maura harman was born in new york city and that’s where she remained until around a month ago. she had a happy childhood and her family was fairly normal. maura met her childhood sweetheart, david when she was just fifteen years old and the pair fell in love instantly. the couple’s relationship was like any other at their age, they had their arguments and their fights but nothing would prepare maura for what was to come in later years.

at eighteen, the couple were married and everything seemed perfect. no one believed that they would stay together but they were defying the odds. the first few years were very happy but then it all started to go wrong. the first time that david hit her, maura couldn’t believe it, she didn’t believe that he could be like that, he’d been so lovely for their entire relationship. he apologised many times and maura assumed that it had been a one off but it was just the beginning of almost twenty years of hell.

they began to argue constantly and david didn’t hit her again for many years so maura didn’t see how wrong the relationship was. the next time he did hit her was her thirtieth birthday and she had been out drinking with her friends when david asked her to come home. when she got home drunk, he beat her senseless and left her bleeding on the living room floor. maura was horrified, she couldn’t believe this was happening to her. over the next several years, she received almost daily beatings from david but still just couldn’t bring herself to leave. at thirty four, maura found out that she was pregnant and this stopped david hurting her for a little while, but not long after she gave birth to her daughter grace, the beatings resumed.

now, the last straw for maura was her daughter witnessing the violence at just four years old, maura decided in that moment to leave. she packed a bag for her and grace in the middle of the night and left without a word to david, she is now living in lakeview where she feels that she will be safe from david, he calls and texts her threateningly daily but she ignores him. maura has been too scared at this point to tell anyone and hopes that her secret stays a secret for as long as she stays in lakeview.

buying the grocery store in lakeview was a step in the right direction for maura getting her life back on track, she vows every day to make a good life for her daughter.
