man im watching clips of y8 with the eng dub and its uh. i mean, kasuga and chitose sound alright? robbie daymond makes a decent zhao too (and can sing, damn), but the rest...............
#rambles#yakuza liveblogging#i think some VAs were straight up miscast#like kiryu and adachi sound WAY too young#and them + nanba + yamai all sound like theyre going for a voice thats way lower than their normal range#so it sounds very forced/unnatural- they shouldve just cast people with deeper voices if thats what they wanted#but others seem like a case of poor direction#like tomi sounds too...... peppy? i guess?#his character is very reserved/introverted so in jp he speaks with a pretty flat/monotonous affect most of the time#but in the dub he talks like a pretty normal somewhat outgoing dude so you lose that dimension of his character#same with joongi and seonhee- in jp they speak with a particular precision/sophistication#theyre leaders of a huge organization and as such are very careful with their words and you can hear that in their tone#but that element is completely missing from the eng dub#how kiryu's eng voice has been handled in particular is baffling- i know they recast him after 7 with some youtuber#which like. not knocking youtubers as a whole but the dude simply does not fit the part#and i looked up the VA they'd used for kiryu previously and he's fine? like nobody can ever be takaya kuroda but the old VA fit way better#plus hes like. actually close to kiryu's age (58) vs the new guy who's 32. and of course VAs can play characters of a variety of ages#but when the main problem with the new voice is that he sounds too young and you had a guy who sounds better and is the right age....#why recast him??? i dont get it. even if the old VA was no longer an option for some reason *surely* there was a better fit out there

the scene in yakuza 5 where shinada and milky dance on the roof talking about how they should run away and start over in a new town with new jobs and new lives, only for milky to abruptly stop and let shinada go when she gets called back downstairs to work, while shinada is sent stumbling by suddenly being let go until he too comes to a stop, burns a hole in my brain

MAN. that shit hits home#milky saying 'i wanna be a teacher this time- that was my dream as a kid!'#and shinada replying 'you can! nothings stopping you! you can start over!' with a tone that borders on hysterical#he's so desperate to believe it's possible because in that moment he can see it- he sees his way out#for a moment he's blind to all the things that have kept him from doing exactly what he's proposing every other time he's considered it#hes trapped in a glass house- he can see freedom but knows he cant reach it. but for a moment he lets himself forget the glass is there#but milky doesnt. she thinks hes being cute and plays along but as soon as she lets him go the music cuts and the moment is gone.#reality comes crashing back down- they're not going anywhere.#and i mean. idk if this is a common/universal experience but ive had many a late night where ive done exactly the same thing#fantasized about quitting my job/going back to school/finding some means of self employment/moving somewhere totally new#and ive had those fleeting moments where i could see it- i could see how i could make it work#or i could see that there's nothing *physically* stopping me from doing any of those things#and if i could just sum up enough courage i could do anything i wanted with my life#but then i wake up the next day and that vision is gone.#i cant see outside the glass house anymore- i can only see the reflection of the inside.#tl;dr i should revisit y5- the writers were cooking and i didnt take enough time to savor it#(esp not the shinada section bc i hated his combat style lol)

genuinely cant believe y0-y6 are on sale on steam for $40 as a bundle and that they do this sale regularly, like holy shit, what an insane deal

yknow going through the whole yakuza/LAD series as quickly as i did made it really interesting to see how the series as a whole and some characters in specific evolved over time in response to changing audience interests, specifically a growing desire for pathos in their video games
if you'd told someone who'd just played 1 & 2 on the ps2 back in 2006 that by 2024, several of the most recent entries in the series would end with the protagonist having an absolute sobbing meltdown and/or begging the main antagonist to give up in lieu of just punching them into complete submission, there's a 0% chance they would've believed you
#rambles#yakuza#like a dragon#yakuza liveblogging#like it was fine for majima to just be a ~crazy guy~ in 2006 but by 0's release in 2016 that wasnt enough anymore#so he gets a tragic backstory with a love interest#nishiki gets fleshed out a ton in 0/kiwami 1 for the same reason#kiryu is sad about yumi's death in 1 but not so sad it stops him from starting a fling with sayama in 2#but later games retroactively cast yumi as the one and only love of kiryu's life#and her death as probably the singular most traumatic event he's ever experienced#(though her/nishiki's/kazama's deaths all kind of get lumped together since they happened in such quick succession)#6 is the misadventures of grandpa kiryu bc dad kiryu is a much more compelling character vs. plain ol 'dude who punch real good' kiryu#hell kasuga in his entirety would not have worked in this series in the 00s except as a joke/side character#a dude who relentlessly believes in the inherent good of mankind and their ability to start over and change their ways no matter what?#in *yakuza*? nah take that shit back to kingdom hearts#anyway. its good! probably a necessary evolution for the series to stay relevant but good nonetheless#'dude who punch real good and cries sometimes' >>>>> 'dude who punch real good'

me @ all 4 of the fellas tearing their shirts off and teaming up in the finale
i had a brief moment of terror during the cutscene where daigo's like "kiryu!!!!!" and kiryu just straight up doesn't look at him and hits him with the "idk who that is"- i was so afraid the fellas were gonna leave and that was gonna be that but the writers came through for me, thank god
very much enjoyed the little chat we got after that- majima being like "lets go get drinks with kiryu-chan", kiryu giving him the "not my name" line, so majima says "...... okay whatever lol lets go get drinks with mr bodyguard", daigo trying to stop shishido from riling the omi dudes up and kiryu being like "nah let him. we'll take em anyway" and daigo pouting about it, "well now i look like a pansy-ass bitch >:(", very good
holy moly shishido had a shitton of health bars though, went through the whole damn rainbow like 3 times. still, it was nice to have a final boss who had like...... actually been meaningfully present in the story before the last act, this series has a habit of pulling final bosses out of its ass so im glad that didnt happen here
anyway, jesus fucking christ that last scene before the credits. i mean good lord. that man was UGLY crying. rgg studios reaching new heights of crying tech, snot and all. and his reaction to haruto's drawing........ that shit got me bad. the whole scene was fucked up but that was particularly mean.
if we dont get an onscreen kiryu & haruto reunion in y9 im gonna fucking lose it

one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
#god i hate this shit so much#theyll even let you get your hopes up that you can do shit online/via email/via chat#only to ultimately tell you 'sorry we actually cant do this here- when can we give you a call?'#eat my whole ass!!! what the fuck do you think i can do via a phone call that i cant do via written communication??#obviously the answer is that companies have invested heavily in phone-based support systems for decades#and theyd rather use what they already have instead of investing in text-based support#aside from slapping an AI chatbot on their support page that can field the most basic of questions#but man. it drives me crazy
