How to Choose an International School in Kolkata for Studies?
International Schools are academic institutions that teach using British or American curriculum, and are very different from local or indigenous private or public schools that teach using a central or regional model of education, and follow either the Central or State academic board guidelines. Unlike the latter types of schools, International Schools allow a much better or more useful education that can hone a student and prepare him / her to match shoulders with their global counterparts from anywhere in the world. Here are some tips on how to choose the best international school in Kolkata for studies.
Check the review
Go through the review of various international schools in Kolkata on the internet, newspapers, magazines etc. While some of these are definitely biased, if the tone of most reviews is overwhelmingly positive, you can be more or less assured that the school is good in terms of overall quality of education and services. Make sure that you also conduct some offline background research, and find out what kind of word of mouth these enjoy. Talk to some of the parents and students of the schools, and ask about the infrastructure, quality of education, fees, security measures etc.
Pay a visit, personally
It would be a great idea to actually drop by and pay a visit to the schools that you shortlist for your child. Look at the ambiance in general. Is it friendly and inviting, or too strict and filled with morose children and teachers? A perfect international school is one that is neither too strict nor too relaxed, as you would like to send your child to an academic institution and not a prison. If the school feels like a prison, your kid is unlikely to enjoy his academic journey therein.
Check the fees
A few of the international schools actually have a high fee structure. You have to choose one that has a more affordable fee system, so that you are not taxed. Other than the tuition fees, there are ancillary expenses - such as uniform costs, library fees, excursion trip fees, course fees, expenses related to curriculum material etc. In many of these schools, the admission fee is quite high and non-refundable.
Know about the curriculum
Find out which model and system of education and curriculum is being followed by the international school - British or American. You have to check whether the school offers a holistic curriculum that comprises of classroom studies as well as field trips, excursions, practical, recitals, GK sessions, tours, elocutions, debates etc.
Check the infrastructure
Make sure that the school is equipped with all of the important infrastructural facilities, such as Computer Lab, Science Labs, Reading Room, Art Room, Library, School Bus, CCTV, smoke and fire alarm, round the clock security personnel etc. Learning can be enhanced in a school that has the right kind of infrastructure, and you have to choose one for your kid that can assure all the best amenities and facilities required for making his academic journey as smooth as possible.
