Palitana Shatrunjay Mahatirth History
Palitana's Shatrunjay Mahatirth is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Jains. It is located in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, India. The tirth is famous for its 900+ intricately carved marble temples, spread across the Shatrunjay Hill, making it one of the largest temple complexes in the world.
Historical Significance
According to Jain tradition, Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinath), the first Tirthankara, sanctified this hill.
It is believed that Pundarik Swami, a disciple of Lord Rishabhanatha, attained moksha (liberation) on this hill, making it a sacred Siddha Kshetra.
The first temple was built by King Kumarapala (12th century CE) under the guidance of Jain Acharya Hemachandra.
Over centuries, wealthy Jain merchants and devotees contributed to the construction and restoration of temples.
Architectural Grandeur
The temples, mainly built from white marble, showcase exquisite Solanki-style architecture.
The Adinath Temple (Rishabhanatha Temple) is the main temple, adorned with delicate carvings.
The hill has tunnels, hidden chambers, and artistic domes, making it an architectural wonder.
Pilgrimage and Rituals
Climbing 3,750 stone steps (approx. 3.5 km) to the summit is a significant religious practice.
Devotees perform the Shatrunjay Yatra, with the most important being the Kartiki Poonam Yatra.
The hill remains closed at night, as it is believed that celestial beings visit the site for prayers.
Interesting Facts
It is one of the five most important Jain pilgrimage sites (Panch Tirtha).
The temples are completely vegetarian zones, and leather items are strictly prohibited.
The entire Shatrunjay Hill is considered sacred, so even saints and monks do not stay overnight.
Palitana Shatrunjay Mahatirth is a symbol of devotion, spirituality, and Jain heritage, attracting thousands of pilgrims worldwide every year.
