I'm excited to announce that after much preparation, I have organized a community Ship Week event and a Magma paint chat room dedicated to the Hoyboy and Cat Angel Man themselves: Walter and Jonathan from SMTIV! 😈😇 Despite these two being an iconic alignment duo, and the SMTIV duology establishing their deep bond rife with with all the classic shipping tropes throughout the games (even with their JP voice actors having many Boy's Love roles LOL), there actually isn't much out there for this pairing.

We can strive to change that!

Hey there again, anon! Thank you again for your patience! You're absolutely welcome, anon! I'm glad you found it insightful. Truthfully, I remembered so much more *after* your question, that I regretted not compiling some of those differences into a big masterpost, ahaha! -- For example, I just found out a couple of days ago that in the ENG localization, MARA (YES, THE DEMON) is a female....?! LOL. I'm all for that! Buuuuut this is yet another "ENG localization exclusive" thing, since the JP does not mention this at all. At least, not that I can personally remember😱

Regarding your new question (under the cut!):

So this requires some context: I come from a multilingual and multicultural family, but I'm not JP. Despite this, I heard JP be spoken around me growing up and learned hiragana/katakana as a joke between my elementary school friends (LOL long story that involved me printing out a lot of genkoyoshi paper despite not knowing what it was at the time, and learning hiragana/katakana in a week).

I also grew up playing games in JP as a kid (Pokemon Gold and MOTHER 3 being some of them, I even own the physical carts). And I used to watch a lot of Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Pretty Cure on TV.

All of this being said, I feel it dishonest to give you a solid answer regarding "how long it took me to become comfortable to play games", because everyone's language learning journey is unique and different.

My journey in learning JP had that "childhood learning buff" (let's call it that LOL) since I grew up speaking three languages prior to this. So, I truly cannot give you a direct answer as to "when" I personally felt comfortable interacting with JP media. It truly came as a result of a couple of years of on-and-off immersion, and studying things like kanji, vocab, and grammar on my own (having a lot of free time as a kid on the internet). Again: Everyone's language learning journey is different. Please don't pressure yourself to be "fast" or feel like you are slow. What matters is these three steps: learning, retention (long term memorization), and application (using those words in daily life). I highly recommend looking up videos regarding other people's own personal language learning journeys to see which person's learning style and learning regimen resonates with you the most.

Here are my suggestions on how to level up if you feel like you're struggling:

★Find media like books, manga, games or very simple children's books that have furigana (the small hiragana/katakana above the kanji) to familiarize yourself with commonly-used kanji (the first 100 at least, if you need to start somewhere).

★Such media with furigana include: -the Pokemon Special manga (this is a huge one and is definitely what carried me throughout my childhood and teenage years with all the vocab I learned NGL LOL) -Very popular shoujo/shounen manga like Cardcaptor Sakura and YuGiOh, since they're for younger audiences. -Games that have furigana like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet (this was the first Pokemon game to have furigana) as well as Yokai Watch, Animal Crossing (3DS). Any games published by Nintendo should have furigana.

★Try also reading some children's stories like folktales. They can help give you some historical + cultural insight while learning the language too. Japanese is a "high context" language, meaning that these allusions to their culture are imperative to your future understanding of the language. ★Consider getting into children's TV media like Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Pretty Cure, Detective Conan or etc. What you need right now is immersion and exposure to media that is easy to digest and understand. (as a side note, I actually really love Tokusatsu and I can easily say this is what helped me out a lot too LOL). ★Consider leveling up your vocab a bit first, by learning the most essential words used in daily life (look up "commonly used JP words" lists out there that include both kanji and hiragana) ★Consider keeping a little notebook where you can write words down to look up their definitions later. It's been proven by science that physically writing with a pencil on paper (vs typing) can lead to better retention. Plus, keeping things within a special notebook can help centralize all of your JP learning to one notebook that you can reference. ★Consider asking yourself the following questions: -How do you personally retain the most information? Is it by writing, reading, or speaking? -How much time are you able to dedicate to your studies? -Do you feel most comfortable learning in a class setting with structure and instruction, OR are you self-motivated + prefer learning on your own?

Depending on your answers, you will slowly begin to understand your ideal learning style.

And most importantly: Remember to have fun! Take it easy and take it slow. You're doing great! 👍

That being said, here's my lengthy response to this LOL (Removed the Read More cut on June 7th 2025)

Oh anon, there's a lot to cover! And it'd be difficult to list all of the differences especially since some require cultural + historical context and knowledge (and I'll be completely honest, a long time has passed since last touching this game in 2021).

🌟One of the most interesting differences that I feel confident discussing would be the unique personal pronouns used by characters, which add an extra element to their personalities and how they view + interact with other people in their world. IE: Lucifer and Merky using the archaic 汝 for others and 我 for themselves, some using お主 and other pronouns showing rank/hierarchy, Burroughs using ワタシ in katakana to denote that she's robotic/a program, the contrast between Walter's オレ (+ his casual speech) and Jona's 僕 which later adds an extra element from Jona's initial respectful/amicable demeanor + softer speech patterns VS his shift into extremist beliefs and harsher speech patterns, etc. 🌟Also fun fact: Merkabah's Phase 1 voice is actually pitched up to sound feminine versus Lucifer's Phase 1 voice being pitched down to sound deeper and more masculine. My friends that played this game in ENG were surprised to hear Merky's vocal distortion purposely sound notably feminine in his Phase 1 form in JP LOL. Personally, I've always believed this is due to Merkabah representing the Divine Feminine and Lucifer representing the Divine Masculine. (spiritual concepts that go beyond human social constructs of gender, sex etc). Even their designs push this idea further and depict this concept literally, with Merky's revealing female chest + curvy silhouette and Lucy showing off his masculine torso as he wears a revealing traje de luces--an outfit from a sport heavily associated with masculinity. In spiritual contexts, the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine aspects of your soul come together within yourself to form a "Divine Union", which is the concept of achieving stability, wholeness and balance. Though, a Divine Union can also be extended to include achieving harmony within relationships, etc. Interestingly enough, you find out that Lucifer and Merkabah fuse to become Satan in SMT4 FINAL. Thus, both Lucy and Merky have achieved their own Divine Union--not to mention how as Satan, they are also effectively the other half of YHVH as well. See also: "Wounded Divine Masculine/Feminine Traits" to see how those personality traits are just Walter and Jonathan's gradual character progressions into becoming Lucifer and Merkabah too, LOL.

(I actually wrote wayyyy more about this with in-game screenshots from the Neutral Route as well, but ended up deleting it since it was super off-topic LOL. If there's interest, please leave me another askbox message and I'll discuss this a bit further! Especially within the context of Walter and Jonathan's unique relationship. and why I love them so much LOL) 🌟Getting back to the main topic: The usage of personal pronouns in JP is difficult to properly translate into ENG, especially with some characters denoting their rank or position of power against others. Japanese is a hierarchical language and sometimes has 曖昧/ambiguity that requires reading the atmosphere to perceive indirect meanings. Even within video game text, these things can be tricky to TL into ENG without someone having a strong understanding of these concepts to faithfully translate (or localize) the general gist of what is being said without erasing or heavily editing the original intent. There's so much more you can discuss, but as I am not 120% fluent in JP, nor am I claiming to be (and I don't ever claim to be an authority figure on explaining these types of things), I definitely encourage you, especially if you are learning JP as well, to look more into the unique nuances + cadence that each personal pronoun has.

🌟Another thing I found interesting was how Luxorors and Casualries, in the JP version, are called "Luxuries" and "Casualties". Perhaps the change in ENG was to not give away too much of the story, or to perhaps lessen the harshness of the word "Casualty" itself. → There's also the potential link between the necessity of having Demonoids and Nourishers VS Mikado having Luxorors and Casualties. It's an interesting brainworm to think about and can imply many things, leaving you wondering about the original true purpose of a Luxoror/Casualry system to begin with LOL (knowing what we know about King Aquila from base SMT4 and SMT4FINAL). Like, the fact that they are so overtly called "Casualties" makes it incredibly obvious of their oppressed status and fate.

🌟And finally, one of the last things I'll mention for now since this is getting super long (LOL) is the very obvious implications of Jonathan being gay and his discomfort with females which got removed in ENG.

(And the whole 「僕は本当は．．．猫さんなんだぞぉ～」 comment plus the double entendre of calling yourself a 猫 as a gay man)... SMT has never shied away from double meanings or topics like these, so I've always thought this double entendre was intentional. Like, "if you know, you know". (The way my eyeballs comedically popped out of my skull when getting to this part of the game when reading this dialogue back then was WILD. I thought I was just being a delusional ワルヨナ腐男子 until coming across THIS LOL.) 🌟There's also the extra audios of the SMT4 JP voice actors from the official SMT4 website that never got TL'd into English. There's a lot of them from different characters, so check them out! The audio messages on Hiroshi Kamiya's side (Jona's VA) very much indicate Jonathan's discomfort towards women, (and perhaps his family background comprising of 3 sisters having to do with this) and feeling more comfortable admitting certain things around men: https://megaten4.jp/mega_spo/01.html

🌟I remember showing screenshots of the iconic "Let's go to the bakery" scene in the beginning of the game with my friends in 2022 (I literally went back in my Discord history to find this LOL) and they all found it crazy that the JP version blatantly mentioned Jonathan being uncomfortable with the concept of flirting with females.（僕はそんな．．．女性とだなんて．．．) whereas the ENG version removed this completely.

I was definitely surprised that the ENG version removed the mention of females to begin with. Personally, I would've translated it along the very rough lines of, "Doing such a thing… with girls…!" (and his flustered sprite obviously giving away that he finds the idea uncomfortable, thus doing more Showing than Telling LOL). There's other moments that show this side of Jonathan more too, which is also again, another story for another time LOL.

🌟In essence: I hope this encourages you to play the game in JP if you're learning the language, and allows you to gain more context regarding their world and a deeper understanding of these characters. Thanks for the question!👋

Admittedly, because I've only experienced the duology in a different language, I feel like I don't have the right to interact with others who like this game too LOL (???) due to these slight differences that affected how I perceive the SMT4 world and these characters, and perhaps that can also explain my own isolationist tendencies. But trust that it does not come from a bad place--rather my own insecurities and anxieties regarding interacting in online spaces LOL. Despite this, I really do appreciate you reaching out and your genuine question. ✊

⭐️3. Show us your oldest piece of art you have on hand

→ It was a real trip down memory lane to look back on some of these, but here's a sample of some old things from 2021-early 2022! (Prior to posting on social media in Aug 2022) Back then, I didn't have any real incentive to improve my art outside of drawing quick sketches like the pictures above. I had issues being cleanly (due to lack of motivation), committing to learning character details, and more LOL. →Fun fact, I drew on a very tiny 11 inch screen 4GB RAM laptop with horrible color calibration for about 3 years until finally getting something better in early 2022 too LOL. It might be noticeable in some of the above pictures with the color choices being a little too light or too saturated, LOL.

→As also seen at the bottom of this post, It might come as a surprise that I also draw fanart for my favorite assorted fandoms outside of megaten too, LOL. I just never post it in public since they're meant as warm-up doodles!

To be honest, 2020 thru late 2022 was a very low point in my life. I had given up on all creative endeavors at the time due to: My career, being diagnosed with a bodily issue of which the effects I still deal with even today, and other personal issues.

It truly wasn't until late 2022 (when I started posting online) that I truly felt confident picking up my tablet pen again and view art in a more positive light…!

NGL I had written out my entire life story here but ended up deleting it--it would have made this post terribly long regardless LOL💦 Perhaps it'll be a story for another time, though!!🙏 And it absolutely has to do with why the Samurai husbands mean lot to me!

⭐️18. What is your purpose for drawing?

→ That's a good question! For me, (especially due to my visual agnosia) it'd have to be the ability to draw whatever comes to mind with skill and precision. To not hold back and draw whatever comes into your mind's eye without fear or hesitation from others (or your own critical inner voice)… And to be able to properly convey the meaningful themes of your work as clearly as they come into your mind... That, to me, is true freedom.

➡️As for BL content: Despite not posting much of it in public (yet), my purpose in drawing BL (or OTP content in general) is to transmit feelings of love + warmth in my art! To depict tenderness, warmth, and love with affectionate, natural-looking body language to make it as believable + realistic as possible...That's always been my goal! →The world is a scary place out there. Though, if my OTP content can make someone feel a slight glimmer of peace, tranquility, or even hope to keep moving forward...then I'll be incredibly happy!🙏💕 It's always my intention to convey nothing but sweet wholesome vibes and warmth with my pictures, and I truly hope that feeling comes across too. ➡️I'll be super candid and say I actually really enjoy angst and raunchy content as much as everyone else! But drawing wholesome + sweet characters in love just comes much sooo much easier and naturally as breathing to me, LOL. Just because I don't post angst or raunchy things, doesn't mean I dislike it! ☝️

⭐️22. List at least one of your “artspirations.”

→ I tend to gravitate towards professional artists with thick painting (厚塗り) coloring styles, dynamic illustrations, and artists that have a strong grasp of anatomy, character design and storytelling! It's hard to pick just one, so here's a brief selection of ones that come up at the top of my head right now!

Hey there! Aw, thank you for the questions! It's super rare to get asks like these, so it really made my day! 😇🙏

⭐️4. What defines your artistic style?

That's a good question!🤔 (Especially since I don't know how others might perceive my art!) Due to my own visual agnosia as well, it skews my perception of my own works... So I actually end up disliking the grand majority of the things I create tbh🤣 It's hard for me to become cognizant of any strengths due to the weaknesses being highlighted (in my skewed POV) sometimes! But from the comments I have kindly received before, I would say that my art is defined by: clean/polished lineart, round/"squishy" chibis, warm colors, and "an aura of softness/tenderness"! Truthfully, I would love to be known for having a well-rounded and versatile style! As in: switching from a dynamic + appealing full-body style to a charming chibi style with precision and confidence!💪 And in general: I'd like to be known for drawing handsome faces on full-body characters instead of only having a "cute" style tbh LOL

⭐️8. What is your favourite piece that you have done?

Oh man…For a self-critic, this is a tough yet great question too!!😂--There's usually elements of a picture I enjoy working on VS how the overall picture eventually turns out! But looking back at everything I've posted publicly so far on twitter from 2022-2023…I think it'd have to be these! ↓

And a special shout out to this Walter-Lucifer pseudo-fiend character turnaround sheet that started off as a "haha just messing around :^)" sketch but then quickly turned serious 2 days later LOL. I did like incorporating SMT4 Lucifer's Phase 2 wings on him, since the in-game design includes this gradient on the wings too. 😇🙏

As a surprise to no one, my favorite thing to draw would be WalterJonathan---both the pairing and the individual characters LOL. There's actually a personal reason for this, but maybe that'll be a story for another time! Whether or not the majority of these (finished/ polished) sketches will ever see the light of day is also to be determined in the future...😂 Despite these canon Satan Husbands going through the many unspeakable horrors they suffer within base SMT4 + SMT4 Apoc's canon (and even the duology of the SMT4 manga's canon too!), I'll always prefer to draw them being sweet with each other...🥺 To at least give them a single soft moment of reprieve that they deserve...!😭🙏

↑ I also enjoy drawing the details of the SMT4 samurai coat/uniform! As well as other things and details like: 💙the SMT protags' COMPs + SMT4 Gauntlet 💙Clothing folds 💙Side profiles 💙Backside angles 💙Painting hair 💙Drawing hands 💙Dynamic chibis + dynamic body language in general (that convey a character's personality)

…and probably some more things I'm forgetting LOL.

💙↑ edit: I forgot how much I like sketching out Pokemon as quick warm-ups + other critters like the MOTHER/Earthbound Mr.Saturns too! It's good practice in understanding different shapes.

↑ Here are some more super rough/unfinished sketches from late 2022-2023. Truthfully, I hold back on posting a lot of my drawings LOL... As a harsh self-critic, it's hard to let loose and have fun, but it's something I'd like to remedy this 2024! → A lot of it is WalterJonathan/ワルヨナ related, and it's a pairing that truly means a lot to me! (and perhaps it can explain my hesitation in sharing 99% of my OTP art with the world LOL)

→ Yes! I have absolutely considered taking comms in the future! Chibi commissions only, (for now) though! I feel confident quickly drawing dynamic chibi poses at this time💪 (the Clip Studio Paint timelapse below is def related LOL)

⭐️19. What medium/program do you use the most in your art?

→ I heavily use Paint Tool SAI 2 for everything! But for more elaborate backgrounds and pictures, I flip-flop between SAI, CLIP Studio Paint and Photoshop.
