It’s been six months since Stella died and in the last week I’ve felt like I’ve been moving backward in my grief. ChatGPT tells me that’s normal, and that six months is a tricky spot in grief because everyone assumes I’ve moved on and should be ok, and I’m not. I probably should book an appointment with my therapist instead of asking AI why I’m crying at 4 p.m., willing to give anything to be able to holler “Stella!” and see her come running around a corner, full-speed, just as happy to see me as I am her. This sweet girl got her stitches out today and was told she did an amazing job healing her foot. We’ll be resuming daily walks forthwith. As a side note: I don’t say enough what a wonderful dog Ellie is. I’m in several dog behavior/training groups where I see day after day people struggling to meet their dogs’ needs or where the dog is clashing with other pets in the house and I feel so lucky to never have experienced that. Maybe I’m jinxing myself by saying it out loud, but Ellie joined us as a full-ass adult dog who’d lived two lives (as a race dog and then in a home with another family) before she came to us five years ago, yet she easily and quickly blended into our chaos. 2022 was a rollercoaster of a year. Old Blue escaped in February and then I spent a week tracking and finally trapping him again. We took a really great beach trip, and I got to visit with my family in Austin for a whirlwind weekend. Zelda got a tiny tent! I got a couple COVID boosters over the year and started to feel safer about being out in the world, and somehow still haven’t gotten sick. (Yet.) I hung out with friends almost every week, which I’ll never take for granted again after more than a year as a hermit. I got laid off at the beginning of December, which bummed me out, but I’ve kept myself very busy and am really looking forward to what comes next. I don’t think Ellie was mistreated when she was a race dog; she loves people too much and is only scared of thunder and ghosts.
