Frozen Tales Don't Burn

Ok get ready for me absolutely gushing over this fic. Frozen Tales Don't Burn by phantom_star739 has functionally completed, the remaining runtime is going to be fluff and OH MY GOD I'M PROUD? OF THIS FIC! This thing has got it all! its got THEMES and MOTIFS baby!!! My #1 thing is the thread of identity and how Tommy thinks of himself and his hero ego and the number of times he feels like he has died. At the beginning of the fic he is upholding the mantle of his hero name Theseus and Theseus is a person with the baggage of the agency and his past and to him "Tommy" is just himself, and its someone very few people know him as. When the last person who only knew him as Tommy finds out he's Theseus, he describes it as "I just died" and I was OBSESSED with that and im SO GLAD that idea stuck around throughout the fic. Death of your past self and how you feel about it. AND ANOTHER THING! This fic earns its damn dynamics!!! We are not jumping straight into 'sbi family dynamic <3 <3' WE EARN THAT SHIT. THESE BITCHES HATE EACH OTHER FOR A WHILE! And I am so impressed by an author not shortcutting to the part where they care about each other, as much as I understand the temptation. Fantastic crimeboys fic. I also really appreciated Tommy's relationship with Techno having its own space and basis, I don't want to spoil it exactly but they actually know each other and I enjoy it. Also I'm a c!phil hater and I really liked FTDB!Tommy also being a Phil hater.... especially because it makes a lot of sense given the situation!!! thank you!!

Haven't touched on it yet but also Need to mention the discduo at least once. Really fucking good discduo and also a clingyduo that has to exist in the context of the discduo. Such a great Tubbo...... a really good tubbo right there...... he will keep all his emotions right there and then he'll die..... the discduo is so good as a ctommyer man... the true extent of how horrible FTDB!Tommy's situation was is revealed slowly through flashbacks its done really well you really get to simmer on how bad that situation was and then it keeps managing to be even worse than we thought

Just One Mistake (Is All It Will Take)

Thinking so hard about this vigilante au tonight. It feels pretty rare for me, personally, to read a fic where their aimsey is not the main character but still absolutely steals the show. JOM!Aimsey is so great, they're a hero who is lying about their power in a way that is very funny, but functionally really cool. In a fic dealing with life and death having someone who can walk the middle and show us the view of the dead works SO WELL both in giving us a final conversation with a permanently dead other character and reiterating the impending doom of the corruption spreading in the background of all the more human conflict. JOM!Aimsey is on the fringes of every major plotpoint. They're friends with Tubbo, who is an epicenter of some huge problems. They're a contact for the heroes. They're sympathetic to the vigilantes. Aimsey is truely a bridge of a character between every converging path of the narrative. GOD the JOM!Tubbo too. I'm a big c!Tubbo enjoyer. A big clingyduoer one might say. I love me a Tubbo that is absolutely fucking miserable trying to take on the entire world on his own to protect Tommy and the other vigilantes. Clingyduo in this fic are opposite ends of the same scheme being unable to escape no matter how desperately they're trying. I love when writing is good. I love when the real antagonist is quietly but clearly looming in the background. I love when a fic isnt afraid to main character death and phenomenal at giving those deaths weight.

I spent 20 minutes this morning thinking about a fic that’s been gone for something like 2 years now. They published 30k-50k words and then took it down to polish it, or something. I don’t really remember anymore. It was such a great budding exploration of growing up in a cult-mentality society and how eerie it is watching the people around the POV character (cTommy) be totally fine with eradicating magic and magic users. Like there’s a scene where Tommy is allowed to come to a witch burning for the first time with his family and is horrified by it, horrified by the people around him, but doesnt know WHY because he has always been taught that this is fine and normal. Also has one of my favorite little clingyduo tropes, where Tubbo is already on the outside of whatever system Tommy is loyal to and it hurts their friendship but Tubbo is still there to catch him when Tommy’s worldview inevitably drops out from under him. This is more common with hero au fics but its a little thing I often enjoy. A play on cTommy’s core trait of loyalty and how it can hurt him while simultaneously being all he has. Anyways religious trauma ctommy I miss you

Project:Sundrop has gotta be one of the strangest hero/villain au fics i’ve read. It’s got discduo but tommy has a pretty extensive support network that somewhat negates some of the core cDiscduo qualities. The most odd part to read is how it talk about addicts though. Really wild amounts of low sympathy, talks like the people addicted to this fictional hard drug made from tommy’s powers are literally no longer people. Like if you’re a drug addict you don’t have a soul anymore??? fucked up man. Also tubbo smokes weed and the narrative is like AND THATS GONNA KILL HIM girlie thats.    not what weed does. is the author mormon.
