the sun will rise again (part 1)
Shoyo was five years old - just barely - when there was a solar eclipse.
He didn't see it. It was on the other side of the world.
But his mother explained it to him as they sat on the couch, bringing up pictures of the sun on her phone. He didn't understand much. He was more focused on the way her fingers stroked his hair in just the right way, and the sound of her soft voice as she answered his sleepy questions.
"Dark day sounds scary," he mumbled.
"Well, the sun isn't gone forever," his mother replied, "Actually, the sun isn't gone at all. We just can't see it. Look." She stopped the rhythm of her hand to show him the screen, but he didn't look, just whined softly until she resumed the gentle stroking with a laugh.
"The next day," his mother promised, her voie fading away as sleep took over, "the sun will rise again."
Shoyo was seven years old when his father died.
He didn't remember the funeral, if there was one. But he did remember the sound of his - their - mother’s sobs, drowned out by Natsu’s screaming. The dark circles that settled like bruises under her eyes. The look of pure relief when he crawled under the couch to find Natsu’s missing pacifier. He remembered standing on his tippy-toes as cold water ran over his hands, scrubbing the dishes so their mother wouldn't have to.
He remembered truly feeling the presense of their father only when he was gone, from the heavy weight of his absense.
"Nii-chan," Natsu implored, wobbling to him on her toddler legs. She stretched her arms up towards him. "Play hide-and-seek!"
Shoyo hesitated. He had homework to do. And a test, tomorrow. He was already behind, because he'd been too engrossed in an ant he'd carried into the classroom to focus on the teacher.
...But their mother was still at work. She was taking the night shift, she'd said, meaning she was coming home very, very late and it was very, very important that Shoyo, as the big brother, took care of Natsu.
Natsu flapped her arms, demanding.
Shoyo set his homework down, and smiled brightly at his sister. "Okay! You hide first."
Natsu shrieked in delight, small feet padding away. She always hid in the closet in their mother's room, and he always made a show of searching in all the wrong places until she broke down into giggles and called him baka for never being able to find her. He didn't know how long this repetitive game would amuse her, but he did know that as long as Natsu kept hiding in the closet, she'd stay away from anywhere dangerous.
"No peeking!" Natsu called.
Shoyo turned to a wall, dramatically covering his eyes, and began loudly counting backwards from ten.
Their mother came home crying. He ran up to her, alarmed, but she only wrapped him up in a tight hug, and that's when he noticed the wide smile stretching across her face.
"Okaa-san?"
Natsu appeared from around the corner, rubbing her eyes and blinking sleepily, having woken up from her nap.
Their mother swept her into the hug as well, and pressed her nose into their hair, and cried and laughed.
"Okaa-san?" Shoyo pressed, pushing himself away. He wasn't a baby anymore.
Their mother smiled. He hadn't seen that smile for a while, wide and radient, and he realized he'd missed it. "I got a promotion," she announced, proud. "You know what this means?"
Natsu shook her head, and yawned.
"I won't be coming home late anymore," their mother promised brushing the hair from her face.
Shoyo was eleven years old when he biked past the electronics mart he biked past every day, saw the program running on the television, and stopped.
On the screen, the Little Giant soared.
