Final Submission!

Submitted my final work and signed the delivery sheet 😊

It has been a rollercoaster of a journey these past three years. Grateful for everything and I’m looking forward to bigger and better things in the time to come. Thank you Tatiana, Natalie and all other lecturers for all the support and guidance, it has been quite the experience.

Week 13 - Final Posters + Booklet (Digital Mock-ups)

Here are all my posters and my booklet in digital mock-up form. Have sent for print and should be getting them tomorrow.

It was difficult to find mock-ups that were in a cinema environment as it was too specific in nature. However the templates used below showcase the design well overall so I am happy with that.

Week 12 - Talk with Cornelius

Had a talk with Cornelius today about the cost of printing a single A1 or A0 poster in the printing room and he told me it would be $40 for A1 and $80 for a single A0. This was quite more than I expected so I talked to him about an online printing service which I have used before. Their pricing and print quality was quite good from the last time I printed so Cornelius recommended that he would also print with them instead to save cost and still get good quality prints. We talked about inkjet vs laser printing and how the online service might be more affordable due to them having a much larger volume of prints being done everyday compared to Uni printers that aren’t as frequently used in terms of printing in A1 or A0.

Week 11 - Poster Size

During the week 10 prototype session, I was recommended to look into up-scaling my poster sizes to something similar to a real poster SIZE. So as a result of this, I have made A1 and A0 copies of all the posters so I am ready to test and print in whichever size I decide to finally go for. I had asked Cornelius a while back as to which format would be best for printing and he told me TIFF would be good, so I have made all the final printing files in that format.

Week 10 - Prototype Session Feedback

Today’s prototype session allowed me to show my peers and lecturers my current work progress and developing prototype. Some of the things we discussed - 

- Maybe instead of doing 3 posters, switch to doing 6. This will help you better showcase the different sides and allow for a hero design element to be present on each of the posters. In the poster I showed, the design elements were too crowded together and it was a bit hard to see what the main design was. 

- Refine the illustrations (curves, small details) and make character colours more accurate

- Make sure your designs are equivalent to each other when showcasing 2 different sides in terms of sizing, colours, text

- Focus on more conventional poster techniques so your design actually looks like a movie poster series

- Refine text arrangement and try follow a grid 

- Consider upscaling the posters to A1 or A0 as these sizes give a better impact in terms of it being a movie poster 

Lots of things to refine and still have to start the other posters and writing the content for the booklet, not a lot of time left so it’s time to get working.

Week 10 - A5 Booklet Prototype

Since I changed my output after the formative feedback, I haven’t gotten much time to start working on the booklet as I have been prioritising my posters as the illustration takes longer. I still made a slightly refined mock version of the booklet just to show a better indication of the visual style I’m going for and what I might Include. 

The intention of the booklet is to give more context and information to the viewer regarding the movies and what they see in my posters. I wanted the posters to be more visual and have less text, this is why I opted to utilise a booklet to provide background information which will be my own writing but with references. 

Since the title of my booklet can have different interpretations, I created this clapboard illustration so it is easier for the viewer to easily recognise it as something related to movies.

Week 10 - Printing Prototype

Came in today to print my 1st poster prototype with the help of Cornelius. 

Matte and Pearl paper 

Also - I showed Cornelius one the posters I got from the cinemas, and he told me it is more towards the pearl stock and is usually used for commercial printing and is a better economical choice for that special use case. He mentioned that if I wanted to get a similar look, I can use one of the bigger printers in the printing room. I’ll consider this when printing the final posters.

There were certain settings I needed to be reminded of before printing, Cornelius guided me through it and I took photos of the settings so I know the steps for the next time I print in the printing room.

Final result. Printing with an almost final design has given me a good idea of the size of the poster and also the different design elements and how the colours have come out. Next steps from here are to get feedback on this poster tomorrow during the prototype session and then work towards the final design.

Week 10 - Poster Design #1 - Part 9

Before I finalise my prototype poster for print, I have added a few more illustrations and text to the poster.

Both Forrest Gump and Laal Singh Chaddha showcase many scenic views in the movie so I wanted that to be included somehow in the poster. I tried creating this grassland environment and desert type environment.

After adding the environments in, I used masking techniques to make them fit the shape of each of the silhouettes. Currently really liking the design at this stage. 

Tried adding quotes from the film and warping them to fit around the silhouettes however there wasn’t much purpose behind doing this

Instead, I have opted to use normal text but have tried to use it cleverly by making it look like the film credits at the end of a movie, however, in the form of quotes. This is the design I’ll be printing tomorrow and hopefully after my prototype session on Wednesday, I will be able to finalise the arrangement and design of the poster.

Week 10 - Booking Printer

Went up to Level 7 today after the 703 class to discuss with Cornelius about the different paper stock available for printing in A2. He mentioned Fine Art Smooth Matte paper and also Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper. I have booked the Epson M 5070 Wide format Printer to print my prototype tomorrow and will also show Cornelius an example of a poster I have with me and ask him what the closest paper stock would be to that.

 I actually went to watch a movie on Saturday and there was a selection of posters being sold for a small price at the cinemas. I picked up all the Bollywood posters and stuck them on my wall at home.

Week 9 - Poster Design #1 - Part 8

Went back to one of my older ideas to see if I can view it with a new perspective and I think now I can see some potential within this design with whatever I have so far

Placed it in the poster and currently I can see that I have shown a better sense of the two movies, just need to continue to develop this further. 

Because I had included Forrest’s mother, I wanted to include Laal’s as well as both the mother figures have played a significant role in their sons lives.

Week 9 - Poster Design #1 - Part 7

I thought of maybe trying a new layout idea but use symmetry instead this time so that all sides are balanced.

Started with a simple circle, might place the Forrest and Laal Illustration here:

I created two different sides for each of the movies design to fit within

I think the idea wasn’t that bad, however I think my execution could have better. Felt like the shapes were restricting the design possibilities so scraped this idea as well
