How is Chen handling the heat?

Well, she is a cat, so she has a higher body temperature than most, so it doesn't feel AS hot to her, but even so...

Random AU idea

So, I’m not usually one to think up random AU ideas, but an idea popped into my mind: Yakumo Mechanics.

Yukari Yakumo is an o-… Erm, mature and experienced mechanic, who eventually met a younger engineer, Ran, and hired her, eventually falling in love and starting a relationship with her.

Years later, a young teen showed up, hanging around the garage, and watching them work. But the teen always ran off when caught, but one time, they managed to corner her, and she revealed that she had an interest in mechanics. While Yukari didn’t want anything to do with it, initially, Ran decided to take Chen under her wing as an apprentice. Every day after school, and sometimes on the weekends, Chen heads on over to watch Ran work. Yukari simply tolerated her… Until she found out that Chen had a mind geared (ha) towards mechanics, as well as nimble fingers and keen eyes. Eventually, with encouragement, the two were letting Chen actively help, telling her what to do, and rarely needing to explain it to her more than once.

I mean, just imagine a group photo, Yukari and Ran in coveralls/overalls, maybe just looking a little grubby, smiling fondly, while Chen is in her school uniform, tie undone, oil and grease all over her face and clothes, smiling broadly, holding a busted piece of an engine that she had just removed.

Modern!Chen bio!

Name: Chen Mineko

Age: 17

Birthday: September 13th

Height: 5' (152cm)

Weight: 110lbs (50kg)

Gender: Female

Occupation: High School Junior/Budding Mechanic

Appearance: Messy, mid-length brown hair, honey brown eyes, pink cheeks, pale skin, a fairly slim but toned body.

Clothing: For school, she wears the uniform, but opts for pants rather than the skirt. The faculty have tried suggesting that she wear the skirt instead, but can't really do anything because it IS still the uniform. She also comes to school and leaves wearing a old leather jacket, given to her by the mechanic Yukari Yakumo. It is still in fairly good condition despite it having a few patches.

When it comes to casual clothing, she'll usually go for comfort over style, option for t-shirts and overalls.

When she's at the mechanic doing her job, she will generally just wear coveralls, although she will sometimes unzip it and tie the sleeves around her middle if she's hot, generally only wearing a tank-top and shorts underneath. Being a mechanic can be hot sweaty work y'know!

All of these looks usually come with a fair few banadges on her fingers. Sometimes there are spots of grease or oil on her hands, but she is generally good about washing her hands.

Personality: At school, Chen used to be shy and withdrawn, but lately, around the time she started getting into mechanics, she started becoming more and more confident, although she is a little standoffish and not exactly social, but without being unfriendly. She does have a kind heart though, she will offer an ear to someone if they have problems, and she is usually pretty good at picking up on moods. But generally social interactions are on her terms... almost like a cat.

Skills: Chen is not the top of the class, but that is more down to the subjects not really interesting her too much. She is bright and still manages to get Bs for most of her grades, and even the odd A here and there, but it's pretty clear when she feels stressed or unhappy because her grades will drop to Cs and Ds.

She also has a natural skill for mechanic work, her mind seeming to be geared towards how machines like cars work, surprising both Ran and Yukari with how quickly she picked up concepts. She's also gained a fair bit of muscle around her core and her arms due to her mechanic work, from using a lot of elbow grease with some of the tougher cars.

She also knows how computers work, knowing how to make programs work even if she doesn't completely understand them. She says it's mostly luck though.

Likes: Chen tends to enjoy mechanic work, finding it fascinating how machines like cars are put together, how they work, and how to fix them when something goes wrong. Outside of machines, she does like fast food and take-outs, has some interest in video games and is developing an interest in Vtubing, even considering getting some of the gear together and giving it a go herself.

Dislikes: Chen dislikes school work for the most part. She does have a few lessons she likes, but does have too much patience with other subjects, especially now, in high school, they're getting more difficult.

She also dislikes being told that she cannot do something, like when her parents, early on, tried to forbid her from hanging out around the Yakumo mechanics, mainly because they did not know them, but eventually they realised that it would be easier and would stop Chen trying to sneak out if they just met the mechanics themselves and talked things out a little.

Chen also has some skill in archery and fencing, although she doesn't really have too much interest in joining a club for those activities.

Strengths: Chen's mind is geared towards machines and how they work, and she seems to be a natural with computers and basic programming as well, seeming to have a natural understanding of the basic rules of them. When she was asked how she knew, she said that it just seemed to make sense to her and that she got lucky.

Weaknesses: Chen can be impatient, even with important things, which can occasionally lead to slapdash schoolwork, although she usually does manage to scrape by with decent grades. She also dislikes feeling restricted, even if she does agree with the idea that restrictions breed creativity in quite a few cases. She doesn't mind it as much in mechanic work, if she's told not to use a specific tool for a car, she will adapt.

Kinda thinking about finally bringing out Modern!Chen...

But the problem is that the only reason I kinda wanna do that is to interact with someone because a storyline they're doing is... intriguing to me and I think Modern!Chen might be able to help...

...But I also don't wanna interfere with whatever they have planned for that storyline. x.x

"... I don't wanna say." She has no regrets or shame about what she's done, but she doesn't want Byakuren to hear about it and end up judging her.

Although there was a chance that Byakuren would approve, or at least wouldn't be too disappointed, considering the people she had killed were animal abusers, but still...

"Lying isn't good, Chen. What did you do?" She asked without hesitation. Not a good actor indeed...

Chen gave a shriek like a scalded cat and jumped several feet into the air.

"Uh, no, I'm a good girl, and I always behave!" Chen, you might be better behaved than most youkai... but you're not a good actor.

"Oh? Have you done something wrong, Chen?" There she is already-

"...Now I'm thinking about whether I've done anything bad enough to get a sermon or a lecture from Byakuren..."

"...No, actually the question would be, if she knows about any of the things I've done that are bad enough to get a sermon or a lecture..."

"...To be fair, I don't know if Byakuren's ever tried to give me a sermon or not..."

"...I usually just end up falling asleep on her lap, though, so maybe her sermons just send me to sleep...? Can't say if she tries to give me a sermon while I sleep or not..."

"Ran-sama has been pretty set against me having a laptop in the past, restricting me to only using a phone or using a PC so she can keep an eye on what I look at, but I think Yukari-sama might have talked her into getting me one..."

"Mainly because the thing I've used it the most for is looking up stuff for Yukari-sama..."

"... Wait, Yukari-sama is supposed to be smarter than Ran-sama, why does she need me to look up stuff-"
