 Gaara readies a plate with some seasoned rice and sliced dates. They still have some leftover post-workout slop in the fridge - courtesy of Lee - but Metal needs a gentler touch now. He sits down beside his son and nudges the plate next to the milk.

 “I’m always afraid. So is your father.” He does not pretend to understand Metal’s own fears, or the way they sometimes leave him a trembling, panicked mess, or other times near catatonic, his skin clammy and paler than chalkrock. Gaara of the Desert has seen enough terror to understood its roots, though. “You’re afraid of doing wrong. Of not being enough. Is that right?”

          he looks a little surprised as his father’s first utterance, hand holding his chopsticks pausing a moment. fear is common, even metal at his age can understand it’s an emotion you can’t very well prevent. but it can be ignored, overcome, other variants. but father was always afraid? how did he do anything? 

           eyes glance back down at the snack prepared for him, poking at it moreso than eating it. it’s not often he just spells out his anxieties like rattling off a grocery list. but gaara has instilled in him the value of honesty, however hard it may be to give sometimes. he nods.

            “...yes. i am afraid of failing, and being laughed at. i am afraid of disgracing papa’s and grandpa-sensei’s legacy. of disgracing your legacy with failure.”

          from what i understand metal only opened multiple gates when he was possessed by nue, and it’s implied lee wouldn’t teach his son the art of the gates until he overcame his anxieties. he opened the first gate ‘on accident’ while fighting his dad to preform the trademark konoha senpuu. 

          but honestly if metal can open up to three gates even under a  possession, he has the capability. he may very well be more skilled with the gates than his dad, as both times he’s used them, he’s done it without thought. he just did it.

she notes his fidgeting, the way he seemed nervous to raise the subject with her. but she remains patient, a quality reserved for moments like these— she knew he had his own battles, struggles. to know he wanted her help in particular, with such an important part of his training, who was she to turn him down?

          “ you want me to train with you ? ” she confirms with him, hand resting on her hip. despite the flurry of words, she gets the gist of it. “ i don’t mind — ” a nod, a small smile. “ do you need me as a sparring partner ? ”

          “yes, please!” his tone is a little louder than he means for it to be, but it’s hard to control his volume when he feels like his stomach is going to come out of his throat. sarada isn’t super intimidating, but she is certainly strong and capable and he’s seen her punches. they’re not unlike his own kicks. 

          he expects a no, you’re a loser so when she agrees it takes metal a moment to register. not like sarada was particularly cruel, it’s just metal’s default thought process. you can see his surprise melt into happiness as he understands, “yosh! that...that would be very helpful to me, i think! if...only, of course, you would take me on as a partner....”

          metal makes a contract with ningame and the ninja tortoises after he graduates but he never usually summons them in battle he just summons ningame to talk to sometimes. he’s a good listener.

          Gai’s instinct was to wrap Metal in his arms and coddle the boy until his tears of sadness turned into hot-blodded tears of joy – but he couldn’t act on such a gentle instinct. No, Metal facing such adversity was a perfect moment for Gai to teach Metal the lessons that Dai had once taught him.

          Instead of hugging him close, Gai placed both hands on each of Metal’s shoulders and held him so that he was sitting upright on Gai’s lap. “Your youth has just begun, Metal-kun! And what is it that you’re doing here? Turning your back on youth!?” Gai had to fight to keep his own tears from falling. Being able to share his father’s words with his precious pupil’s son was a moment of overwhelming pride that he’d been anticipating since Metal’s birth.

          “You must acknowledge your shortcomings, Metal-kun. You should be grateful to those who show their support by pointing them out to you. Knowing your shortcomings will highlight your strengths! Not only that – but shortcomings can become strengths! Being afraid doesn’t make you a coward! Having fear speaks to how perceptive you are of things that threaten you. Once you acknowledge your fears, then you can be brave! A shinobi who has no fears is not brave, but only ignorant of the dangers of the world they live in!”
