more than that. It was the possibility of his people being thrust into a war and some losing their lives just because he wanted to be with someone he love. It was the possibility of that person he loved being hurt in the process as well since it would be her old country against her new one. She had already lost so much and now this. “I suppose it’s a little different to me.” The words were quiet as he stared down at the scone in her hand. He shouldn’t let rumors get to him, at least not until he knew the facts, but a lot was on the line. “All chatter holds a little bit of truth usually. Even if it’s not the whole truth. I’d rather my country stay out of a senseless war.”

Thomas frowned sympathetically. He’d never understand the pressures that the crowns faced- doubly so since he was now betrothed to another spare, and in this situation he couldn’t imagine the Dutch prince was having an easy time of things. He accepted the non-verbal invitation, moving to the seat across from the Matthias. “I didn’t realize that you didn’t have any more information than the rest of us,” he admitted. “That must be frustrating.”
“Have you spoken to Ivan about this? It may be easier for him to get information, since we’re in his country. Maybe he knows more,” he suggested, though his tone was far from hopeful. “That’s… about the only idea I have, I’m afraid.”
“It’s not for a lack of trying, really.” He shrugged a shoulder, Matthias wanting Thomas to know he wasn’t just brushing this aside as he assumed some of the royals might be thinking. “Communication to the Netherlands is hard and...” He paused, not sure he should be advertising his father’s lack of participation in all of this as well. “It’s just difficult. I honestly don’t understand why it’s happening and that’s the most frustrating part.”
He nodded at the suggestion while he piled all of his documents together to put them away. Work was definitely done for the night. “We’re meeting in the morning. I’m hoping the same thing because I can’t help until I have at least a little bit of information.” With the papers put away and his frustration at an all time high, the crown looked Thomas in the eye. “Do you want to drink with me instead? I think it’s the time for it.”

margaritaxromanova:
Margarita was twenty eight, and for the first time in her life, she didn’t feel like partying. She didn’t want a ball, she didn’t want a cake, she didn’t want to dance she didn’t want anything- not when so much was still happening. How could she even think about throwing a party? Not to mention, her funds were running low all the while the legalities of her disownment were being worked on. A little bit longer, and she’d actually need a job.
So she found herself in the Lilac, nursing a half empty glass of wine. This was so unlike her, even Maggie had no idea how to act. “You know, I’m dreading the day when I turn thirty.” She spoke to the person nearby, finally picking up her glass. “If this is how I celebrate my twenties, I’ll be in bed by eight in a couple years.”
“I thought the same thing when I went into my late twenties.” Matthias grinned at his fiancé before he took a seat across from her, another glass of wine sat in front of her before he nursed his own bourbon. “And I was pretty much right. We’ll just be that old boring couple who wakes up at five-thirty for the early bird special.” He raised an eyebrow as if to challenge her, wondering if she would protest or if the mood she was in would win out. He knew he had been late but he hoped that wasn’t why she was so down and that his news would bring her out of this funk.
“This is a time to be happy, Maggie. What’s wrong?” Still, he had that smile on his lips knowing that she could use the good news she had coming her way. He lingered though, letting the words marinate on his tongue as he waited for her reply.

crownprincexvalentin:
Val shrugged. Taking the other’s hand, he got up from the floor, not wanting to stay there a moment longer. If he did, he’ll be digging forever, and he wasn’t in the mood to do that. “It’s okay-I think nearly half my clothes were business casual, alongside some pairs of jeans and some boots, for when I go outside and see my goat.” he said, the part about the goat coming out painfully slow.
Shoes. He hadn’t thought about shoes. Matthias looked down at their feet but couldn’t tell if they were the same size or not. “I don’t know if you’ll fit into mine or not but we can try a pair. Have you...checked on the goat?” Not only was he confused by someone having a goat here, he hadn’t even thought of the animals and their safety in all of this. The horse stable was the most likely place for the goat to be and he wasn’t sure if it hadn’t gotten hit or not. Still, he continued through the halls towards his own room which had come close to disaster itself but it had luckily been spared. “The goat is okay, right?”
