I think the single best most magnificently hysterical piece of vampire lore in any culture is that in some stories the penanggalan was a normal human woman and she instantly became the penanggalan when she was really REALLY surprised. You should all know what a penanggalan is. If you don't you can look it up though it is gory. But now picture how it'd have to look for the penanggalan to be created just because someone reacted too hard to being startled.
