"He was very gentlemanly and accommodating, and quite well-spoken," [Jim] McCarty has said. "Very easy to get on with, very businesslike." "He was very sweet and wanted to please," agrees [Chris] Dreja. "He'd do anything for you until his ego got in the way."

The Yardbirds had all known Page as a session regular and blues devotee and had seen him casually for years. "I used to meet him outside, of all places, a tropical fish store in Tolworth," Dreja looked back. "Jimmy was a tropical fish enthusiast and he'd say something like, 'Hello, Chris, I've just bought a nice thermometer for my fish.' He was a strange guy, even then."

McCarty had met him when Eric Clapton was on lead guitar: "He came to a gig when Eric was still in the band and he was with Jackie DeShannon. He looked pretty cool, a bit of a rock star." Now that he was an official band member—booked for what would be his first public gigs since 1963—Page was ready to dress the part. "He made a point of getting the right sort of clothes, getting these old military jackets, McCarty has noted.
