tinù was born the only child of upper-middle class italian-americans. throughout school, she was very popular though a little detatched. she was frequently, and secretly, troubled by her worsening mental state. she focused her disstress on tormenting the school's resident weird kid, ryland chanowski, in typical bully fashion. when a cryptid dog-creature began its rounds in their small town, the community was in chaos. the canine killed animals and destroyed property: no-one knew what—or who—was next. when an unserious and poorly executed prank drastically changed ry's life, tinù was tried for reckless endangerment and aquitted. and so it was that—kto inny przychodzi, jeśli nie ty?—the two of them were alone, and all they had connecting them was each other. now, they hunt those things all the way down the east coast and work closely with the local police department, investigating ghosts, cryptids, and all kinds of creepies. 　　　 ☆ .

ry left their small town in poland when they were 12, and sought community in a local polish church. they resided for some 6 years with pani szmytka, an older woman and something of a mother figure. ry never cared very much about their unsavoury reputation or tinù's relentless teasing. they quietly and invisibly attempted on their life when they were 15, more out of displacement and gender dysphoria than anything else. what they really wanted, senior year of high school, was to see that goddamn dog... and see it she did, in the end. after it inevitably attacked her, irreparibly damaging nerves and injuring her spinal cord, she realized that the chase was actually kind of fun. now, ry and tinù are anywhere they can be, studying—and taking out—those rancid and otherworldly creatures. as it is, the two take care of each other. neither of them want to talk about the past. ry learned that forgiveness is pretty easy when you don't give much of a shit about anything. in the end, all tinù and ry have is each other. 　　　 ☆ .

a boisterous young woman working as a spy, theif, and a bartender in urban ~1910s. she is agile and clever, equal parts asset and liability. she is sentimental, kind, and gentle, and she's a sucker for a pretty woman.

　　　 ii. regina tolstonog. the noveau-riche daughter of a point-man to a local nyc bootlegger, circa 1920s. regina is smart, cynical, and bound by a level of decorum she holds herself too. she is artistically inclined and contemplative. it takes a lot to get to know her.

florence was born in cill rois (kilrush), a small port on the west coast of ireland, to her mother and father. her mother passed during her teenage years, and a new girl arrived in town from belfast with her family. joan was the love of florence's life. they built a romance in the hollows of town: the shadows of the rocky shore and the dusty basement of the church... they planned to catch a ship to london late one night, but when joan got held up florence arrived in the city first. joan never did arrive, and was later confirmed dead. now, florence does whatever she can. at times bartending, others spying for one local gang or another, and always stealing--she lives fast and free and with very little abandon. she has allies in gangsters and theives, but is usually alone. 　　　 ☆ .

juliana—she has renamed herself 'nova'—was born three years after her older sister, lisa. she lives in the suburbs of new jersey with her family and her guinea pig, dulce. in mid-april, she miraculously survived a messy svicide attempt which altered sensation and mobility in her hands. her and lisa, and lisa's boyfriend jackson, often go to new york city by train to attend raves. otherwise, nova likes watching lisa play basketball, writing in her notebooks, watching movies, and collecting stuffed animals. she will probably take her own life before she is twenty-one. 　　　 ☆ .

paislie was raised by her aunt, marisol, in the tri-state area. while marisol is somewhat traditional, paislie has often conflicted with her aunt, and has a medicore relationship with her parents. as a child, she went to catholic grade school and attended sabrina's boarding school when she was kicked out, where she still lives with raven. she has an enemy, ex-roommate catalina, and an online friendship with vienna. she runs a popular blog where she posts photos and videos of her life. she is good at drawing and playing baseball, and enjoys looking through cemetaries. 　　　 ☆ .

ember grew up very close with her cousin, faolan (fay). she had a stable family life through her parents and aunt and uncle. the september she was 16, fay's best friend gemma died under mysterious circumstances in the woods of new jersey, leaving ember as the only witness. at the same time she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and labeled and unreliable witness: the death was eventually ruled a suicide. fay has never quite forgiven ember for not knowing the truth. soon thereafter, ember's parents divorced; and she moved with her mother and fay's family to a small town in southern california. there, she briefly spent time in a nearby mental hospital where she met vienna. she lives with her mother and several pets. 　　　 ☆ .

murphy is from boston, ma., where he grew up with his sister, megumi, and his parents. his childhood was marked by his inability to connect with those around him, deep self-loathing, conflict with his mother, and a strong relationship with his father. in his early twenties he disappeared off to anywhere intermittently, having become addicted to cocaine at 16. at 23 he developed a relationship with azya as well as very close friendships with dante and chau. he lost contact with them some time later after moving to new jersey with his family. his father commited suicide using murphy's supply of heroin, for which his mother blamed him. murphy now lives with megumi, working at a local liquor store. he has reconnected with azya and dante, and has made friends with alkmini. 　　　 ☆ .

mari was raised outside of vegas until their early teens, when they left their home and their father for the open road. they made few friends and fewer enemies on their travels, reflecting on their own identity, or lack thereof. they traveled east towards new york city, where they met an older girl named anita. they became close friends, caring for each other and running drugs in manhattan for a local dealer. while running from the police, the girl was struck by a car and killed, leaving mari both alone and exposed. eventually they met addie williams (sister of sabrina), a professor and historian. mari currently lives with her and her husband juro. 　　　 ☆ .

through her childhood, raven resided in brooklyn, ny, with her mother & brother. when a fire in their hotel killed several people including her mother, at 14 raven flitted for a while between places. eventually she ended up at a boarding school when she was 15 run by sabrina williams, where she met paislie and mari. she's uncannily connected with the spiritual plane, with a talent for seeing the dead that she cannot hone to her own desire. at 19 she survived a svicide attempt which temporarily severely altered her vision. ridden with anxieties, depression, and various trauma responses (including a troubling stammer), raven is naturally at least a little unpleasant. still, she's loyal and exciting and a good friend to keep. she is a writer. 　　　 ☆ .

　　　 iii. ember park. kind and mild-mannered, ember caught is between her desire to fit in and her strong moral compass. while socially anxious, she is passionate about hobbies, animals, and art. easily conflicted, she can come off as rude or judgemental, but she means well.
