Why did Poseidon in myths had so many children? Does ancient Greek like for their royalty to be the descendants from him? Or is it because a relation with Poseidon is a symbolism for the city or the royalty sea power?
I was wondering if there's a lot of thought going into the mythical creation of their city and their kings origin especially when they have divine relations. I thought since Zeus is the King of the Gods, being a descendant from him was a more preferable option, he is the Father of men and Gods after all.
Oh that reminds me of a very old answer of mine you can find here:
in which I basically enlist some of the epithets belonging to gods and goddesses of the pantheon. As you see there are many epithets that associate Poseidon with royalty and protection of the houses and households etc
However we need to note that regardless of the source of the children (aka regardless of which deity is the parent) the meaning behind it is the same; that the heroes come from gods and that the gods provide for the world good things such as protectors and defenders. Poseidon is no exception. On the contrary. Poseidon is one of the Big Three that represents the earth aka our physical world as opposed to Zeus who represents the heavens and Hades who represents the underworld. His association with inheritance, children etc that are linked to the physical world is an essential part of his attributes.
Not to mention that the sea is also a fertile place or the land for that matter because as I said Poseidon is the god-protector/pillar of the earth. Since earthquakes shape the anaglyph of the earth and gives people the places they live and thrive and of course we can speak on how royal power also spreads with the sea and sea voyages for sure.
And of course one can say that Zeus being the father of a hero might be seen as more preferrable for the reasons you said but it also melts down to local traditions as well and local cults of the gods. One god being specifically worshipped in one place might as well have more mythical descendants to that said place if that makes any sense ^_^

It occurs to me the the ocean is only cruel if you don’t belong there, are not claimed by and have claim to it. And I think that explains a lot about Percy and Poseidon’s relationship

After some time I wanted to bring you the design of my Amphitrite! The wife of Poseidon
In Amphitrite I took some inspiration, for example, her hair inspired me in a waterfall and in itself the shape of the body, face, and other aspects I wanted to take as a support of a mermaid, the golden touches with the turquoises

I know that Poseidon is the main "villain" in Epic (or main antagonist at the very least), but with the way the world is looking right now - ESPECIALLY towards women... maybe his ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves motto should taken into consideration.

Another family dinner
Poseidon: Hades: Poseidon: Our sons... Hades: Yes, brother. Our sons. Poseidon: Hades: Poseidon: If he feeds Percy any pomegranate seeds-- Hades: What are you accusing my son of? Poseidon: Just hoping the apple falls far from the tree. Hades: What nonsense. If anything, I should warn you. I'm very fond of my nephew, but I won't yield my wrath if he hurts my son. Poseidon: Like how yours kidnap him? Hades: Don't get me started! Hades and Poseidon argue Nico: Percy: Nico: Family dinner was a bad idea Percy: At least it's not Uncle Lightning Bolt and Dad this time. Nico: true

Finally finished all the designs for the Olympians in my Hades game based D&D campaign :D
(A lot of them are inspired by the Hades and Epic designs, mostly Neal Illustrator’s because I’m a really big fan, so if there are similarities then that’s why!)
