Fifty-one years ago, on Feb. 21st, 1972, history took a major turn. China’s Chairman Mao gave the visiting President Richard Nixon of the United States, a welcome gift, a thoughtfully chosen famous Chinese oolong tea Da Hong Pao, with just 400 grams in a gift box. Chairman Mao was a tea drinker, and liked to drink concentrated tea as well. At the time it seemed that President Nixon was puzzled for a bit having been given such a small amount of tea. Realizing the confusion, China's prime minister Zhou Enlai explained to President Nixon that this 400g of tea was actually China's most precious tea, from the mother bushes of the famed Da Hong Pao oolong, which produced only 800g from an entire year's crop. So with his witty tone Premier Zhou said that Chairman Mao actually gave you "half of the country". President Nixon smiled. Putting this into context, the value of this gift would be equivalent to a million dollars today. The mother bushes of Da Hong Pao are said to be more than 350 years old (see the picture below). In 2006, the Wuyi mountain local government decided to halt production from the mother bushes to preserve and nurture its life. Now the six bushes on the Nine Dragon Rock is one of the Wuyi mountains' major tourist sites. Fast-forwarding to today, with its amazing tasting quality and the blending skills of the Wuyi tea masters, Da Hong Pao remains one of the prominent Wuyi Rock Teas along with Rou Gui and Shui Xian varietals. For more on this tea and its origin, read our latest blog on our website @ meimeitea.com. #wuyishan #oolongtea #chinesetea #presidentsday #wulong #dahongpao #meimeifineteas (at Fairfax County, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5xVQxOhFR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The inaugural monthly tea from our Ultimate Puerh Tea Reserve Educational Subscription has shipped! The May- July monthly teas will be focused on the differences in terroir among the major #puerh tea regions: Mengku, #Menghai, #Yiwu, and Jingmai, from different perspectives including aging, storage and maocha. #Maocha is the loose leaf form of puerh tea, prior to being pressed into cakes. This month, we are comparing and studying four Maocha samples: three 21-gram samples and one 15-gram sample. On my sourcing trips to puerh regions, maocha is the main form of puerh tea that I cannot ignore and must taste before I make a purchase decision. Sometimes I drink dozens different maochas to determine which batch is the most desirable. #puer #sheng #shu #puerhtea #tealover #subscriptionbox #subscription https://www.instagram.com/p/CdbNHIXOoNg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I salute 2019! What another wonderful year of tea, travel, friendship and business growth. These are some of my favorite photos of 2019 tea sourcing trip. I have ton of them, I can’t list them all here. When I was on my trip in China’s legendary tea mountains, I couldn’t publish the photos due to restrictions on FB and Instagram in China. Tea has led me to travel far, more than 20,000 miles each year, from southeastern China’s Zejiang and Fujian province to southwestern China’s Yunnan province, from the East China Sea to its southwest borders with Laos and Myanmar, I enjoyed my journey, even including the hardship and difficult labor at times. I am grateful for the freedom to pursue my passion and being able to carry out my direct sourcing philosophy. Tea has cultivated in me the power and willingness to run a minority woman-owned business and rewarding me as an advocate for tea culture and personal growth. Cheers to tea! I hope you have enjoyed every moment of your 2019 as well. Welcome to the new decade and enjoy! Wishing everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020! https://www.instagram.com/p/B6zSlTUAX0a/?igshid=tm6cuwyq54vd

What tea do you prefer in the evening? We like our 2008 Sweet Breeze organic Mu Ye Cun Shu #puerh tea cake. Made by a prestigious puerh tea producer, has been aged for 11 years, prime for consumption. Not the average #shu you might normally find on the market. Very sweet and creamy. At the end of the day, it just quiets my mind and soothes my body. You should try it! Did you know that tea leaves can be used to fetch water out in the wilderness? On the way to a puerh tea terrace in a remote Yunnan #puerh mountain area, we had to walk about an hour on a very narrow winding dirt road. We were thirsty, so the local farmer girl tought me how to use tea leaves to make a spoon to catch water. So clever and it just added a bit more fun to our #tea mountain hike. #puer #hiking #teajourney #chinesetea https://www.instagram.com/p/B4zs-gaAVs6/?igshid=p5durn9m8uo6

Repost from @knappuer. Great shots of the Rou Gui Wuyi oolong. Waterfall Cave Is one of the 36 rocks in the Wuyi Mountains that produces the prestigious robust sensational rock oolong. Not all teas created equal, it is especially true when it comes to Wuyi oolong. The locals call the core producing area within the 36 rocks are Zhen Yan, meaning authentic original rocks. Rock oolong that produced outside of the core area is just not the same even they look the same. #tea #oolong #wuyi #chinesetea #tealicious #oolongtea https://www.instagram.com/p/B4p-VCKgYfO/?igshid=whwwwku16qqq

Morning tea trio. Happy hump day! Can you guess what region of this puerh tea is from? Pick from three: Menghai, Yiwu, Lincang. It is robust, a little astringent, aromatic, full bodied, from a famous village. #puer #tea #humpday #sheng #chinesetea https://www.instagram.com/p/B4hpiCugrcR/?igshid=xnhad1dkqaz7
