Dear universe and beyond, I am extra, EXTRA thrilled that the Dolby Atmos version of my piece "Envelopes" is now available on compatible streaming services (Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal)! OMG, this is the way this piece sounded IN MY HEAD from conception, so getting to mix it in a 3-dimensional space is a true life's gift for me. I remixed the stereo version as well which should be live shortly. Both versions are a wee bit different from the original in the end section where I filtered the Rhodes piano out of the way of the horns a bit. This section is the "Reconstruction" where a long relationship has made it through being exploded to bits, into a deep reckoning, and put back together. It is now familiar but different, stronger, wiser, more complex...the human experience, y'all. I want it to feel beautiful and hopeful. If you have an iPhone, you can enable Dolby Atmos in Settings/Music and hear a headphone version that has added space and vibe. Android users can hear a binaural version as well. The standard stereo release seems to be pending for a little longer in the streaming queue, but I am too excited not to share this one. If you have a soundbar with Dolby Atmos, or even a home theater 5.1 system, queue it up! If you have an Atmos studio setup, this one will run the gamut of the 3d space. Very excited. It was a super rad nerd out studio day today. Martins and his crew, the makers of Sonarworks speaker calibration software were in my studio measuring the room and demoing their new immersive audio version of the app for Poppy Crum, former Dolby senior scientist. She was offering her highly-experienced, super brain thoughts on some refinements. They asked me my opinion on several things as well, but nothing about latte art. I’m playing and recording drums today for two songs for an artist in Spain. This is the first big physical activity since Covid took my energy. Drumming’s got my heart beating extra fo sho! I’m really enjoying it. It’s exciting to track my 90’s Slingerland copper snare since I put 42 strand wires on it. These new snare wires really made this snare sound incredible! I feel it will be my go-to snare much of the time. This is the snare drum shell that I was doing the oxidation treatment on last year. I’ve done all kinds of mods on this thing and it sounds really great. I added a detented Inde Drums throw-off switch and butt plate to replace the wonky Slingerland one. I also installed a Zikit, which is fun for some things. The Zikit instantly changes the drum from a 14” to a 12” in pitch/tone or a 10” one with the flip of the switch. It can be useful. I stayed out of the studio this Saturday morning for once and used this beautiful day for some yard refurb. I relaid some sand for my pavers and added new brown mulch. The phantom image that Amphions create in general is just bananas. It is so clear. What’s amazing is how precise it STILL is in 7.1.4 Atmos music mixing (immersive audio)! I can put a violin part right where that lamp is in between the front right and right side surround speakers and you’d swear they are standing there playing the violin. Close your eyes and it’d be hard to say otherwise! Man! I love that. Really great. It’s the same all around the room. They’ve got the waveguide design DIALED. I’ve been appreciating that for years, but the fact that it still lands that precise in Atmos is something I am really grateful for. Also, I did not get paid to say this haha!
