Feeling that your drawings can look a little bit more fun? Do your character designs seem a little bit static or generic? Maybe they need a small push to their proportions!

Calling all artists!
If your commissions are open and you do draw OC’s, please reblog this post!
If you are not an artist but know of one, please reblog this and tag them or just mention their url in the tags!
And hey, even just reblogging helps! I will be keeping a comprehensive list of artists who can be commissioned to draw characters/OC’s on the blog!

i think the thing about the calarts “style” is that its not that the styles are bad…its that they all follow a specific, simplified formula that makes a lot of the art not stand out from each other because a portion for students/graduates don’t try to find their own style after using those basics for easy animation learning and art study. repeating that; the calarts style isn’t suppose to be a permanent style, but an easy style used as a way of drawing characters for the bare bone learning of animation fundamentals and concept art versus final products..
the problem comes from the style constantly being used as the final product nowadays for larger companies like cartoon network or (especially) disney. it either all looks the same, or unpolished. franchises like thundercats, teen titans go, and even ok ko (despite my own guilty pleasure for the show) are cookies from the same cutter, with different toppings. it would be like if we had the anime-inspired cartoons, like avatar, og teen titans, and ben 10, but if we decided to start doing it in excess versus it being it’s own sub category.
a surplus in repetition, basically.
it’s easy animation and character design for the budget and time if anything, which would be understandable if learning 101 didn’t include learning how to use techniques for more advance, detailed styles to be animated as well (such as remembering that not every single 24 frames have to be used).
not to mention for some reason animation crews keep hiring people who graduated from calarts or have a style resembling the traits, which “inspires” aspiring artist to draw in a certain way in the hopes they’ll be recognized, leading away from unique styles and more so catering to getting a job/attention. essentially the parallel problem i see to the “tumblr style” that we see commonly around here (with this style no less inspired alot by shows that have the calarts feel).
so like, i don’t mind the “calarts style”, even if it’s less of a style and more so a unity of fundamentals. i just mind that it’s leeching originality and turning into the ideal way to get into the industry.

Prisma from @cubiccyan
I really love her design, and Cyrus, if you see this, how did you come up with the design of Prisma?

Hello, I was wondering if you have any advice on script writing and storyboarding for animation, I have recently got into script writing and storyboarding and I would really appreciate your advice, thank you.
Whenever you write and/or draw a scene, think about what you’re trying to communicate to the audience. Then after you write it, look at it critically and ask if all the choices help with that communication. Are they entertaining choices? Are they surprising choices? If you cut them out, does the scene work just as well or better? Essentially you have to go in with goals, and then you have to use those goals to critique your work.
That’s why planning helps. An outline, a scene breakdown, or a shot plan can help you not get lost in the minutia. A lot of times when I write, I start with an outline. I break down each scene into what needs to be accomplished. Where do the characters start emotionally and physically? Where do they need to end? What does the audience need to understand?  Then I start writing and drawing roughs. As i write I always ask myself, now how would a character actually react to what just happened or was said? Is there a more surprising reaction that still feels correct? I do different versions of the scene, trying to find the one I think works best. Then I cut it down. That’s basically my process.
