"Nas: Time Is Illmatic" delves deeply into the history of Nasir "Nas" Jones and his groundbreaking record "Illmatic." It's more than just a documentary. The documentary presents a vivid picture of Nas' early childhood in the Queensbridge housing projects and the variety of influences that formed his artistic sensibilities. It is filmed utilizing a combination of uncut interviews and spectacular archive material.
By fusing personal stories with the hard reality of urban living in the early 1990s, this film goes beyond standard music documentaries and captures the socioeconomic conditions that nourished a masterpiece of hip-hop. These components are deftly combined by the cinematography, which enhances the narrative by bringing the audience closer to Nas' world through a combination of wide and close-up images.
The documentary's examination on music as well as its representation of the struggles African American communities face truly caught my attention. While never losing sight of the larger cultural and social conditions that shape and propel the story, it's a captivating look at Nas' ascent to fame. This documentary is not just about Nas, the artist, but also about the place and time period that gave rise to him.

With its exploration of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara's lives, "Cutie and the Boxer" highlights their entwined artistic and emotional problems. With a combination of new and vintage video, the documentary emphasizes the relationship between Noriko's quiet fortitude and Ushio's outspoken nature. In my opinion, their intricate bond was even more fascinating than their artwork. Their tale, which is one of love, growth, and sacrifice, demonstrates how intensely personal events may impact creative expression. This beautiful and inspirational story offers a sobering look at the sacrifices artists make for their profession, not just via their paintings but also through their life journey together. Their personal and creative lives are expertly woven together via this gripping documentary.

Image 1: Confrontation on the Field Type: Medium shot / Over the shoulder
Image 2: Beach Gathering Type: Wide shot
Image 3: Car Ride Type: Close-up
Image 4: Solitary Beach Walk Type: Wide shot / Over the shoulder In Roma, the camera keeps moving, smoothly shifting from one type of shot to another. This not only makes the story flow beautifully but also shows how each change can pull us deeper into the world on screen, transforming the way we experience the story.

Helvetica is so integrated into our urban environment that it's often overlooked. In this shot, the typeface on the bus numbers blends into the everyday cityscape, providing clear and concise information.
This "call angel" image shows Helvetica's versatility, even in informal contexts like street posters. The clean, bold letters grab attention and convey information effectively. It's so versetile even meth dealers use it.
The North Face logo shows how Helvetica can convey a brand’s identity with its clean, modern lines. The typeface’s clarity and professionalism enhance the brand's image, making it instantly recognizable and trustworthy
Helvetica's influence on modern design is crazy. It's used in everything from corporate logos to public signage, and even drug selling. It's clean, straightforward aesthetic makes it versatile everything. It's amazing to think about how ingrained this typeface is in our visual landscape. Helvetica is truly universal in use

From the documentary, it was surprising to notice how Helvetica was everywhere but I was not aware of it till watching. It made me realize how when something is natural up to a degree that you don't even notice, it's because behind it there's hard work of the people who intended it to be not noticed. Like Air.

Nas' iconic debut album, "Illmatic", weaves together Nas' personal journey with the social and cultural backdrop of 1990s New York City. It explores Nas' upbringing in the Queensbridge housing projects and how his environment influenced his music. One memorable scene is when Nas revisits his childhood home, reflecting on the struggles and triumphs that shaped his artistry. I loved how the documentary had a blend of archival footage, intimate interviews, and amazing cinematography to capture the essence of Nas' world. The shots of gritty city streets juxtaposed with lush studio settings created captivating visuals for the audience. The tight and dynamic editing, seemless transitions between past and the present moment, i feel like it allowed us to witness evolution of an artist and understanding cultural significance of 'Illmatic' within the context of time.

The cinematography portrayed their emotions to the viewer. It gives a glimpse into the intertwined lives of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, two Japanese artists going through life with a balance between love, art, and sacrifice. Through the lens of their relationship, the documentary explores the hardships of artistic ambition and personal identity. It also captures the tension between Ushio's larger-than-life persona and Noriko's quiet strength, revealing the impact it had on their dynamic, work, and lives.
What resonated deeply with me is the film's portrayal of the sacrifices artists make for their craft, especially within the context of marriage and family. Noriko's journey to assert her voice alongside Ushio's towering presence is both empowering and bittersweet, understanding the challenges of pursuing individual aspirations within a shared partnership.
As the film progresses, we witness Noriko's subtle growth towards independence, intertwined with Ushio's persistent narcissism and alcoholism. The archival footage about their decade-long journey adds depth and meaning to their story, highlighting the passing of time and growth through their relationship. A variety of bright colors were also used in the film.
