Does anyone else ever think maybe Jake Lockley has existed longer than Steven?

I’m not an expert in DID, but they’re about 8 when Randall dies, and to my knowledge while it’s possible for DID to form at that age, I think it’s much more common for it to happen earlier

If we look at the family, it does seem unlikely to me that the abuse started after Randall’s death. It’s extreme abuse, emotional and physical, and I feel like someone who was willing to do that to a child after the death of another one probably wasn’t a good parent to begin with. The way she talks about them is different too, Randall gets a nickname, Ro-Ro, and her expectation of Marc is that he looks after his brother.

There’s neglect there already, clearly — an 8 year old shouldn’t be trusted to look after a child. I don’t find it far-fetched to assume the abuse actually started before then.

What if they had a second child because they realised very early on that the way they’d treated their first son had caused irreversible damage? What if the DID formed very early on and the reason we don’t see any abuse before Randall’s death is because that early abuse is in Jake’s memories, not in Marc’s?

And Marc had to be unaware of that early abuse because Marc holds a lot of guilt. And Marc needed to be able to make sense of what happened to him, because humans need to make sense of everything. For Marc to survive, there had to be reason for his experiences. If Marc knew that the abuse started before Randall’s death, he would no longer be able to convince himself that he deserved it. He’d have to face the fact that there was no reason for it and it shouldn’t have happened, and that would be too difficult, because his entire sense of self is based on being a killer and being unloveable. And his evidence is flimsy as it is, because Randall’s death isn’t his fault, but at least it was something to latch onto.

Jake exists so that Marc can feel like it happened for a reason. And at first, that wouldn’t have been his original ‘purpose’, originally it would’ve been so that Marc could have the happy childhood. But when Randall died, it shifted. Steven had to have the happy childhood, Marc had to hold their guilt, and Jake had to protect both of their worldviews, as wrong as he knows them to be.
