Richard says when talking about life in California that he has a Puritan streak.
Maybe he wants Bunny gone because that is who he knows he could easily become. Perhaps he makes so much of Bunny not being gay at their first lunch (despite Bunny saying gay people care too much about food and then proceeding to have many of his key moments as a character, such as stealing the pie or eating the ice cream and letting it melt, center around food, not to mention that very lunch.) This also aligns with Richard's denial of his own feelings regarding Francis.
