What about your “Friends”?  — Platonic the Series
When I first heard about Platonic, the first thing that I thought about the Small Doses Podcast episode “Side Effects of Platonic Relationships”. Amanda defined a platonic relationship as: “ when you are with somebody who is the sexual group that you would be attracted to, but you are not sexually attracted to them...well you’re homies.” Homies being the keyword. This line is blurred so often which is why most men and women do not want their significant others have friends of the opposite sex. There is even a line in the show’s description that says “The one you want to see as a brother, but sometimes when he's in the right light you always wonder…” So I was excited to watch the show because I “wondered” too.
Relationships and best friends go hand in hand. Everyone always want to marry their best friend. Friends fortunately, or unfortunately have a have a major impact on your relationship. Having a friend of the opposite sex has an even bigger impact. I mean I get it, we have women out there who call their best friends their “brother” which many times is code for “ we fucked, I wanna fuck or we fucked and he didn’t want a relationship with me so I’m going to stick around and be his ‘friend’ and hopefully he will change his mind”. There was also that one time that Twitter dared people to text their best guy/girl friend “ you want to give me head as a friend” and people were wildin because the responses were not “best friend” responses (Which hurts my point of platonic relationships, but social media does way too much sometimes). Let me stop rambling because this is about the show Platonic, but all of this is coming together I promise. Wood and Brea are best friends and have been through shit together, but there is obvious something else there. But Wood has a girl who isn't falling for this “best friend” shit. So what does she do.. Gives Wood an Ultimatum Brea or her?
*I personally don’t think this was a good move. I believe if you have to give someone an ultimatum, the choice has already been made.
This ultimatum is the kick off into the lives of Brea and Wood, their constant battles between their friendship and relationship, debates on if guy friends should pay for their girl friends meal when they hangout, and how annoying it is when your family makes it known who they want you to be with.
This series is more than Wood and Brea having some sexual tension, it’s really about their relationship dynamic and how comfortable they are with each other. It’s helps you understand why “I want to marry my best friend” is a thing. With your best friend there is no pressure. Living as your true self is enough. There are unspoken vows that you take as a best friend “From this day forward I promise to still hang out with you when you look horrible, but also tell you that you need to get it together. I promise to tell you when are you wrong, but defend you around company. I promise to support your dreams, but tell you that you need a plan.”
Brea and Wood have a familiarity with each other that allows them to be more vulnerable in their friendship than they can be in any other relationship. Best scene in the whole series is when Wood was helping Brea cut out some of her tracks. What! How many women trust their man enough to help cut out their tracks?! Shit, how many people trust anyone but their stylist to do anything to their hair? That is a level of trust that is unmatched. There is a scene when Brea and Wood are sitting in the car eating ihop, you find out later on why this place is so sentimental for them. Brea says that this is something that he should be sharing with his girlfriend and says “if you weren’t there then I wouldn’t have told you.” So for every woman that comes into his life, Brea will always know something that his girlfriend doesn’t know, there will always be a disconnect.
On the surface Platonic is a series about a guy and a girl who are best friends that have a strong chemistry that can look more like romantic than platonic. As I continue to watch the show it has more depth. It is about establishing boundaries, vulnerability, self awareness and cultivating relationships that are good for you.
Bottom line Wood and Brea are best friends, there may be feelings there that need to be explored, but either way they need to be in each other’s lives. While trying to navigate life it helps to have that one reason that understands you. Platonic reminds me of why I love Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar and more recently Advent Calendar. Besides being a low key hopeless romantic, I stan for entertainment about best friends falling in love because that loved is based on a person that loves you for your transparency. Now at some point Wood and Brea will have to make a decision on the relationship, but right now, I’m rooting for them.
Platonic was created by Moni Oyedepo and is currently streaming Season 1 on Youtube.

Where can I watch shows created and casted for US?
As Amanda Seales says “every experience is a black experience unless it is anti black”. Every single one of those experiences deserve to told and represented. Although there has been some progress in mainstream entertainment, there is still much more progress to go and there are still people that are not represented.  Below are some platforms that have diverse and quality content that show a variety of black experiences. Of course not EVERY experience, but different experiences.

UMC – Urban Movie Channel was created by Robert L. Johnson, Chairman of RLJ Entertainment and founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), UMC is an urban-focused subscription streaming service in North America and features quality urban content that showcases feature films, documentaries, original series, stand-up comedy, and other exclusive content for African American and urban audiences.

A lot of people don’t support because they do not know. I felt that I should share just a few of platforms that I know make it their duty to share original and quality content about all black experiences.

I cut my hair in 2010. I didn't do it to change society’s views of beauty, It wasn't a rebellion of the creamy crack (even though I hated them), my mom didn't tell me I was prettier with straight hair (even though she relaxed because it was easier to handle). It wasn't a Nappily Ever After story. I just just hated the burn of relaxers and I wanted an afro.
I transitioned for 8 months and then got tired of the two textures, so December 2010, around 2 am, I chopped all of my hair off. I wouldn't say it was empowering in that moment, but I did feel different. It was weird to have my face on full display. Thick ass lips, big nose, thick eyebrows and a head full of short course nappy ass hair. I say this with excitement, not disappointment. Throughout my transition, I watched tons of videos on moisturizing, wash n go, the best ways to define your curls, how to accessorize your TWA, I was pretty much an expert by the time I had Big Chopped. Being natural was a whole new world (it was like when I discovered the world of all black cast movies on Netflix, it changed my life forever )there is specific lingo that I wasn't keen to before. The one that has literally become apart of me is TWA: Teeny Weeny Afro.
Tumblr media
Life post BC was frustrating and freeing. Frustrating because I had to relearn my hair. Unlearn everything that I learned from my mom since I was five. I had to teach myself how to listen to my hair and know that it will tell me exactly what it wants.
Freeing because once I cut my hair, I felt more like myself than I’ve ever felt. Even when my hair grew out, I felt the most beautiful when was my hair was in my shrunken afro. Most naturals (including me in the beginning) aspire to have the biggest Afro and following suit, artists or any companies that make designs with natural haired women always portray the woman with the biggest Afro. Since that is no longer my mission, I search high & low for images of women with TWAs. It isn’t the easiest task to do, and I find that even Instagram pages that are supposed to be dedicated to TWAs, slowly migrate into the posting the longest, biggest hair.
So you can understand my excitement when I went to the 2017 Naturalista Hair Show and found these earrings by Todd Parsons (aka earring guy) that showcased woman with a small afro walking her dog. Firstly, doesn’t that sound amazing! I have “Natural haired black Woman walking her dog” earrings. If you know me, you know that they were meant for me.
Tumblr media
Now I haven’t worn them until today because these aren’t earrings that you throw on last minute, these earrings are a statement. A moment. I thought that this moment wouldn’t be until summer because you know, winter. But I felt more compelled to show off my earrings and talk about my love for my TWA because The Friend Zone podcast has been talking about gender roles and Fran’s experience when she cut her hair. I have never loved myself more than after I cut my hair. As a black woman my hair is a big part of me, but it doesn’t define me or my beauty. February is black history and the month of Love. So here I am showing love to my TWA, Todd Parsons and my beauty.

Girlfriends.
Tribe. Vulnerability. Home. Fear. Girlfriends.
5 words that are so close to home for me. Tribe...I’ve been searching for mine. Vulnerability is need to find my true home without settling, but vulnerability triggers every bit of fear in me.
I am always in this constant state of confusion.Wanting to be transparent but feeling the need to be closed off. The struggle of feeling at peace when I’m alone, but know that I need to surround myself with people that bring me peace. “Finding your tribe” it is not a topic that is new.Every podcast that I listen to has an episode. Our favorite shows are based on groups of friends and how they navigate everything while their lives interlock. We, well, ME all want to find a place of belonging. I find myself envious of pure friendships that are full transparency, laughter, trust and love. I know I need to do; through this long isolation I have learned that I can not find my tribe if I can not master loving myself and accepting who I am.I can not attract light when I am full of darkness.Until then I would live vicariously through. My girlfriends.

UNARMED
There are many times I have walked into situations UNARMED. Left vulnerable without the knowledge to defend myself. I fought out of fear and intimidation. Frightened because of insecurity.Panicking. I wasn’t taught the times I was supposed to vulnerable, the times it was okay to let people to see me and then times that I people needed to earn it. Going through life without these skills have made my journey more difficult that it needed to be.. I've been working harder and not smarter my whole life. Believing that growth can only happen through pain. Not taking a moment to acknowledge my small growths that happened without me even realizing.  Now all I want to do is ARM myself with the skills to be better. I am  thankful for the clarity that I’ve gotten thus far and the FREEDOM that I will gain in the upcoming year.

Crime in Color: Stop Ignoring Us
In a world where the voices and stories of people of color are ignored, Keyerra is here to bring them to the forefront. Keyerra is the host of true crime podcast Crime in Color, a podcast that speaks about minorities in true crime. Every week she shares different cases, not just the basic facts of the case, but the stories of the victims and survivors. She makes it known that this podcast “is not commentary on black on black crime”, so don’t get the wrong idea, she isn't here for that. I was able to sit down with her and talk about the beginning of  Crime in Color, cases that hit close to home and even the criminal she would like to sit down and interrogate.
Melanated Genesis: Why did you feel the need to start Crime in Color?
Keyerra: It all started with a disagreement on Twitter with another podcaster about the representation of people of color in true crime. She didn’t understand why it was necessary for their stories to be told. People of color go unnoticed, they don't get as much attention as the pretty white girl that goes missing, which they should.
For example there was a Latina woman that went missing a few months before Lacie Peterson. She was kidnapped and murdered, however no one knows about her story.
MG: So the idea of Crime in Color came to mind, how long did it take for you to move forward with it?
Keyerra: A couple of months. I told myself that I needed to put it out by June 1st. I took the plunge, picked a topic and went for it. If I didn't do it by June 1st, I knew I wasn't going to do it.
MG: Why June 1st?
Keyerra: Just a date. 1st of the month. I needed to start, and once I started I had to be consistent. It’s a lot of work and a process. Researching topics and perfecting my format, but I think i’ve got it now.
MG: How do you report on topics that hit close to home? You did an angry rant on Kenneka Jenkins, what is that like for you?
Keyerra: It’s hard. I have to separate the story from myself. But I also feel like recognizing that this could happen to anyone gives me more reason to talk about it. However, the domestic violence episode was hard and it scared me. At that point, I have to breathe and know that it has been solved and if it hasn’t been solved it confirms that I need to put this story out there in hopes that if anyone knows anything they will take it to the police.
MG: What has the response been to the podcast?
Keyerra: It has been great. Everyone agrees CIC is something that was needed and didn't even realize it was missing. However, I would like to point out that I am not the only podcast that does this. There is another podcast that speaks about people of color in true crime called “It’s About Damn Crime”.
MG: Many podcasts consist of two or more people, how is it recording by yourself?
Keyerra: It’s weird. I find that I often have conversations with myself. I do have to stop and gather my thoughts, reread sentences and re-record. If someone else was there it would easier to have a natural banter. The benefit of being solo is that it allows me to keep episodes short and I like that. I would love to share the workload though.
MG: Do you want to have guests on the show?
Keyerra: I definitely want guests and if I had a guest and we had good chemistry I could see that person being a co-host. I think that would be a great way to find a co-host.
MG: How do find cases? If I were to look at your Google searches right now what would I find?
Keyerra: Right now you would find “Killer kids”,not just kids that kill for fun, but kids that killed their abusers and attackers in self-defense.  You would also find black male victims, missing persons, and unsolved mysteries. I normally go through Murderpedia or Wikipedia and search through different crimes by country to find something obscure if possible. But the more obscure, the less information and it is super hard to build an episode from that; That’s one of the struggles when trying to be  “different”.
MG: Murderpedia? That is crazy I’ve never heard of that.
Keyerra: I find many cases on there. I use wikipedia a lot which led me to the case about the lynching of Ed Johnson.
My google terms are probably going to get flagged because I Google at work and they probably think I’m crazy.
MG: So how do you sleep at night? Like I can only listen to your episodes during the day.
Keyerra: It’s nothing for me, I’ve been into this since middle school. The true crime doesn't affect me, its the police procedurals on shows like Criminal Minds and CSI with the fictional characters that keep me up at night.
MG: How do you introduce yourself at networking events?
Keyerra: A podcaster. I am true crime podcaster. That’s my side hustle. My day job is an accounting technician.
MG: That sounds like the storyline of a criminal. Accounting technician by day serial killer by night.
Keyerra: Kills people with my awesome stories.
MG: If you could sit down with one criminal who would it be?
Keyerra: Rodney Alcola, he was the guy that changed my life with true crime, after that  I became obsessed. He was the serial killer who was on the show “The Dating Game” and then won. No one knew he was was a serial killer. I would like to know just, why? Why them? Are they alive?
MG: What is your ultimate goal for Crime in Color?
Keyerra: It would be for one of the missing persons cases I’ve reported on to be solved and collab with other podcasts. However, having people like the podcast and hitting 43,000 listens is mindblowing. Not even sure how that’s possible, but I’m blessed and thankful.
MG: What does the future have in store for CIC?
Keyerra: Serial Killer series, bringing back “What’s up/What’s new in the news” segment. I want to continue creating my blog, but I am exploring different platforms that best fit what I’m trying to do. So that will be coming as soon as I can get that straightened out.
MG: Crime in Color talks about serious topics, but is it a creative outlet for you?
Keyerra: Yes. It causes me to work on writing and storytelling. Helps me write to captivate the listener. Teaches me how to arrange the story, whether to write chronologically or narratively and it has helped me become personable.
I want to thank Keyerra for sitting down with me and breaking down the reasons  Crime in Color is needed and why it is so important to her.
For all my True Crime lovers you can listen to Crime In Color on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher & Google Play

Seriously? No, Series-ly!!
I interviewed Brittany & Mary of Series-ly podcast almost a year ago and was excited the duo agreed to do an updated interview. Since I last talked to them they have had their one year anniversary, created a website web series submissions, hosted a panel at Urban Web Submit, and partnered with Black & Sexy TV. Brittany & Mary are two fans that have managed to create a community and introduce more people to black web series.
It has been almost a year since we’ve done our last interview, and I have been watching you two grow tremendously. You have been to web fests, met actors and creators of web series, created a website and celebrated your 1 year anniversary, 2017 was a great year for Series-ly. What can we expect in 2018?
Yes 2017 was absolutely amazing! We’re so grateful for how far we’ve come and are very excited for the future. This year we are expanding the Seriesly brand by curating screening events and creating Seriesly TV. Seriesly TV is our YouTube channel which will host video interviews, event coverage and much more. We also recently partnered with Black & Sexy TV, one of the leading digital networks out today! This was a huge deal for us since we have been fans of the network for so long.
How does it feel to be acknowledged by the people in the web series industry? Are Brittany & Mary synonymous with the web series yet?
It’s an awesome feeling! We definitely think people think of Seriesly Podcast when talking about web series, which was one of our very main goals when we started. We would have never thought we would receive such positive responses from creators and actors. We started off as fans and now we’re working with these shows and it feels so surreal. It’s so crazy that we have now become critics in a way.
Now that you grown so much, do you have more people reaching out to you to review their shows?
Yes, now more than ever! We love that people are interested in our opinions and want us to review their shows. We’ve gotten so many requests that we had to create an official submission form on our website serieslypodcast.com. We are extremely grateful for everyone who reaches out to us and wants to be a part of the Seriesly squad.
Series-ly is definitely more than a just a podcasts that recaps and reviews black web series, I believe that it is now becoming a community and you two are bringing people together.
Yassss! It’s crazy because we didn’t realize the community that we formed until our anniversary party last year! There were so many web series creators, actors and fans all under one roof having a good time and we were the ones that brought them together.  We also love when listeners tell us they watched a show because we put them on to it! It’s fun knowing we’re creating a web series community and bringing more awareness to these amazing series.
I was already obssesed with web series and Seriesly continues to enable me, but I’m not complaining. Keep up with Series-ly at SerieslyPodcast.com

A day at Milk & Honey Cafe
I have to thank the Twitter streets for introducing me to Milk & Honey Cafe, It is now one of my favorite brunch spots in Maryland.  Besides the delicious food, the cafe has great music and friendly staff, and of course Mimosas!
Milk & Honey was created by Chef Sammy Davis from Food Network's Chopped Redemption. It is a small cafe, but it's popularity is enormous. The praise that it has already is well deserved, and I don't think you guys understand how happy I am that it close to me. D.C & Baltimore are great, but sometimes I just want drive by real quick and pick up some good food. Especially since I can do take out too. Thank you Milk & Honey!!
Check out the video  “Day at Milk & Honey” to get the full experience
There are some House Rules that you need to know, but you go. I've listed them below, but they are on the website. I saw them, laughed, but I respected them and followed them.
The rules are verbatim :
1.We guarantee great food…not great service. (We try our hardest though, we really do!)
2.We do not provide individual checks; however, we will allow as many forms of payment on one check as you wish.
3.18% gratuity added to parties of 5 or more OR checks larger than $150.
4.NO modifications to the TOP TEN BRUNCH MENU signature items. (If you have a food allergy, please choose another item without the allergen.)
5.Be nice!
6.No reservations. Unless you’re Barack Obama. (Hey, there’s exceptions to every rule.)
7.Wait times are estimates, not prophecies.
8.No table hibernation. (Others gotta eat too.)
9.The wait dish is $4 – ask a staff member! (Nothing like food while you wait.
Down below is the vlog of my experience. I hope you enjoy!
CheWayne Symoane
Disclaimer:You will see at one point, we didn't know if it was black owned, I just saw the pictures of the food and wanted to go
10.No parties larger than 8 on days that end with Y. (We’re a small place, and when we get busy large groups are hard to accommodate.
11.We seat complete parties only.
12.are free to move around the cabin, please don’t block the aisles & exits. (Keep in mind, if on the wait list you can receive a text when table is ready. Naps in your car are fine!)

BlackTv: The Single Life Series
Watching The Single Life Series was nostalgic. I got flashbacks of UPN when there were shows about black women dating and maneuvering through life.Back then I didn’t completely understand what was going on with Joan, Lynn Mya and Toni, but now I can relate just a tiny bit.The Single Life  brings my flashbacks to the present revolving around 3 black women that are at different stages in their love life.
First, we have Raven who is single, but still gets that good “D” from her ex boyfriend, who makes it very clear that he only wants sex from her. We’ve all got that friend right?, the one who no matter how many times you say “leave him alone” she still goes back. Yeah, that’s Raven. She’s holding on to what they had and what they could have been. I found myself constantly saying “girl you deserve better, ‘Kick him to the curb’ (As Chante from Two Can Play that Game would say)”
Then there’s Angela the single one that is looking for love in all the wrong places. She wants love and  commitment, but it doesn't seem to happen.  At one point she believes that love doesn’t happen for her because she gives it up too easy. We’ve all that thought, at some point, if I didn’t give it up maybe he would still be around? (heads up that isn’t true). Throughout the show Angela’s vibe, was “I just want to get my sh*t together, I need to get my sh*t together.”
Lastly we have Tisha, she is the woman that has what her other two friends want, she’s in an interracial relationship with a man that can’t enough of her. However, her boyfriend is a little naive and can’t tell when his new “friend” is getting too close. She is a woman that is been hurt and admits to her insecurities, but she ain’t stupid.
Besides the three women, another  aspect I loved about this series was the men. Without giving too much away the men were a breath of fresh air. There are not many men that will defend black women the way these men do, and it is enlightening to know that there is a show that not only addresses the disrespect that black women face, but also portray men that will not allow it to happen.
Single Life Series is for women and written by a women. Each character is a depiction of a single woman’s love life that we have all been through or know someone that has been through. It is a girl’s night, drink wine kind of show. If you want know how all these women’s lives end up, if it is better or worse than your reality, check it out and they just dropped season 2!

BlackTv:Coming Home
I got a notification on Instagram from a web series titled “Coming Home”, the tagline  for the series was “What happens when your man is locked up?” Honestly, I would probably be single, I just don’t think I could be about that life,  but nonetheless I had to watch this series.
I needed to watch this primarily out of curiosity, but also because Papoose is now the standard for the ride or die significant other, so I needed to know if this woman met the standard.
Coming Home had me curious and captivated me from the beginning. On the surface it is about a woman named Mahogany who is trying to be a faithful girlfriend while her man is in jail despite what everyone is telling her to let him go. As I watched a few more episodes the more the character development intrigued me.
The main character Mahogany is a strong independent woman that is extremely faithful to her man Donovan while he is locked up. The true ride or die chick that runs out of parties to take phone calls, sends him letters, and ignores everyone's input about her relationship, even her best friend Zoe. As the show goes on Mahogany's character is more developed, you realize that she is not as naive as you think.
Zoe, the best friend, is literally Mahogany’s yin to her yang. The way they approach life is so different, and as she says “she not rude, she’s honest”. The too honest friend, that everyone needs to check them when you need to be put into your place. She is the badass that will do anything for her friend, but only wants the best for her. Envision the girl, that always looks mean, but smiles as soon as you talk to her (well smiles sometimes depending on the person), that’s Zoe.
We’ve got these two best friends, then there is plot twist with characters Ryan and Calvin. You ever watch a show and don't like certain characters right off the back? That’s Ryan and Calvin for me. Ryan as fine as he is, (and I mean yasss!! fine), something just isn’t right(no spoilers) Calvin just seems sneaky, but at the same time he could be a good guy. I digress, I just can’t have anyone messing with Mahogany and Zoe (just started watching the show and already getting protective). Something tells me that they need each other in their lives.
It is an up and coming series, so once you start it, you can’t help but wonder what comes next. There is much more to the story besides a woman waiting for her man to come home. It is about a different type of love, loyalty to friends and lovers, trusting your instinct.
I promise this is not a show that will leave you disappointed. The best part is that it is just starting and there is so much more to come! Oh and I’ve come to the conclusion that no one can live up to the Papoose standard.

Melanated Genesis by CheWayne Symoane
What is Melanated Genesis? It is a space I am creating to inform everyone about black businesses.Supporting black businesses is something that I am passionate about. If there is a product I like I always research and see if there is a black owned alternative. Not everyone is like me and likes to search the web in order to find black business so I had a  thought, “CheWayne why don't you do all the hard work and give the people everything they need to flourish?” and here we are.
I want black businesses, black web series, etc to get their shine. That’s all I’m here for. To share the products that I have tried, the web series that I have watched and other services that I have discovered. Here you will not just get links, you will get pictures, blogs, and interviews to get information about these businesses.
So welcome to Melanated Genesis!
I welcome suggestions, questions and all love.
Enjoy me embracing my Melanated Magic !
