McHarg’s Students
I’ve been plugging away at a list of the students from Scotland that followed McHarg here to Philadelphia, it grows everyday. The light in Philadelphia is magical at this time of year. I can see why so many Scots loved their time here at the University of Pennsylvania. Here’s where I am up to so far (by order of UPenn graduating year)…
David Skinner (1928-1989)
Michael B Brown (1922-1997)
James Shepheard Morris (1931-2006)
Robert Russell Steedman (1929-)
Michael Hough (1929-2013)
Wendy Powell (nd)
Michael M Laurie (1932-2002)
Douglas Sampson (1936- 2011)
Ian Tyndall (1937)
David George Hamilton Waugh (1939-2015)
Mark Turnbull (1943-2016)
Iain McNaughton Robertson (nd)
Alistair McIntosh (nd)

Philadelphia
I’ve landed in a very cold Philadelphia and have spent the week tucked away in the warm archives of the University of Pennsylvania. So far I’ve focused on reading through McHarg’s correspondence with UPenn alumni and contacts back in Scotland. What has struck me the most reading through the letters is the sheer strength of motivation McHarg had to push forward on so many different projects throughout his career. He did this while supporting and encouraging others to go on and achieve their best.
Over the next few weeks I’ll post up the most interesting of my finds in the archives here at UPenn.
