The Dairy - November 2016
The Dairy – November 2016
Tumblr media
November marked the anniversary of the start of this project.  We began the demolition of the old barn in the first week of November, 2015.  Just over a year later, we are getting close to having a house to live in. The last update here was the end of July, as the first roof tiles were going on.  Over August, we carried up over 10,000 tiles onto the roof.  With a few hundred metres of battening…

The Dairy - to the end of July 2016
The Dairy – to the end of July 2016
Tumblr media
We had a couple of weeks off at the beginning of June, a welcome break from the building routine. We returned to concentrate on the main barn; the remaining blockwork was completed up to the wall plate, and slots were cut to take the old trusses which will sit over the main living space. We heaved up the trusses with wind-up lifts; we’re planning to get them sandblasted back to clean wood, and…

The Dairy - to the end of May 2016
The Dairy – to the end of May 2016
Tumblr media
The month was taken up with getting the roof on the extension.  This will, ultimately, have a metal covering, but the aim for now was to get the roof structure in place and a plywood covering, so that the interior will be more or less dry, even if we have to wait a few months for the final layer. We bolted a series of posts to the steel joists, and then hoisted two massive 9 metre long steel…

The Dairy - to the end of April 2016
The Dairy – to the end of April 2016
Tumblr media
The first half of the month was dominated by the big move out of the old farmhouse and into our glamorous caravan.  I’ve managed to supplement this rather limited living space with a big shed (freezer, laundry, larder) and a huge (25 foot) big red lorry back, which now contains most of our worldly goods.(Thanks to Joel and Charlene near Hay-on-Wye for that idea – a much better solution than a…

The Dairy – to the end of March 2016

At last, some brickwork that is actually going to be seen.  The walls of the extension will be white-painted render, and so we chose some blue-black engineering bricks for the base of the walls.  And a last-minute idea to have black mortar seems to be working well. The walls of the extension then started to go up quite quickly, and rooms shapes began to emerge.  Which leads to many questions;…

The Dairy – to the end of February 2016

We moved on to the foundations for the extension, which runs at a right angle to the main barn. Our Structural Engineer’s advice here was a beam-and-block floor, which has the advantage of being a fast way to get a floor in place.  However, the blue and brown clay meant that our trenches had to be (it seemed to me) massively deep and wide – almost more trench than ground by the time the digging…

The Dairy - to the end of January
The Dairy – to the end of January
Tumblr media
We built up a small amount of stonework on top of the retaining wall, and even at this early stage, it is possible to see a stone barn wall returning. The main focus this month has been on creating the patio area, which we decided to then extend with more retaining wall all the way down what will become the side of the house.  This was a defensive measure to avoid being thwarted by the wet and…
