Italians suffered the worst prejudice when they came to America legally. They were paid lower than black folks. Everyone spat at them and called them names. There were thousands of orphans on the street and in the sewer. Their parents were dead from disease and poor medical care, hunger and unsanitary conditions. Marginalized they were. My dad said, “ but we had balls, worked like dogs and moved on up because of this ethic.”
