gift - @wolfstarmicrofic - word count: 266
“Merlin, Remus!” Lily gasped as Remus pulled the paper away from the final gift in the sizable pile he’d been presented for his sixteenth birthday. “Who gave you that?”
But he was too busy gaping at the present in his hand.
It was a small, brown, leather-bound journal. It had gold accents and his name stamped on the bottom-front cover, with little animal footprints along the corners and up the spine– footprints he recognized all too well, since he and his best friends had been leaving them around the forest for months, now. As he opened the book, the crisp pages creaked slightly, and he found the inside to be laid with paper, each page with a number neatly printed inside a star. The very front page had the words ‘Moony’s Thoughts’ written in an elegant script, a little crescent moon penned next to them. The whole thing, though absolutely stunning, had the slightly-clumsy air of being clearly handmade.
And Remus was in love with it. “I…” he gasped, instantly knowing who it was from, but also knowing that it had been left without a note for a reason. He looked up and met nervous gray eyes for only a moment before he looked back to Lily. “Someone very special,” he murmured, trying not to blush scarlet.
But as James and Peter yelled out with matching catcalls, accusing Remus of being a secret ‘player,’ Remus was too focused on Sirius’s reaction to care.
And, just as he knew it would be, the other boy’s thrilled smile at his words was well-worth a few hours of teasing.
