shortly after maya had ordered her food, she sat down at the last available table at smithie’s. (the table also happened to be right next to a fellow squad member.) he looked as if he had been in the middle of studying, so she didn’t want to bother him. but before she knew it, he spoke to her first. “you don’t want to go to vegas?” maya asked him in response, failing to hide her puzzled expression. “i mean... i don’t think it’s mandatory, but why wouldn’t you want to go?”

a road trip.   with people he barely even talks to.   at least he still had a few days to prepare himself for that !   with his textbook right in front of him,   theo happily tore his eyes away from the medical terminology,   gaze now shifting to the patrons inside of smithies before recognizing another member.   dare he speak up ?   ❛   hey.   ❜   he started,   leaning slightly in his seat towards them.   ❛   think i can make an escape plan for spring break ?   ❜   aw,   poor little rich kid doesn’t wanna go on a trip to vegas ?   shutup.

             cruz and studying did not get along ––– that was a well known fact. however , he still tried. his eyes were glued on his math book , mumbling to himself about how much he hated math. he hadn’t quite been talking to maya , but since they were studying together , it was easy to seem like him cursing out the letter x was definitely spoken to her. “ oh , nothing. i was just complaining , i wasn’t exactly ––– talking. i didn’t mean to bother your studying. sorry , maya. ” he smiles softly , eyes peaking at the book she’s reading. “ maybe you should take a little break , though ? ”

“don’t worry, you definitely didn’t bother me. you did me a favor if anything,” maya started. “you got me to finally take my eyes off of this book... i didn’t even realize how exhausted i was,” she told cruz as she yawned. it was true that she should take a break, but at the same time, she knew that if she took a break, she’d end up not studying for the rest of the night. although it was probably for the better. “‘maybe you’re right. you should take a break too, though. you seem stressed,” maya said to him with a sympathetic look. “what are you studying for again?”

                cove had been sat close by for practically hours at this point , studying for her own upcoming biology exam , a subject that she usually enjoyed but how enjoyable could it be under the pressure to pass with an acceptable grade ? “ i was just saying that i’m thinking about calling it quits for the day , the sound of my stomach growling is starting to make it impossible to focus. ” she laughs , biting at the inside of her cheek. “ wanna come ? ”

maya glanced down at her books, and then back up at cove. she knew that this test was really important when it came to her final grade, but at the same time, she couldn’t retain any information on an empty stomach, right? “okay, i guess a quick break to eat won’t hurt,” she replied with a smile after contemplating it for a few moments. “where do you wanna go?” maya asked cove as she put her books back into her bag.

after maya’s last class had finally ended, she decided to take a breather and sit on the steps closest to her classroom, because why not? the weather was nice, and she just liked to be around other people. as she was mindlessly scrolling on her phone, she noticed a tall shadow appearing as footsteps drew nearer. after locking eyes with finley, maya smiled. “you wanna take a photo of me?” she questioned him. shortly after she spoke, she realized she had probably sounded rude, when in reality, she was just flattered that he had even asked her. “no, no, i would totally love it if you did! the lighting is nice here! sorry, i was just caught off guard. not many people take photos of me, ya know?”

            lanky legs carry him through the commons , heading towards the steps after his last class finished. the sun was shining , and he’s not sure what it is about the light shining against the stairs that makes the sight so pretty. feet pause , watching as a lexsquad member settles against the steps. despite his typical shy nature , he was moderately comfortable with most of the lexsquad , so he approaches with a soft clearing of his throat. “ i know this is going to sound weird , but can i take a picture of you ? well , i mean ––– it’s going to be so i can paint you later , so i actually guess i should ask if it’s okay if i paint you ? i … realize how creepy that sounds , actually , so you know what , never mind. forget i spoke. ” an incredibly smooth delivery –– nailed it. “ sorry. ”

maya had been studying for her sociology midterm for basically the entire day, so as one might expect, she was exhausted. sociology was a subject that she excelled at, yet she was still extremely stressed by the test. “what if i fail?” maya pondered to herself. her thoughts were going a million miles per hour; she didn’t even realize the person closest to her had been speaking. “shoot, what did you say?” she asked with a sympathetic look. “i’m sorry, my brain is just totally fried right now.” maya apologized as she shook her head at herself.

CRUZ : good morning , i have a question. CRUZ : is water wet ?  CRUZ : i’ve been thinking about it all morning

maya tried to shush kade without being verbal, but it was clear that he didn’t get the message. “dude, we’re in the library,” she whispered as she glanced around, hoping no one was paying any attention to them. when kade mentioned morse code, she couldn’t help but make a face at him. “morse code?” maya started, forgetting to whisper at that point. “you... can’t talk in--- what do you think morse code is?”

HE’S NOT EXACTLY THE BRIGHTEST BULB – and kade is far from the quietest person, either. the other is trying to whisper to him and keep their voice low, but kade can’t seem to follow. “ are you trying to talk to me in morse code ? ”

                he wasn’t one to hold grudges , though he did get bothered a bit easily , he also forgave easily. it depended on the situation of course , but in this case , there was no reason for him to stay mad at maya. she was a sweet girl , and she didn’t like that he was being sneaky. he wanted to fill her in –– though he wasn’t sure why. they weren’t close , but he felt like he could trust her. then again , considering she hated lying , maybe he shouldn’t. he wasn’t sure , but all he knew was that he wanted to make sure him and maya were okay. he always felt like she was scared of him , or something , and he hated that.

“ yeah , definitely. i just felt bad for being mean to you. you didn’t deserve that. ” he still felt like it was true , despite her telling him it was okay. “ things are okay. i’m only gonna go into detail if you want me to because you said you didn’t –– i have a bad memory , but you said , ya know. what you said. ” smooth , cruz. why was he so nervous around her ? it was just maya ! “ avery and i got into a pretty bad fight , but things are okay now. they’re getting better. other stuff , too , but i won’t go on about you , ya know ? ” he smiles softly , pausing only to order food and a drink. “ on me , whatever you want. ” he tells her , smiling softly. “ anyway. how are you ? i haven’t talked to you since smithies the other night. ”

maya looked at him with a slight frown. “i shouldn’t have been rude to you either. you and i both just had bad days, that’s all,” she said to cruz in a soothing tone of voice. she truly wasn’t upset at him anymore, and she did her absolute best to let him know that. she felt bad that one of the first times the two genuinely spoke to one another was during an argument. an argument in a group chat no less. as cruz spoke to her, she could tell he was fairly anxious. honestly, she probably felt even more anxious than he did. but despite that, to make him feel better, she tried playing it cool. “yeah... i mean, you can tell me whatever you feel comfortable telling me. don’t feel like you have to, though!” maya spoke.

once cruz had mentioned avery, she tried her best to hide her confusion. “you guys got into a fight? is that why he was so upset the other day?” maya asked him, attempting to act nonchalant. her curiosity got the best of her. “what happened? i mean... you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, of course,” as cruz ordered the food, she figured she wouldn’t protest him paying the bill, because she knew he would just insist. she’d just venmo him later. “thanks, cruz,” she responded with a sweet grin. “oh, that night at smithies was so fun! i actually got drunk for the first time in a long time, and i did stuff i normally would never do.” maya told him excitedly.

maya was a bit stressed out about her meeting with avery. she knew that the two had to talk; she was just afraid of any potential confrontation that could occur. she doubted anything along those lines would happen though, but based on the texts avery had sent her earlier that day, she had reason to believe otherwise. maya was aware of the most of the cruz and avery situation, however, she decided to wait for avery to tell her himself. “hey,” she said sheepishly as she walked up to the table before her. “i’m fine... how are you?”

by now, avery was well aware of what he had done and the implications of his actions. maybe he couldn’t fix it but he’d at least try. he was thankful that maya was willing to meet with him but that didn’t make him any less nervous. he was sure she already knew what happened between him and cruz but he thought it would be best to hear it from him. not to mention he was a total dick to her in the groupchat. avery was sitting at a table just inside of smithie’s as he waited for maya. once he saw her come through the door, he gave her a small and awkward wave. “hey, how are you?” / @mayavoss​

ONE OF TWO ROOMMATES, momo was thankful to have maya around. she loved sierra, but maya always managed to balance her out. “ i always have shit in mind, ” the blonde clarifies, before shrugging. “ i should be cleaning my room. or studying. but both sound so tragically boring, so maybe.. lex cafe ?? i’m aware i have coffee, but.. i could go for something to eat, for sure. ”

“yes, you should be cleaning your room and studying,” maya replied, shaking her head. “but i will admit... i’m kind of hungry too,” she said as she paced around to think. “okay, we can go eat, but when we get back i’ll help you do what you should’ve already done,” she said with a laugh. “i swear, you and sierra are the reason i have no money,” maya joked. it was true that she didn’t have much spare cash at that moment, but she didn’t mind. she loved spending time with her friends, even though they always insisted on going out to eat. maya didn’t complain, though. the lex cafe was where many of her best memories from lexington took place. “let’s go!” she exclaimed to momo.

as maya stood at the entrance of smithie’s, she mentally prepared herself for what was to come. she and cruz had already apologized to each other, but that still didn’t make her feel any less guilty of her behavior from the night prior. the two of them made up through text messages, which while still reassuring, wasn’t always reliable. “what if he’s actually still mad at me?” maya asked herself silently. she let out a big sigh, annoyed at herself for letting her anxiety-driven thoughts corrupt her. almost immediately as she opened the door, she spotted cruz siting at a table with his back facing the entrance. she quietly made her way to the table, trying not to startle him. when the two made eye contact, she smiled warmly at him.

 “hey, cruz,” she greeted him. after he apologized for the night before, maya had almost interrupted him to say, “it’s okay, you don’t need to be sorry! we’re human beings, ya know? and human beings sometimes argue. so no worries, okay?” maya said as she put her hand on his shoulder, reiterating that everything that happened was in the past and that she was no longer angry. she then sat across from him, feeling somewhat awkward. “so, how are things?” maya asked him to break the ice. although what she really wanted to ask was, “what do you want to talk about exactly?” she had a feeling there was something specific he had in mind when he invited her out.

             cruz felt bad for getting into it with maya. genuinely , he didn’t mean to get upset with her , he had just been high strung lately , and with everything going on the last thing that he wanted was what went on in the group chat. after talking to maya privately , he felt better about that , at least , but still wanted to meet her to talk , even if they didn’t talk about anything that important. that said , he’s waiting at smithies and he’s early –– eyes looking down at his phone to pass the time until someone approaches his table. eye shoot up , a smile growing on his face when he sees her. “ hi , maya. thanks for coming. ” he greets her , mildly anxious hands wringing together under the table. “ i’m sorry about last night. ” @mayavoss​
