Fifty-one years ago, on Feb. 21st, 1972, history took a major turn. China’s Chairman Mao gave the visiting President Richard Nixon of the United States, a welcome gift, a thoughtfully chosen famous Chinese oolong tea Da Hong Pao, with just 400 grams in a gift box. Chairman Mao was a tea drinker, and liked to drink concentrated tea as well. At the time it seemed that President Nixon was puzzled for a bit having been given such a small amount of tea. Realizing the confusion, China's prime minister Zhou Enlai explained to President Nixon that this 400g of tea was actually China's most precious tea, from the mother bushes of the famed Da Hong Pao oolong, which produced only 800g from an entire year's crop. So with his witty tone Premier Zhou said that Chairman Mao actually gave you "half of the country". President Nixon smiled. Putting this into context, the value of this gift would be equivalent to a million dollars today. The mother bushes of Da Hong Pao are said to be more than 350 years old (see the picture below). In 2006, the Wuyi mountain local government decided to halt production from the mother bushes to preserve and nurture its life. Now the six bushes on the Nine Dragon Rock is one of the Wuyi mountains' major tourist sites. Fast-forwarding to today, with its amazing tasting quality and the blending skills of the Wuyi tea masters, Da Hong Pao remains one of the prominent Wuyi Rock Teas along with Rou Gui and Shui Xian varietals. It never fails to amaze me when a tiny rolled ball turns into a gaiwan full of leaves. This is a Bing Dao dragon ball from @meimeifineteas. Happy National Hot Tea Day! Who knew that was a thing? Anyway this amazing Dragon Well is from Victoria at @meimeifineteas I nearly melted from the aroma of hot butter and sweet veggies in the hot dry leaf. Poured clear and finished crisp and sweet. #firstteaofmyday @meimeifineteas Phoenix Dan Cong Pomelo Flower Oolong Tea, a delicious #dancong that is like mouth music. Using my #purrplecup and #tokoname pot, which has become a bit of an everything dark teapot and I'm curious to see how it will affect the clay. Ok really it's just hongcha and oolong, though not so much with green Oolong, or really heavily roasted yancha. Drinking @meimeifineteas Phoenix Dan Cong Ya Shi Oolong Tea, #yashixiang is a favorite #dancong of mine, and this is a delightful delicate example of it, tasting of pears, papaya, orchids, and incense (nag champa to be exact) and I love that.
