It’s officially the summer of fashion-forward merch. Kanye West’s merch pop-ups in New York City and Los Angeles proved so popular that he took the concept to Paris last week; Justin Bieber caused a stampede at the VFiles store in Soho when he launched his in May. The latest musican to get in on the act? Zayn Malik whose debut album Mind of Mine prompted the eclectic new collection. “Everything was created with the idea that this is something I would want to wear,” said the 23-year-old British pop star. “I wanted to approach this as an opportunity to extend my ideas as an artist, and to give fans another facet of who I am.”

The resulting 23-piece offering is available starting today on Zaynmalikstore.com and consists of everything from tees printed with Malik’s face to hoodies scrawled with Urdu script—a nod to the singer’s South Asian roots—with prices starting at $30. “My family is from Pakistan, so having artwork in Urdu has huge significance to me,” said Malik, of the shirts that read “Zayn” and “Mind” in the Hindustani language. The highly graphic pieces also take inspiration from metal band tees of the late ’70s and early ’80s, an aesthetic that has been getting traction with fans outside of the rock scene for the past few seasons; cool guy brands such as Fear of God have certainly borrowed heavily from the aesthetic, for example. As it happens Malik enlisted Mark Wilkinson, the illustrator of Iron Maiden fame, for this project. “Working with Mark gave me a license to do something exciting conceptually with a lot of color and detail,” said Malik, referencing his favorite shirt, an apocalyptic piece dubbed the “Z-Day” which depicts the singer emerging out of a city engulfed in flames. “The art we created gives a nod to the vintage rock-band T-shirts but with my own concept.” No doubt his take on merch will be a hit with music heads, fashion fans, and, perhaps even style-savvy supermodels, too.
