Will has been acting strange lately. He’s moody and secretive one minute and floating on air the next. He’s making secret phone calls, sneaking out of the house. One day, he even asks Hopper for dating advice.

It’s very strange.

Oh, and the other thing. He just won’t stop talking about Mike Wheeler.

It takes Hopper an embarrassingly long amount of time to figure out why.

It takes him an embarrassingly long time to realize what was going on.

Looking back, it was pretty obvious. But he never really caught on. Maybe because he wasn’t used to it, had never really been around that sort of thing. Maybe it was because he just didn’t know Will that well yet.

Maybe it was because he already didn’t like Mike Wheeler and he tried his very best not to think about him.

Either way - it remained. It took him a long time to catch on. He didn’t think he would ever live it down.

He remembered the beginning - right before everything had tipped over the edge and descended into chaos. Joyce was perched in his office chair, a nervous wreck. Frantically offering up any information about her son that she thought might help.

He could tell how much she loved him from the way she talked about him. Heard the sharp edge in her voice when she spat out the boy’s father used to call him a queer.

He’d responded wrong (he almost always did). And she’d snapped back, instantly.

“He’s missing is what he is!”

But she hadn’t said no. Looking back, he realized. She hadn’t said no.
