Wanted to share my take on what post-explosion Nishiki would be like. Putting some thoughts under the cut.
Despite everything, there’s not enough evidence linking him directly to any of his crimes. A lot of it gets pinned onto his men who did most of the dirty work and/or clean-up. So much to his dismay, his prison sentence is relatively short. After his release, he doesn’t actually disband his family, but instead basically abandons them, leaving them to run themselves.
I think Nishiki would be deeply self conscious about his scarring and do his best to obscure it so he looks as close to ‘normal’ as possible. He grows his hair back out after leaving prison, and uses it to keep that side of his face covered, and maybe go as far as using makeup to bring his skin closer to its normal colour. With his clothes, he’d opt for items he can ‘hide’ in, with layers and scarves and anything with a high neckline. His usual black and white would be too flashy for him to be comfortable wearing, and so he’d introduce some colour back into his wardrobe - rusty dark reds, browns and oranges somewhat reminiscent of that maroon suit from 0, but far less showy.
His self-consciousness would also extend to his behaviour. At first, he can barely bring himself to leave the house, or to look at himself in the mirror. When he does go outside, he’s be hyperaware of how he’s positioning himself so that people don’t see his ‘bad’ side.
Perhaps he eventually reconnects with Kiryu and that’s what finally gets him out of his shell.. Or not. I'm not sure he would accept any attempt Kiryu made to re-establish a close friendship, but would be happy to offer him cynical pieces of advice whenever he runs into trouble. Somehow it seems more fitting to have him exist as a cautionary tale for the remainder of the Kiryu saga - he survives, but nothing he can do will erase any of the damage he caused, and he has to live with that.
I dunno. But man, he could have been such an interesting character to keep around.
