Honour Among Fools || Jaime Lannister x Original Character {ao3 link}

Little Rana was half hidden in her father’s cloak, quiet and perceptive as she looked around the room. She would have been Roose’s copy if not for the roundness around her cheeks of her mother. Already a pretty child, hauntingly Ned would say with her icy features; the Greatjon had called her “little Other”. Better than Leech Lord, Ned supposed.

Yet six years later, a rebellion put down and winter’s end between them, Rana had come to Ward for him and Cateyln. As suspected, she was intelligent, dutiful and observant in a way most Lord’s weren’t. If not her breezy demeanour, and a lack of empathy for most things and her coldness towards Jon, she would make a perfect bride to Robb, and a union the North had waited four hundred years for would finally commence. Then the raven came informing them of Lord Domeric’s death. Less than two moons later, Ned watched a woman of eight and ten namedays be declared heir by her father and she swore an oath to him before a weirwood that she would be loyal to her liege and his heir, call the banners when needed, offer council when asked and dispense the King’s Jusifice in the name of House Stark. Ned lost a good daughter and gained a bannerman.

Once betrothed to Robb Stark to be the next Lady of Winterfell, Lady Rana Bolton is made the heir apparent to the Dreadfort after the death of her brother Domeric. However, when King Robert Baratheon visits the North to name Eddard Stark his Hand, far from home, she learns that her father is dead and her bastard half brother has usurped her position.

With the Northern Banners called and the King and his would be hand firmly planted in Winterfell, Rana must prove that her rightful claim to her ancestral seat is worth fighting for under the gaze of those who oppose her. Love, duty, honour and sacrifice are all tested in a war of kin for Westeros’s bloodiest house all the while a lone stag has departed for Dragonstone while mockingbirds, snakes and roses rule Kings Landing.

"Maega Targaryen, named for Maegelle or for Maegor, it is still unknown. The former sworn by her mother Lady Rhea Royce and the latter by her father, the Rogue Prince. Born and raised in the Vale, after her mother's unfortunate demise when she was only four name days she was trained by her Uncle Waymar Royce to hold a sword in the face if her father's impending usurpation of her seat.

Tall, bulky, manly in the face that even Aegon the Conqueror was not, she was far from the epitome of a perfect Targaryen even with purple eyes and silver-gold hair. Instead of gowns she was often seen in armour, carrying around live steel and a great bow. Brought to court on her twelfth nameday, Maega never met her stepmother Laena Velaryon and letters from her father were infrequent. She slotted neither into the Princess's Blacks or the Queen's Greens, dragged between the two women through ill-fitting gowns, awkward family dinners and never agreed upon betrothals.

It is not known if she was involved with the maiming of Prince Aemond with her half-sisters and cousins, but she returned to Dragonstone with her father, and new stepmother Princess Rhaenyra. In the following years, alone and isolated, she was unable to from close relationships with any of her half-sisters and step-brothers. However, in her sixteenth year she mounted the Bronze Fury, the only dragonrider able to rival the One-Eyed Prince.

Her most essential role in the Dance of Dragons was her wedding Dalton Greyjoy, the Red Kraken, just a year shy of death of King Viserys. It is reported she flew her great beast across Westeros before landing on Pyke, slipping from her saddle into one of the many towers. She took one of the Lord's salt sons with the promise of a dragon ride, a move her ancestor Queen Visenya would have been proud of. By the time Lord Greyjoy saw his screaming son a top his dragon, his fate was sealed as the soon to be husband of the Targaryen Lady. She reported told him that "like a salt wife, she would throw him over dragon back, willing or not".

However, as these things often do, the Greyjoy Lord became deeply infatuated and in love with his wife, and if tales are true, this was reciprocated by her with ease. By the time they received the raven informing of Prince Lucerys' death and the call to war, she had already birthed a healthy son, Euron, with his own hatchling, Stormbreak.

hey, I‘m quite curious about Rana and would love to hear a bit more about your plans for her!

hello!! and i'm so glad that people are curious about rana! she's been an oc idea for six years now so i'm so happy to finally share her with everyone!

as for my plans for her, she's going to be part of a long fic 'honour among fools' to be posted soon on here and on ao3! as said in the other post it will be eventually a jaime lannister x oc story which i'm very excited for when we get into the actual meat of them both as characters and why they work so well together!

the book is a full au from got s1ep1 and bran ii in agot, with the big announcement that roose is dead and ramsay usurping her! so big things from the start as roose is already dead and neither ned or robert go back south, so the wo5k will be very different even if stannis has still fled to dragonstone with his info about the lanniscest. so if you like big changes to the main plot with ocs involved, i think you will love this!

for rana herself she's very much mini roose, quiet and apathetic to most things but incredibly intelligent and perceptive. she clashes with characters like ned and robb due to her loose definition of honour, in her words "there's no honour in killing, just killing". however there is more to her that will be discovered though under her hard shell especially her complex relationship with her dead father and the many expectations of being head of a great house, even more so as a woman in the quite misogynistic north.

not to spoil too much though! but her and jaime are of course the main focus of the whole thing, the themes of love, hate, duty, honour and family surrounding them both especially as rana will soon be given a monicker close enough to kingslayer that will connect her and jaime for good.

if you like the themes of "woman in a man's world" of hotd and what would happen to the plot if ned never went south but war still grips the seven kingdoms, stick around!

as a treat, an excerpt from the first chapter

“And it would incentivise others to leave,” The heir spoke, Robb Stark’s red Tully hair a complete different to that of his half brother, “and that does no justice to the men that continue to give their lives to the watch and the protection of us. We honour them by protecting their sacrifice,” 

Rana mused on Robb’s words, adjusting the pins holding her hood in place. Honouring them by mounting the head of their sworn brother on a pike. She didn’t know the name of the deserter but she wondered if his brothers in arms would be happy to see the head of a man cut from its body for their honourable sacrifice. It felt foolish to Rana, there was no honour in killing, just killing.

“It’s the King’s Justice Bran, there is no honour to do with it.” Rana said bluntly, rolling her eyes at the rigid stares of both Stark brothers, blue and grey. They were trying to project the simple reality from their brother that their father was executing a man because it was a moral right and the Gods adorned it so. Her father had never tried to mince words in a way, even as a girl. 

“What she’s trying to -” Robb attempted to interrupt, his cheeks flushed red. 

“I’m telling the truth. None of us are above the law of the King and the King’s law states that we are to execute deserters of the Night’s Watch. There may be good reasons to do it, whether for the sake of the honour of the watch” -she gritted her teeth- “or for Lords to more peacefully manage their land but it’s always at the King's discretion.”

“Father-” 

“She’s not wrong Robb, and as heir you know that,” Lord Stark said,  halting his son’s pleading voice, “but I do think as heir to her own House, Rana should think above doing the honourable thing rather than just as something the law demands.”

anyway!! thank you so much for the interest, it's made my whole day to see people interested in her! and i want to say i love all your ocs as well!! i want to send asks/like/reblog but it's difficult because this is a side account, i need to move to a main soon but tumblr is annoying about that sort of thing

ahh i'm so glad that you want to be added to the tag list for Rana, literally already done! there should be more content coming for her soon as she has the story that has the most work done already (i've had her name and design since 2019, even if the story she will be apart of has long since changed many times since then!). i can't wait for everyone to learn more about her and her story 🤭

House Bolton OC !! (for a Jaime Lannister x OC fic in the works!)

Lady Rana Bolton is the heir to the Dreadfort after the death of her brother Lord Domeric, losing her position as the next Lady of Winterfell. During King Robert’s visit to Winterfell, a loyal servant informs her of the death of her father and her bastard brother’s usurpation. With the North’s banners called and the King no longer heading South but firmly planted in Winterfell, Rana must prove that her claim to her ancestral seat is worth fighting for under the gaze of those that think her incapable. She will take back her seat, honour be damned.
