when modern marie announced at their spring 1980 fashion they wanted to make music, no one believed them. by then they'd been a staple in the fashion world for almost three decades. no one could imagine a company characterized by the hyper romantic era of fairy tales and charming epics trying to pave a path in the cut throat world of music and entertainment. back then, they weren't called modern marie and the lilac shade of the modernist hadn’t tinged their world. ( but when it comes to modern marie everything they are now isn't what they were before. ) all fans and nonfans alike could see of the modern marie they knew was a poor child who was biting off more than they could chew.

but modern marie was hellbent on proving their detractors wrong and they set their sets on the world they were being denied access to. at the time, publications and prominent figures of the fashion industry didn’t agree with this shift in career trajectory. rolling stone thought the company “a child who wanted too much” vogue’s chief editor criticized the company for “giving up on the industry that made it”. model ( ─── ) who had aided in pushing modern marie to younger audiences said at her last show with the company “they think they can do anything and everything … egotistical and greedy … they have no … sometimes it's scary how badly they want to eat the whole wide world.”

and romance, strangely exiled: “that monster is insatiable. it should never have been let out of its cage.”

but plain jane, who works as freelance journalist in new york, thought otherwise: they're scared. and maybe they were. modern marie has the money to throw at as many artists as they want. they've got the time too. they built time.

sooooo what does a company like modern marie do? well, they drop fliers over every major city in the world asking boys: do you want to break the egg? then two years later they do it again asking girls: ( ─── ).

the year is 2006 and modern marie just signed its first and only out of house staff, romance. romance spent years as a creative director for dior before something convinced them to step down from the role and head to south korea. it was said they went from door to door of every company they could find, simply looked at the ceos and then left. when modern marie and romance officially meet, it must be something like love at first. they're the same — hungry for something their contemporaries and the audience can't understand.

it's just music. except when it isn't.

after the first batch of flyers came the auditions then eggtart — a trainee project featuring boys from all over the globe. promoted as both a survival and a reality show, episodes of eggtart can't be found anywhere. whoever got to decide the lineup, see the evaluations, meet the boys, watch them — wasn't the same as the fans who would eventually support the debuted lineup. what those fans got, instead, was tangerine — an otome game where “you decide the fate of the world”.

tangerine released a year before the first string of disappearances. okay, okay, it was a bit of a lie to say there'd never been clips of eggtart. officially, there are three videos that exist from that time period ( said to have run from the late 90’s into the mid 2010’s ). the first generation was largely absent from the game with only the single clip of their stage performance as evidence they existed.

for some time, the generational breakdown of eggtart was how fans divided the larger breakdown of kpop’s generations. generations were revealed via tangerine’s meetable player roster. it only got chalked up to a disappearance when prominent actress ( ─── )’ phone calls were leaked after her death. in them, she was hysterical, demanding him to tell her where her son was and “why was he ever picked for that project? you promised it would be someone else!”

the stage performance of the first generation also called to question whether eggtart was rightfully debuted or a trainee project. considering the groups modern marie has now, it's been assumed eggtart was a trainee project that allowed its members to promote openly and freely, attend award shows, host fanmeets, and operate as if they were debuted.

tangerine was completely free, available for any console, and even playable at pop up shops in tokyo, seoul, and new york. players played the role of the girl — a rotational main character that was casted through the second batch of flyers. twt user ( ─── ) theorized that eggtart was the building block for a girl group made up of the mcs we know in the game. their evidence was primarily the dialogue which hinted the boys were trying to wake the girl up. she seemed to be hyper aware she was being controlled by you—the player. her life wasn’t her own. she needed to destroy the world—beat the game—to wake up.

there were eleven boys in a generation, representing an hour on the clock. the final hour was either the girl or the final group itself which only curred during daytime hence the emphasis on breakfast themes and “waking up”.

though twt user twt user ( ─── )'s theory is popular not everyone agreed with this analysis of the game and it's not the only theory to gain traction over the years:

“yh i agree eggtart is the building block of another world so to speak but i dont think the girls were ever being set up to debut as a girl group. the first gen mc is still a playable character but all her boys are locked. so, how could she wake up if she’s completely out of time?”

“it’s always been about the boys and breaking the egg and destroying the world blah blah. the girl’s posters said — i think that’s evidence enough modern marie always wanted bg plus the girls would have featured in stages not just as “love interests” in the mv.”

“its not about the boys or the girls. it’s about marie’s world and ours.”

tangerine went on to do relatively well. the game was updated each generation to keep plots and characters new and interesting. the only complaint was the progress from previous generations weren’t saved after a new update with the installment of a new generation.

remember: there are three videos that exist from modern marie’s eggtart. the first belongs to the first generation prior to their disappearance from the project. the second and third were shared one after the other.

the soundtrack for the game was composed of what was assumed to be songs the members were performing at evaluations or the survival show half of their project. for as long as eggtart had been running, fans couldn’t see the performance themselves until a video was leaked to youtube titled “eggtart’s third generation special performance.”

it was bad. really bad and everyone thought so. it went viral overnight shared by modern marie’s detractors as a “see??? we all knew you couldn’t do it!” but the virality of that video didn’t last long. the next day rabbit, as we know him now, uploaded a secondary video to youtube. and that performance—yeah that performance was completely different from what was first shown. maybe the initial video was just a practice run. maybe modern marie was just having a little laugh. whatever the reason, fans grew obsessed with the performers of the video and they wanted to know everything about the theorized first real trainees of eggtart outside the game.

the obsession did get out of hand. random boys were stalked and to this day there are videos of dieheard fans swearing they’d found the guys in the video. eventually the obsession led to uncovering ( ─── )’s youtube video, “the place i didn’t return from” which documented his time in eggtart. most of it is largely nonsensical. he rambles about prophecies of second worlds, eyes on the walls, a voice hidden in the static of the radio—after all that, finally he says: “it’s not really a secret that romance had favorites. everyone knew it. all of the guys did. romance used to swear up and down her boys were different from the ones modern favored. whenever she’d argue with prince he’d go on and on about how he liked real artists and wanted real artists for his project. his “artists” were just staff. they made most of the music for the project and even created our choreo but we weren’t allowed to talk to them. romance always made it very clear there’s a difference between their romantics and marie’s modernists.”

romance’s obsession with real artists isn’t some new fact. his last interview he said: “i like artists. the real snobby types. they’re good at what they do, so good they don’t even bother to hide it. you know it. everyone knows it and they’re hated for it. loved for it. i’m not into these so called idols. they’re not hungry for it the way the real artists are. those guys would rather die than be mediocre.”

it is weird the guy who helped build a now infamous idol project for an also sort of popular idol company has such a nasty attitude towards idols. to be fair, it wasn’t really idols he had issues with. it was more of a result of, alleged, inside fighting between him and modern marie. it’s even because of romance the entire idol vs artist debate ever gained traction.

the identities of romance’s favorites—the dancers in the video and the production team behind eggtart—aren’t new faces. you've seen them before. yes. yes, you have. romance wasn’t kidding when he said he only wanted real artists. eggtart’s then staff team had sat in the media’s eyelines for years.

eggtart was never big in the public the way some idol projects tend to be. it became some sort of urban legend, but the debut of romance’s favorites in 2018 seemed to confirm to fans of eggtart it was finished. tangerine had its final update that year, as well. fans didn’t tune in to the final update believing there wasn’t more to the story. they thought mock orange would debut as some brand new group and modern marie would keep doing what it did best. until 2020, when the members disappeared and, once again, a prominent actress dies. her voicemail goes viral and !

well, no.

she didn’t say what we all thought—maybe hoped she’d say to better link eggtart, tangerine, romance, modern marie, and mock orange. to finally get an answer as to why modern marie hid eggtart, why romance is dead, why hide his favorites, why leave fashion, why make up a story where we can decide the fate of the world except its not really us its a girl that needs to wake up, why pick boys the whole world is watching? why hide them? why are there no more oranges in the world?

she didn’t ask, “where is my son? why did you put him in that project?”

she should have.

hi everyone!! im one of the admins for eggtheory and wanted to clarify a few things ooc ig you can say LOL 💖 if you're interested in understanding the decisions we made in this reupload you can check out this doc here. we didn't include any mentions of the staff team, morningbrew, because we're not really certain how many of them are tied to eggtart and how many is just like a guy lol. yes, odyssey, renaissance and harang were apart of the first generation but we don't know for how long. the discord won't be open to any new members considering how frequently mock orange pops in. we want to keep it a space for them to talk freely and some of you are just too immature to handle it. if you have questions for the boys or suggestions you can send them via tellonym and we will get it to them. we publish their interviews on the yearly literary zine, marchen. if you're interested in more lore heavy stuff for mock orange we recommend perusing that site as morningbrew upload to it ever so often. lastly, we don't have a fandom name yet and probably won't anytime soon. alot of people have started to call themselves eggtart as a reference to a lore theory proposed by friend deernie! we also likes to use eggtart for the fandom n mock orange haven't complained about it so we think it's fine 💖 obviously we'll use the necessary context when discussing the trainee project but with the project basically dead and done i don't think that's going to be an issue LOL

iiiiidk where the mcs are and honestly i urge you guys to not look for them. if they wanted to be found they would be. some of my friends think they may be trainees but me personally i just think they got a bag and dipped LMAO but !!!!!! one mc we have tabs on is vivienne yoo! hiraeth’s creative director!!!! its alleged she was one of romance’s favorites too which, given everything she’s done for the angels, i’m not surprised !!

oh!!! for anyone that cares this is the original introduction that person had up: speaking of, times really ... weird at modern marie. always has been the past is this big shape of half formed truths, rumors, speculation—nothing is really solid till we hit the 20’s. even then it feels like knowing things about the company is near impossible. i had all these questions and no one—not a single person—could answer them. how does a company like modern marie, with all its affluence and its history, not exist? so, i thought might as well figure that out myself. i have plans of making a three parter breaking open the story vs the truth of modern marie and how they shape each other for better and for worse.
